PSALMS: 1
1 How blessed are those who reject the advice of the wicked,
don't stand on the way of sinners or sit where scoffers sit!
2 Their delight is in ADONAI's Torah;
on his Torah they meditate day and night.
3 They are like trees planted by streams -they bear their fruit in season,
their leaves never wither, everything they do succeeds.
4 Not so the wicked, who are like chaff driven by the wind.
5 For this reason the wicked won't stand up to the judgment,
nor will sinners at the gathering of the righteous.
6 For ADONAI watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked is doomed.
PSALMS: 31
1 For the leader.
A psalm of David:
In you, ADONAI, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
in your justice, save me!
2 Turn your ear toward me, come quickly to my rescue,
be for me a rock of strength, a fortress to keep me safe.
3 Since you are my rock and fortress, lead me and guide me for your name's sake.
4 Free me from the net they have hidden to catch me, because you are my strength.
5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;
you will redeem me, ADONAI, God of truth.
6 I hate those who serve worthless idols;
as for me, I trust in ADONAI.
7 I will rejoice and be glad in your grace,
for you see my affliction,
you know how distressed I am.
8 You did not hand me over to the enemy;
you set my feet where I can move freely.
9 Show me favor, ADONAI, for I am in trouble.
My eyes grow dim with anger, my soul and body as well.
10 For my life is worn out with sorrow and my years with sighing;
my strength gives out under my guilt, and my bones are wasting away.
11 I am scorned by all my adversaries, and even more by my neighbors;
even to acquaintances I am an object of fear when they see me in the street,
they turn away from me.
12 Like a dead man, I have passed from their minds;
I have become like a broken pot.
13 All I hear is whispering, terror is all around me;
they plot together against me, scheming to take my life.
14 But I, I trust in you, ADONAI; I say, "You are my God."
15 My times are in your hand;
rescue me from my enemies' power, from those who persecute me.
16 Make your face shine on your servant;
in your grace, save me.
17 ADONAI, don't let me be put to shame,
for I have called on you;
let the wicked be put to shame, l
et them be silenced in Sh'ol.
18 May lying lips be struck dumb,
that speak insolently against the righteous with such pride and contempt.
19 But oh, how great is your goodness,
which you have stored up for those who fear you,
which you do for those who take refuge in you, before people's very eyes!
20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from human plots,
you conceal them in your shelter, safe from contentious tongues.
21 Blessed be ADONAI!
For he has shown me his amazing grace when I was in a city under siege.
22 As for me, in my alarm I said, "I have been cut off from your sight!
"Nevertheless, you heard my pleas when I cried out to you.
23 Love ADONAI, you faithful of his.
ADONAI preserves the loyal, but the proud he repays in full.
24 Be strong, and fill your hearts with courage,
all of you who hope in ADONAI.
PSALMS: 61
1 For the leader.
A psalm of David:
In you, ADONAI, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame; in your justice, save me!

PSALMS: 91
1 You who live in the shelter of 'Elyon,
who spend your nights in the shadow of Shaddai,
2 who say to ADONAI,
"My refuge!
My fortress!
My God, in whom I trust!"
3 he will rescue you from the trap of the hunter and from the plague of calamities;
4 he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his truth is a shield and protection.
5 You will not fear the terrors of night or the arrow that flies by day,
6 or the plague that roams in the dark,
or the scourge that wreaks havoc at noon.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand;
but it won't come near you.
8 Only keep your eyes open, and you will see how the wicked are punished.
9 For you have made ADONAI, the Most High,
who is my refuge, your dwelling-place.
10 No disaster will happen to you,
no calamity will come near your tent;
11 for he will order his angels to care for you and guard you wherever you go.
12 They will carry you in their hands,
so that you won't trip on a stone.
13 You will tread down lions and snakes,
young lions and serpents you will trample underfoot.
14 "Because he loves me, I will rescue him;
because he knows my name, I will protect him.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him.
I will be with him when he is in trouble.
I will extricate him and bring him honor.
16 I will satisfy him with long life and show him my salvation."
PSALMS: 121
1 A song of ascents:
If I raise my eyes to the hills,
from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from ADONAI,
the maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip -your guardian is not asleep.
4 No, the guardian of Isra'el never slumbers or sleeps.
5 ADONAI is your guardian; at your right hand
ADONAI provides you with shade
6 the sun can't strike you during the day or even the moon at night.
7 ADONAI will guard you against all harm;
he will guard your life.
8 ADONAI will guard your coming and going from now on and forever.
PROVERBS: 1
1 The proverbs of Shlomo the son of David, king of Isra'el,
2 are for learning about wisdom and discipline; f
or understanding words expressing deep insight;
3 for gaining an intelligently disciplined life,
doing what is right, just and fair;
4 for endowing with caution those who don't think and the
young person with knowledge and discretion.
5 Someone who is already wise will hear and learn still more;
someone who already understands will gain the ability to counsel well;
6 he will understand proverbs, obscure expressions,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.
7 The fear of ADONAI is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
8 My son, heed the discipline of your father,
and do not abandon the teaching of your mother;
9 they will be a garland to grace your head,
a medal of honor for your neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice you,
don't go along with them.
11 Suppose they say, "Come with us:
we'll ambush somebody and kill him,
we'll waylay some harmless soul, just for fun;
12 we'll swallow him alive, like Sh'ol, whole,
like those who descend to the pit;
13 we'll find everything he has of value,
we'll fill our homes with loot!
14 Throw in your lot with us;
we'll share a common purse"-
15 my son, don't go along with them,
don't set foot on their path;
16 Their feet run to evil, they rush to shed blood.
17 For in vain is the net baited if any bird can see it;
18 rather, they are ambushing themselves
to shed their own blood, waylaying themselves.
19 So are the ways of all greedy for gain -it takes the lives of those who get it.
20 Wisdom calls aloud in the open air and raises her voice in the public places;
21 she calls out at streetcorners and speaks out at entrances to city gates:
22 "How long, you whose lives have no purpose,
will you love thoughtless living?
How long will scorners find pleasure in mocking?
How long will fools hate knowledge?
23 Repent when I reprove -I will pour out my spirit to you,
I will make my words known to you.
24 Because you refused when I called,
and no one paid attention when I put out my hand,
25 but instead you neglected my counsel and would not accept my reproof;
26 I, in turn, will laugh at your distress,
and mock when terror comes over you
27 yes, when terror overtakes you like a storm and your disaster approaches like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble assail you.
28 Then they will call me, but I won't answer;
they will seek me earnestly, but they won't find me.
29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of ADONAI,
30 they refused my counsel and despised my reproof.
31 So they will bear the consequences of their own way
and be overfilled with their own schemes.
32 For the aimless wandering of the thoughtless will kill them,
and the smug overconfidence of fools will destroy them;
33 but those who pay attention to me will live securely,
untroubled by fear of misfortune."
OLD TESTAMENT: JOB 1:1 - 3:26
1:1 There was a man in the land of `Utz, whose name was Iyov. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God, and turned away from evil. 2 There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 3 His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east. 4 His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. 5 It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Iyov sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Iyov said, "It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts." Thus did Iyov continually. 6 Now it happened on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, that Hasatan also came among them. 7 The LORD said to Hasatan, "Where have you come from?" Then Hasatan answered the LORD, and said, "From going back and forth in the eretz, and from walking up and down in it." 8 The LORD said to Hasatan, "Have you considered my servant, Iyov? For there is none like him in the eretz, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil." 9Then Hasatan answered the LORD, and said, "Does Iyov fear God for nothing? 10 Haven't you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. 11 But put forth your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce you to your face." 12 The LORD said to Hasatan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don't put forth your hand." So Hasatan went forth from the presence of the LORD. 13 It fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house, 14 that there came a messenger to Iyov, and said, "The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and the Seva'im attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you." 16 While he was still speaking, there also came another, and said, "The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you." 17 While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "The Kasdim made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you." 18 While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house, 19 and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you." 20 Then Iyov arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped. 21 He said, "Naked I came out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD." 22 In all this, Iyov did not sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing.
2:1 Again it happened on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, that Hasatan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. 2 The LORD said to Hasatan, "Where have you come from?" Hasatan answered the LORD, and said, "From going back and forth in the eretz, and from walking up and down in it." 3 The LORD said to Hasatan, "Have you considered my servant Iyov? For there is none like him in the eretz, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. He still maintains his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause." 4 Hasatan answered the LORD, and said, "Skin for skin. Yes, all that a man has will he give for his life. 5 But put forth your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will renounce you to your face." 6 The LORD said to Hasatan, "Behold, he is in your hand. Only spare his life." 7 So Hasatan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and struck Iyov with painful sores from the sole of his foot to his head. 8 He took for himself a potsherd to scrape himself with, and he sat among the ashes. 9 Then his wife said to him, "Do you still maintain your integrity? Renounce God, and die." 10 But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?" In all this Iyov didn't sin with his lips. 11 Now when Iyov's three friends heard of all this evil that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Elifaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuchite, and Tzofar the Na`amatite, and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him. 12 When they lifted up their eyes from a distance, and didn't recognize him, they raised their voices, and wept; and they each tore his robe, and sprinkled dust on their heads toward the sky. 13 So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.
3:1 After this Iyov opened his mouth, and cursed the day of his birth. 2 Iyov answered: 3 "Let the day perish in which I was born, The night which said, 'There is a man-child conceived.' 4 Let that day be darkness; Don't let God from above seek for it, Neither let the light shine on it. 5 Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own. Let a cloud dwell on it. Let all that makes black the day terrify it. 6 As for that night, let thick darkness seize on it. Let it not rejoice among the days of the year. Let it not come into the number of the months. 7 Behold, let that night be barren. Let no joyful voice come therein. 8 Let them curse it who curse the day, Who are ready to rouse up livyatan. 9 Let the stars of the twilight of it be dark. Let it look for light, but have none, Neither let it see the eyelids of the morning, 10 Because it didn't shut up the doors of my mother's womb, Nor did it hide trouble from my eyes. 11 "Why didn't I die from the womb? Why didn't I give up the spirit when my mother bore me?12 Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breast, that I should suck? 13 For now should I have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept, then I would have been at rest, 14 With kings and counselors of the eretz, Who built up waste places for themselves; 15 Or with princes who had gold, Who filled their houses with silver: 16 Or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been, As infants who never saw light. 17 There the wicked cease from troubling; There the weary are at rest. 18 There the prisoners are at ease together. They don't hear the voice of the taskmaster. 19 The small and the great are there. The servant is free from his master. 20"Why is light given to him who is in misery, Life to the bitter in soul, 21 Who long for death, but it doesn't come; Dig for it more than for hidden treasures, 22Who rejoice exceedingly, Are glad, when they can find the grave? 23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, Whom God has hedged in? 24 For my sighing comes before I eat, My groanings are poured out like water. 25 For the thing which I fear comes on me, That which I am afraid of comes to me. 26 I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest; But trouble comes."
NEW TESTAMENT: 1 CORINTHIANS 14:1 - 17
14:1 Follow after love, and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
2 For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands; but in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
3 But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation.
4 He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly.
5 Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but rather that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up.
6 But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?
7 Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they didn't give a distinction in the sounds, how would it be known what is piped or harped?
8 For if the shofar gave an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for war?
9 So also you, unless you uttered by the tongue words easy to understand, how would it be known what is spoken? For you would be speaking into the air.
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of sounds in the world, and none of them is without meaning.
11 If then I don't know the meaning of the sound, I would be to him who speaks a foreigner, and he who speaks would be a foreigner to me.
12 So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may abound to the building up of the assembly.
13 Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret.
14 For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
16 Else if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the "Amein" at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn't know what you say?
17 For you most assuredly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up.

3 כעצים נטועים על נחלים, פרים בעונתם,
עליהם לא יבול לעולם, כל מעשיהם יצליח.
4 לא כן רשעים, כמוץ רוח.
5 לכן לא יעמדו רשעים במשפט,
וגם לא יחטאו חוטאים בקהל צדיקים. ו כי ה' שומר דרך צדיקים, ודרך רשעים נידונה.

אפילו למכרים אני מושא פחד בראותני ברחוב,
מפני יפנו.
12 כמת, נעלמתי מלבונם;
הייתי כמו סיר שבור.
13 לחישה בלבד אני שומע, אימה סביבי. יַחַד זִמְרוּ עָלַי, זוֹמְרִים לִשְׁחִי.
14 אֲנִי, בָּךְ אֲדֹנִי בְּטַחַת אֲשֶׁר אֹרֵר: "אַתָּה אֱלֹהַי".
15 עַתִּי בִּידךָ, הוֹשִׁיעִי מִמַּעַד צַדִּיקִי, מֵרוֹדְפֵינִי.
16 הָאִיר פָּנֶיךָ עַל עַבְדֶךָ, בְּחַסְדֶּךָ הוֹשִׁיעִי.
17 אֲדֹנִי, אַל אֶבְשִׁי,
כִּי קָרָאתִיךָ; יַבְּשִׁיעוּ רָשָׁעִים,
יַדְמוּ בְּשׁוּל.
18 יַחֲרוּ שְׁפָתִים שַׁקְרִים,
הַמְדַבְּרִים חֲצָפִים בְּגַוָּה וְבוֹז.
19 אֲבָל מַה טוֹבְךָ,
אֲשֶׁר צָרַתָּ לַיְרָאִיךָ,
אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה עוֹשֶׂה לַחֲסֵי בִּךָ, לִעֵינֵי עַם. 20 במחסה לפגנך אתה מסתיר אותם ממזימות אדם,
אתה מסתיר אותם במחסך, בטוח מלשון ריב.
21 ברוך ה'! כי הראה לי חסדו הפליא בהיותי בעיר נצורה.
22 ואני בבהלתי אמרתי: "נגרדתי מעיניך!"
"ובכל זאת שמעת תחנוני כשצעקתי אליך.
23 אהבו את ה', נאמניו. ה' שומר נאמנים, וגאים ישלם.
24 חזקו, ומלאו את לבכם אומץ,
כל מי שמקוה לה'.

בך ה' חסיתי,
לעולם לא אבוש, בצדקך הושיעני.
2 הטה אזנך אליי, מהרה להצילני,

הובילני והנחיני למען שמך.

14 ואני, בך, ה', בוטח;
אומר: "אתה אלוהי".
15 עתיי בידך; הצילני מיד אויבי, מרודפי.
16 האיר פניך על עבדך; בחסדך הושיעני.
17 יהוה, אל תחשיב אותי,
כי קראתיך; יתביישו רשעים,
ישתקו בשאול.
18 תִדַּמְרוּ שִׁפָּתִים שַׁקְרִים,
הַמְדַבְּרִים חֲצָפִים כַּעֲלֵי צַדִּיק בְּגָוָה וּבוֹז.
19 וּמַה גָּדוֹל טוֹבְךָ,
אֲשֶׁר שָׁמַרְתָּ לַיְרָאִיךָ,
אֲשֶׁר תַּעֲשֶׂה לַחֲסֵי בֶּךָ,
לעיני אנשים!
20 בְסֵת פְּנֵיךָ תְסְתִּירָם מִזִּימְלוֹת אָדָם,
תְסְתִּירָם בְּסֵתֶךָ, מִשְׁפָּנִים מִדִּבְרֵי מִדִּבְרֵי מִשְׁפָּט.
21 ברוך ה'! כי הראה לי חסדו הפליא בהיותי בעיר נצורה.
22 ואני בבהלתי אמרתי: "נגרעתי מעיניך!"
ובכל זאת שמעת תחנוני כשקראתי אליך.
23 אהבו את ה', נאמניו. ה' שומר נאמנים,
וגאים ישלם.
24 חזקו, ומלאו את לבכם אומץ,
כל מקווים לה'.

1 יושב מחסה עליון,
בצל שדי לילותיך,
2 האומרים לה':
"מחסי,
מבצרי,
אלוהיי, בו בטחתי!"

הברית הישנה: איוב א':1 - ג':26
א':1 איש בארץ עוץ ושמו איוב. האיש ההוא היה תמים וישר וירא אלהים וסור מרע. ב' ויולדו לו שבעה בנים ושלוש בנות. ג' ורכושו היה שבעת אלפים צאן ושלושת אלפים גמלים וחמש מאות צמד בקר וחמש מאות אתונות ובית גדול מאוד, והאיש הזה היה גדול מכל בני מזרח. ד' הלכו בניו ויעשו משתה בבית איש ביום הולדתו, וישלחו ויקראו לשלוש אחיותיהם לאכול ולשתות עמם. ה' ויהי כאשר כלאו ימי משתהם, וישלח איוב ויקדישם, וישכם בבוקר ויעלה עולות כמספר כולם. כי אמר איוב: "אולי חטאו בני ויתרו באלוהים בלבבם". כך עשה איוב תמיד. ו ויהי ביום באו בני האלהים להתייצב לפני ה', ויבוא גם השטן בתוכם. ז ויאמר ה' אל השטן: "מאין באת?" ויען השטן את ה' ויאמר: "מהתהלך בארץ וממהלך בה". ח ויאמר ה' אל השטן: "התבוננת על עבדי איוב? כי אין כמוהו בארץ, איש תם וישר, ירא אלהים, ושוב מרע". ט ויען השטן את-יהוה ויאמר: "האם לחינם ירא איוב את-אלוהים? 10 הגדה עשית סביבו, סביב ביתו, סביב כל אשר לו, מסביב. ברכת מעשה ידיו, ורכושו גדל בארץ. 11 וְעַתָּה שִׁלֵחַ יָדֶךָ וְגַע בְּכָל אֲשֶׁר לוֹ, וְיִסְתָּךְ לְפָנֶיךָ." 12 ויאמר ה' אל-הַשְׁטָן: "הִנֵּה כָּל-אֲשֶׁר לוֹ בְּיָדֶךָ, רַק עַל-עַל-עַל-עַל-עַל-פָּנֶיךָ, וַיֵּצֵא השטן מִפְּנֵי ה'." 13 ויהי ביום אחד, כאשר בניו ובנותיו אכלו ושותים יין בבית אחיהם הבכור. 14 ויבא מלאך אל איוב ויאמר: "הבקר חורש והחמורים רעים על ידם. 15 והסבעים תקפו ולקחו אותם. גם את העבדים הרגו לפי חרב, ואני לבדי בלטתי להגיד לך." 16 עודנו מדבר, ויבא אחר ויאמר: "אש אלוהים נפלה מן השמים, ותשרף את הצאן ואת העבדים, ותאכל אותם, ואני לבדי בלטתי להגיד לך." 17 עודנו מדבר, ויבא אחר ויאמר: "הכשדים עשו שלוש גדודות, ויפלו על הגמלים, ולקחו אותם, וגם את העבדים הרגו לפי חרב, ואני לבדי בלטתי להגיד לך." 18 עודנו מדבר ויבא גם אחר ויאמר בניך ובנותיך אכלו ושותים יין בבית אחיהן הבכור. 19 והנה רוח גדולה באה מן המדבר ותפגע בארבע פינות הבית ותפל על הנערים ומתו. אני לבדי נמלטתי להגיד לכם. 20 ויקם איוב ויקרע את מעילו ויגל את ראשו ויפל ארצה וישתחווה. 21 ויאמר: עירום יצאתי מרחם אמי ועירום אשוב שמה. ה' נתן וה' לקח. ברוך שם ה'. 22 בכל זאת לא חטא איוב ולא האשים את אלהים בעון.
2:1 ויהי ביום באו בני האלהים להתייצב לפני ה' ויבוא גם השטן בתוכם להתייצב לפני ה'.2 ויאמר ה' אל השטן מאין באת ענה השטן את ה' ויאמר מלהלך בארץ וממהלך בה.3 ויאמר ה' אל השטן הבטת אל עבדי איוב כי אין כמוהו בארץ איש תם וישר ירא אלהים ושוב מרע עוד הוא שומר תמימותו כי הסית אותי עליו להרוסו ללא סיבה.4 ענה השטן את ה' ויאמר עור תחת עור וכל אשר לאדם יתן בעד נפשו. 5 ועתה שלח ידך ונגע בעצמו ובבשרו ויתנכח בך על פניך. ו ויאמר יהוה אל השטן הנה הוא בידך רק חוס על נפשו. ז ויצא השטן מלפני יהוה ויכה את איוב פצעים כואבים מכף רגלו ועד ראשו. ח ויקח לו חרס לגרד בו וישב באפר. ט ותאמר לו אשתו העוֹד תשמור על תמימותך? כזב את אלוהים ומות. 10 ויאמר לה כדברת נשים נבלות מה נקבל את הטוב מיד אלוהים והרע לא נקבל בכל זאת לא חטא איוב בשפתיו. יא וכאשר שמעו שלושת רעיו של איוב את כל הרעה הזאת אשר באה עליו, באו איש ממקומו: אליפז התימני ובלדד השוחי וצופר הנעמתי, וקבעו יחד לבוא להרגיש עליו ולנחמו. יב וישאו את עיניהם מרחוק ולא הכירוהו, ויקמו את קולם ויבכו, וקרעו איש את גלימותיו ויזרו עפר על ראשו השמים. יג וישבו עמו על הארץ שבעת ימים ושבעה לילות, ואיש לא דיבר אליו דבר, כי ראו כי גדול צערו מאוד.

י"ד:1 רדפו אחר האהבה, וחפצו בכל ליבכם במתנות רוחניות, ובעיקר להתנבא.
2 כי המדבר בשפה לא מדבר לבני אדם, אלא לאלוהים; כי איש אינו מבין; אלא ברוח הוא מדבר סודות.
3 אבל המנבא מדבר לבני אדם כדי לבנות אותם, לעידוד ולנחמה.
4 המדבר בשפה בונה את עצמו, אבל המנבא בונה את הקהילה.
5 אני רוצה שכולכם תדברו בשפות אחרות, אלא שתתנבאו. כי גדול המנבא מהמדבר בשפות אחרות, אלא אם כן הוא מתרגם, כדי שהקהילה תבנה. 6 אבל עכשיו, אחים, אם אבוא אליכם ואדבר בשפות אחרות, מה אועיל לכם, אם לא אדבר אליכם או בהתגלות, או בדעת, או בנבואה, או בהוראה?
