A
psalm of David. When he fled from his son Absalom.
1
O
LORD, how many are my foes!
How
many rise up against me!
2
Many
are saying of me,
"God
will not deliver him."
Selah
A
3
But
you are a shield around me, O LORD;
you
bestow glory on me and lift B
up my head.
4
To
the LORD I cry aloud,
and
he answers me from his holy hill.
Selah
5
I
lie down and sleep;
I
wake again, because the LORD sustains me.
6
I
will not fear the tens of thousands
drawn
up against me on every side.
7
Arise,
O LORD!
Deliver
me, O my God!
Strike
all my enemies on the jaw;
break
the teeth of the wicked.
8
From
the LORD comes deliverance.
PSALMS:
33
1
Sing
joyfully to the LORD, you righteous;
it
is fitting for the upright to praise him.
2
Praise
the LORD with the harp;
make
music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
3
Sing
to him a new song;
play
skillfully, and shout for joy.
4
For
the word of the LORD is right and true;
he
is faithful in all he does.
5
The
LORD loves righteousness and justice;
the
earth is full of his unfailing love.
6
By
the word of the LORD were the heavens made,
their
starry host by the breath of his mouth.
7
He
gathers the waters of the sea into jars A;
he
puts the deep into storehouses.
8
Let
all the earth fear the LORD;
let
all the people of the world revere him.
9
For
he spoke, and it came to be;
he
commanded, and it stood firm.
10
The
LORD foils the plans of the nations;
he
thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
11
But
the plans of the LORD stand firm forever,
the
purposes of his heart through all generations.
12
Blessed
is the nation whose God is the LORD,
the
people he chose for his inheritance.
13
From
heaven the LORD looks down
and
sees all mankind;
14
from
his dwelling place he watches
all
who live on earth--
15
he
who forms the hearts of all,
who
considers everything they do.
16
No
king is saved by the size of his army;
no
warrior escapes by his great strength. 2
17
A
horse is a vain hope for deliverance;
despite
all its great strength it cannot save.
18
But
the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him,
on
those whose hope is in his unfailing love,
19
to
deliver them from death
and
keep them alive in famine.
20
We
wait in hope for the LORD;
he
is our help and our shield.
21
In
him our hearts rejoice,
for
we trust in his holy name.
22
May
your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD,
even
as we put our hope in you. 3
PSALMS:
63
A
psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.
1
O
God, you are my God,
earnestly
I seek you;
my
soul thirsts for you,
my
body longs for you,
in
a dry and weary land
where
there is no water.
2
I
have seen you in the sanctuary
and
beheld your power and your glory.
3
Because
your love is better than life,
my
lips will glorify you.
4
I
will praise you as long as I live,
and
in your name I will lift up my hands.
5
My
soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with
singing lips my mouth will praise you.
6
On
my bed I remember you;
I
think of you through the watches of the night.
7
Because
you are my help,
I
sing in the shadow of your wings.
8
My
soul clings to you;
your
right hand upholds me.
9
They
who seek my life will be destroyed;
they
will go down to the depths of the earth.
10
They
will be given over to the sword
and
become food for jackals.4
11
But
the king will rejoice in God;
all
who swear by God's name will praise him,
while
the mouths of liars will be silenced. 5
PSALMS:
93
1
The
LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty;
the
LORD is robed in majesty
and
is armed with strength.
The
world is firmly established;
it
cannot be moved.
2
Your
throne was established long ago;
you
are from all eternity.
3
The
seas have lifted up, O LORD,
the
seas have lifted up their voice;
the
seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
4
Mightier
than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier
than the breakers of the sea--
the
LORD on high is mighty.
5
Your
statutes stand firm;
holiness
adorns your house
for
endless days, O LORD. 6
PSALMS:
123
A
song of ascents.
1
I
lift up my eyes to you,
to
you whose throne is in heaven.
2
As
the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
as
the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress,
so
our eyes look to the LORD our God,
till
he shows us his mercy.
3
Have
mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy on us,
for
we have endured much contempt.
4
We
have endured much ridicule from the proud,
much
contempt from the arrogant. 7
PROVERBS:
3
3
1
My son, do not forget my teaching,
but
keep my commands in your heart,
2
for
they will prolong your life many years
and
bring you prosperity.
3
Let
love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind
them around your neck,
write
them on the tablet of your heart.
4
Then
you will win favor and a good name
in
the sight of God and man.
5
Trust
in the LORD with all your heart
and
lean not on your own understanding;
6
in
all your ways acknowledge him,
and
he will make your paths straight. A
7
Do
not be wise in your own eyes;
fear
the LORD and shun evil.
8
This
will bring health to your body
and
nourishment to your bones.
9
Honor
the LORD with your wealth,
with
the firstfruits of all your crops;
10
then
your barns will be filled to overflowing,
and
your vats will brim over with new wine.
11
My
son, do not despise the LORD's discipline
and
do not resent his rebuke,
12
because
the LORD disciplines those he loves,
13
Blessed
is the man who finds wisdom,
the
man who gains understanding,
14
for
she is more profitable than silver
and
yields better returns than gold.
15
She
is more precious than rubies;
nothing
you desire can compare with her.
16
Long
life is in her right hand;
in
her left hand are riches and honor.
17
Her
ways are pleasant ways,
and
all her paths are peace.
18
She
is a tree of life to those who embrace her;
those
who lay hold of her will be blessed.
19
By
wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations,
by
understanding he set the heavens in place;
20
by
his knowledge the deeps were divided,
and
the clouds let drop the dew.
21
My
son, preserve sound judgment and discernment,
do
not let them out of your sight;
22
they
will be life for you,
an
ornament to grace your neck.
23
Then
you will go on your way in safety,
and
your foot will not stumble;
24
when
you lie down, you will not be afraid;
when
you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
25
Have
no fear of sudden disaster
or
of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
26
for
the LORD will be your confidence
and
will keep your foot from being snared.
27
Do
not withhold good from those who deserve it,
when
it is in your power to act. 9
28
Do
not say to your neighbor,
"Come
back later; I'll give it tomorrow"--
when
you now have it with you.
29
Do
not plot harm against your neighbor,
who
lives trustfully near you.
30
Do
not accuse a man for no reason--
when
he has done you no harm.
31Do
not envy a violent man
or
choose any of his ways,
32
for
the LORD detests a perverse man
but
takes the upright into his confidence.
33
The
LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked,
but
he blesses the home of the righteous.
34
He
mocks proud mockers
but
gives grace to the humble.
35
The
wise inherit honor,
but
fools he holds up to shame.
OLD
TESTAMENT:
2 CHRONICLES 8:1 - 10:19
8
1
At
the end of twenty years, during which Solomon built the temple of the
LORD and his own palace, 2
Solomon
rebuilt the villages that Hiram A
had given him, and settled Israelites in them. 3
Solomon
then went to Hamath Zobah and captured it. 4
He
also built up Tadmor in the desert and all the store cities he had
built in Hamath. 5
He
rebuilt Upper Beth Horon and Lower Beth Horon as fortified cities,
with walls and with gates and bars, 6
as
well as Baalath and all his store cities, and all the cities for his
chariots and for his horses B--whatever
he desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon and throughout all the
territory he ruled.
7
All
the people left from the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and
Jebusites (these peoples were not Israelites), 8
that
is, their descendants remaining in the land, whom the Israelites had
not destroyed--these Solomon conscripted for his slave labor force,
as it is to this day. 9
But
Solomon did not make slaves of the Israelites for his work; they were
his fighting men, commanders of his captains, and commanders of his
chariots and charioteers. 10
They
were also King Solomon's chief officials--two hundred and fifty
officials supervising the men.
11
Solomon
brought Pharaoh's daughter up from the City of David to the palace he
had built for her, for he said, "My wife must not live in the
palace of David king of Israel, because the places the ark of the
LORD has entered are holy."
12
On
the altar of the LORD that he had built in front of the portico,
Solomon sacrificed burnt offerings to the LORD, 13
according
10
to the daily requirement for offerings commanded by Moses for
Sabbaths, New Moons and the three annual feasts--the Feast of
Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks and the Feast of Tabernacles. 14
In
keeping with the ordinance of his father David, he appointed the
divisions of the priests for their duties, and the Levites to lead
the praise and to assist the priests according to each day's
requirement. He also appointed the gatekeepers by divisions for the
various gates, because this was what David the man of God had
ordered. 15
They
did not deviate from the king's commands to the priests or to the
Levites in any matter, including that of the treasuries.
16
All
Solomon's work was carried out, from the day the foundation of the
temple of the LORD was laid until its completion. So the temple of
the LORD was finished.
17
Then
Solomon went to Ezion Geber and Elath on the coast of Edom. 18
And
Hiram sent him ships commanded by his own officers, men who knew the
sea. These, with Solomon's men, sailed to Ophir and brought back four
hundred and fifty talents C
of gold, which they delivered to King Solomon.
9
1
When
the queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's fame, she came to Jerusalem to
test him with hard questions. Arriving with a very great
caravan--with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, 11
and precious stones--she came to Solomon and talked with him about
all she had on her mind. 2
Solomon
answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for him to explain
to her. 3
When
the queen of Sheba saw the wisdom of Solomon, as well as the palace
he had built, 4
the
food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending
servants in their robes, the cupbearers in their robes and the burnt
offerings he made at A
the temple of the LORD, she was overwhelmed.
5
She
said to the king, "The report I heard in my own country about
your achievements and your wisdom is true. 6
But
I did not believe what they said until I came and saw with my own
eyes. Indeed, not even half the greatness of your wisdom was told me;
you have far exceeded the report I heard. 7
How
happy your men must be! How happy your officials, who continually
stand before you and hear your wisdom! 8
Praise
be to the LORD your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on
his throne as king to rule for the LORD your God. Because of the love
of your God for Israel and his desire to uphold them forever, he has
made you king over them, to maintain justice and righteousness."
9
Then
she gave the king 120 talents B
of gold, large quantities of spices, and precious stones. There had
never been such spices as those the queen of Sheba gave to King
Solomon.
10
(The
men of Hiram and the men of Solomon brought gold from Ophir; they
also brought algumwood C
and precious stones. 11
The
king used the algumwood to make steps for the temple of the LORD and
for the royal palace, and to make harps and lyres for the 12
musicians. Nothing like them had ever been seen in Judah.)
12
King
Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for; he
gave her more than she had brought to him. Then she left and returned
with her retinue to her own country.
13
The
weight of the gold that Solomon received yearly was 666 talents, D
14
not
including the revenues brought in by merchants and traders. Also all
the kings of Arabia and the governors of the land brought gold and
silver to Solomon.
15
King
Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; six hundred
bekas E
of hammered gold went into each shield. 16
He
also made three hundred small shields of hammered gold, with three
hundred bekas F
of gold in each shield. The king put them in the Palace of the Forest
of Lebanon.
17
Then
the king made a great throne inlaid with ivory and overlaid with pure
gold.
18
The
throne had six steps, and a footstool of gold was attached to it. On
both sides of the seat were armrests, with a lion standing beside
each of them. 19
Twelve
lions stood on the six steps, one at either end of each step. Nothing
like it had ever been made for any other kingdom. 20
All
King Solomon's goblets were gold, and all the household articles in
the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. Nothing was made
of silver, because silver was considered of little value in Solomon's
day.
21
The
king had a fleet of trading ships G
manned by Hiram's H
men. Once every three years it returned, carrying gold, silver and
ivory, and apes and baboons. 13
22
King
Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of
the earth.
23
All
the kings of the earth sought audience with Solomon to hear the
wisdom God had put in his heart. 24
Year
after year, everyone who came brought a gift--articles of silver and
gold, and robes, weapons and spices, and horses and mules.
25
Solomon
had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand
horses, I
which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem.
26
He
ruled over all the kings from the River J
to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt.
27
The
king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as
plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills. 28
Solomon's
horses were imported from Egypt K
and from all other countries.
29
As
for the other events of Solomon's reign, from beginning to end, are
they not written in the records of Nathan the prophet, in the
prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite and in the visions of Iddo the seer
concerning Jeroboam son of Nebat? 30
Solomon
reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years. 31
Then
he rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his
father. And Rehoboam his son succeeded him as king.
10
1
Rehoboam
went to Shechem, for all the Israelites had gone there to make him
king. 2
When
Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled
from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. 3
So
they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel went to Rehoboam and
said to him: 4
"Your
father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and
the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you."
5
Rehoboam
answered, "Come back to me in three days." So the people
went away.
6
Then
King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon
during his lifetime. "How would you advise me to answer these
people?" he asked.
7
They
replied, "If you will be kind to these people and please them
and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants."
8
But
Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the
young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. 9
He
asked them, "What is your advice? How should we answer these
people who say to me, `Lighten the yoke your father put on us'?"
10
The
young men who had grown up with him replied, "Tell the people
who have said to you, `Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make
our yoke lighter'--tell them, `My little finger is thicker than my
father's waist. 11
My
father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My
father scourged you with whips; I will scourge 14
you with scorpions.' "
12
Three
days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the
king had said, "Come back to me in three days." 13
The
king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders, 14
he
followed the advice of the young men and said, "My father made
your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you
with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions." 15
So
the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was
from God, to fulfill the word the LORD had spoken to Jeroboam son of
Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.
16
When
all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered
the king:
"What
share do we have in David,
what
part in Jesse's son?
To
your tents, O Israel!
Look
after your own house, O David!"
So
all the Israelites went home. 17
But
as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam
still ruled over them.
18
King
Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, A
who was in charge of forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to
death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and
escape to Jerusalem. 19
So
Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

NEW
TESTAMENT:
ROMANS: 8:9 - 25
9
You,
however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit,
if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the
Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
10
But
if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your
spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11
And
if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you,
he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal
bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.
12
Therefore,
brothers, we have an obligation--but it is not to the sinful nature,
to live according to it. 13
For
if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by
the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live,
14
because
those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15
For
you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear,
but you received the Spirit of sonship. G
And by him we cry, "Abba,
H
Father."
16
The
Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.
17
Now
if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with
Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may
also share in his glory.
18
I
consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the
glory that will be revealed in us. 19
The
creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be
revealed. 20
For
the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but
by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21
that
I
the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and
brought into 16
the glorious freedom of the children of God.
22
We
know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of
childbirth right up to the present time. 23
Not
only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,
groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the
redemption of our bodies.
24
For
in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all.
Who hopes for what he already has? 25
But
if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. 17

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
