1
Why, A O LORD, do you stand far off?
Why
do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
2
In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,
who
are caught in the schemes he devises.
3
He boasts of the cravings of his heart;
he
blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
4
In his pride the wicked does not seek him;
in
all his thoughts there is no room for God.
5
His ways are always prosperous;
he
is haughty and your laws are far from him;
he
sneers at all his enemies.
6
He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me;
I'll
always be happy and never have trouble."
7
His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats;
trouble
and evil are under his tongue.
8
He lies in wait near the villages;
from
ambush he murders the innocent,
watching
in secret for his victims.
9
He lies in wait like a lion in cover;
he
lies in wait to catch the helpless;
he
catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
10
His victims are crushed, they collapse;
they
fall under his strength.
11
He says to himself, "God has forgotten;
he
covers his face and never sees." [1]
12
Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God.
Do
not forget the helpless.
13
Why does the wicked man revile God?
Why
does he say to himself,
"He
won't call me to account"?
14
But you, O God, do see trouble and grief;
you
consider it to take it in hand.
The
victim commits himself to you;
you
are the helper of the fatherless.
15
Break the arm of the wicked and evil man;
call
him to account for his wickedness
that
would not be found out.
16
The LORD is King for ever and ever;
the
nations will perish from his land.
17
You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted;
you
encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
18
defending the fatherless and the oppressed,
in
order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more. [2]

For
the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
1
I waited patiently for the LORD;
he
turned to me and heard my cry.
2
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out
of the mud and mire;
he
set my feet on a rock
and
gave me a firm place to stand.
3
He put a new song in my mouth,
a
hymn of praise to our God.
Many
will see and fear
and
put their trust in the LORD.
4
Blessed is the man
who
makes the LORD his trust,
who
does not look to the proud,
to
those who turn aside to false gods. A
5
Many, O LORD my God,
are
the wonders you have done.
The
things you planned for us
no
one can recount to you;
were
I to speak and tell of them,
they
would be too many to declare.
6
Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but
my ears you have pierced BC;
burnt
offerings and sin offerings
you
did not require.
7
Then I said, "Here I am, I have come--
it
is written about me in the scroll. D [3]
8
I desire to do your will, O my God;
your
law is within my heart."
9
I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;
I
do not seal my lips,
as
you know, O LORD.
10
I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
I
speak of your faithfulness and salvation.
I
do not conceal your love and your truth
from
the great assembly.
11
Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD;
may
your love and your truth always protect me.
12
For troubles without number surround me;
my
sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.
They
are more than the hairs of my head,
and
my heart fails within me.
13
Be pleased, O LORD, to save me;
O
LORD, come quickly to help me.
14
May all who seek to take my life
be
put to shame and confusion;
may
all who desire my ruin
be
turned back in disgrace.
15
May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"
be
appalled at their own shame.
16
But may all who seek you
rejoice
and be glad in you;
may
those who love your salvation always say,
"The
LORD be exalted!"[4]
17
Yet I am poor and needy;
may
the Lord think of me.
You
are my help and my deliverer;
O
my God, do not delay. [5]

For

Hasten, O God, to save me;
O
LORD, come quickly to help me.
2
May those who seek my life
be
put to shame and confusion;
may
all who desire my ruin
be
turned back in disgrace.
3
May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"
turn
back because of their shame.
4
But may all who seek you
rejoice
and be glad in you;
may
those who love your salvation always say,
"Let
God be exalted!"

A
psalm. For giving thanks.
1
Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
2
Worship the LORD with gladness;
come
before him with joyful songs.
3
Know that the LORD is God.
It
is he who made us, and we are his A;
we
are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and
his courts with praise;
give
thanks to him and praise his name.
5
For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his
faithfulness continues through all generations. [7]
PSALMS: 130
A
song of ascents.
1
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;
2
O Lord, hear my voice.
Let
your ears be attentive
to
my cry for mercy.
3
If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins,
O
Lord, who could stand?
4
But with you there is forgiveness;
therefore
you are feared.
5
I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and
in his word I put my hope.
6
My soul waits for the Lord
more
than watchmen wait for the morning,
more
than watchmen wait for the morning.
7
O Israel, put your hope in the LORD,
for
with the LORD is unfailing love
and
with him is full redemption.
8
He himself will redeem Israel
from
all their sins. [8]
PROVERBS: 10
10
1 The proverbs of Solomon:
A
wise son brings joy to his father,
but
a foolish son grief to his mother.
2
Ill-gotten treasures are of no value,
but
righteousness delivers from death.
3
The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry
but
he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
4
Lazy hands make a man poor,
but
diligent hands bring wealth.
5
He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son,
but
he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
6
Blessings crown the head of the righteous,
but
violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. A
7
The memory of the righteous will be a blessing,
but
the name of the wicked will rot.
8
The wise in heart accept commands,
but
a chattering fool comes to ruin.
9
The man of integrity walks securely,
but
he who takes crooked paths will be found out.
10
He who winks maliciously causes grief,
and
a chattering fool comes to ruin.
11
The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,
but
violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. [9]
12
Hatred stirs up dissension,
but
love covers over all wrongs.
13
Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning,
but
a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment.
14
Wise men store up knowledge,
but
the mouth of a fool invites ruin.
15
The wealth of the rich is their fortified city,
but
poverty is the ruin of the poor.
16
The wages of the righteous bring them life,
but
the income of the wicked brings them punishment.
17
He who heeds discipline shows the way to life,
but
whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
18
He who conceals his hatred has lying lips,
and
whoever spreads slander is a fool.
19
When words are many, sin is not absent,
but
he who holds his tongue is wise.
20
The tongue of the righteous is choice silver,
but
the heart of the wicked is of little value.
21
The lips of the righteous nourish many,
but
fools die for lack of judgment.
22
The blessing of the LORD brings wealth,
and
he adds no trouble to it. [10]
23
A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct,
but
a man of understanding delights in wisdom.
24
What the wicked dreads will overtake him;
what
the righteous desire will be granted.
25
When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone,
but
the righteous stand firm forever.
26
As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
so
is a sluggard to those who send him.
27
The fear of the LORD adds length to life,
but
the years of the wicked are cut short.
28
The prospect of the righteous is joy,
but
the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.
29
The way of the LORD is a refuge for the righteous,
but
it is the ruin of those who do evil.
30
The righteous will never be uprooted,
but
the wicked will not remain in the land.
31
The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,
but
a perverse tongue will be cut out.
32
The lips of the righteous know what is fitting,
but
the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse. [11]
OLD TESTAMENT: LAMENTATIONS 3:1 - 66
3 1
I A am the man who has seen affliction
by the rod of his wrath.
2 He
has driven me away and made me walk
in darkness rather than light;
3 indeed,
he has turned his hand against me
again and again, all day
long.
4 He
has made my skin and my flesh grow old
and has broken my bones.
5 He
has besieged me and surrounded me
with bitterness and
hardship.
6 He
has made me dwell in darkness
like those long dead.
7 He
has walled me in so I cannot escape;
he has weighed me down
with chains.
8 Even
when I call out or cry for help,
he shuts out my prayer.
9 He
has barred my way with blocks of stone;
he has made my paths
crooked.
10 Like
a bear lying in wait,
like a lion in hiding,
11he
dragged me from the path and mangled me
and left me without
help.
12 He
drew his bow
and made me the target
for his arrows. [12]
13 He
pierced my heart
with arrows from his
quiver.
14 I
became the laughingstock of all my people;
they mock me in song all
day long.
15 He
has filled me with bitter herbs
and sated me with gall.
16 He
has broken my teeth with gravel;
he has trampled me in
the dust.
17 I
have been deprived of peace;
I have forgotten what
prosperity is.
18 So
I say, "My splendor is gone
and all that I had hoped
from the LORD."
19 I
remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness and the
gall.
20 I
well remember them,
and my soul is downcast
within me.
21Yet
this I call to mind
and therefore I have
hope:
22 Because
of the LORD's great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions
never fail.
23 They
are new every morning;
great is your
faithfulness. [13]
24 I
say to myself, "The LORD is my portion;
therefore I will wait
for him."
25 The
LORD is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks
him;
26 it
is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the
LORD.
27I
t is good for a man to bear the yoke
while he is young.
28 Let
him sit alone in silence,
for the LORD has laid it
on him.
29 Let
him bury his face in the dust--
there may yet be hope.
30 Let
him offer his cheek to one who would strike him,
and let him be filled
with disgrace.
31 For
men are not cast off
by the Lord forever.
32 Though
he brings grief, he will show compassion,
so great is his
unfailing love.
33 For
he does not willingly bring affliction
or grief to the children
of men. [14]
34 To
crush underfoot
all prisoners in the
land,
35 to
deny a man his rights
before the Most High,
36 to
deprive a man of justice--
would not the Lord see
such things?
37 Who
can speak and have it happen
if the Lord has not
decreed it?
38 Is
it not from the mouth of the Most High
that both calamities and
good things come?
39 Why
should any living man complain
when punished for his
sins?
40 Let
us examine our ways and test them,
and let us return to the
LORD.
41 Let
us lift up our hearts and our hands
to God in heaven, and
say:
42 "We
have sinned and rebelled
and you have not
forgiven.
43 "You
have covered yourself with anger and pursued us;
you have slain without
pity.
44 You
have covered yourself with a cloud
so that no prayer can
get through.
45 You
have made us scum and refuse [15]
among the nations.
46 "All
our enemies have opened their mouths
wide against us.
47 We
have suffered terror and pitfalls,
ruin and
destruction."
48 Streams
of tears flow from my eyes
because my people are
destroyed.
49 My
eyes will flow unceasingly,
without relief,
50 until
the LORD looks down
from heaven and sees.
51 What
I see brings grief to my soul
because of all the women
of my city.
52 Those
who were my enemies without cause
hunted me like a bird.
53 They
tried to end my life in a pit
and threw stones at me;
54 the
waters closed over my head,
and I thought I was
about to be cut off.
55 I
called on your name, O LORD,
from the depths of the
pit.
56 You
heard my plea: "Do not close your ears [16]
to my cry for
relief."
57 You
came near when I called you,
and you said, "Do not fear."
58 O
Lord, you took up my case;
you redeemed my life.
59 You
have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me.
Uphold my cause!
60 You
have seen the depth of their vengeance,
all their plots against
me.
61 O
LORD, you have heard their insults,
all their plots against
me--
62 what
my enemies whisper and mutter
against me all day long.
63 Look
at them! Sitting or standing,
they mock me in their
songs.
64 Pay
them back what they deserve, O LORD,
for what their hands
have done.
65 Put
a veil over their hearts,
and may your curse be on
them!
66 Pursue
them in anger and destroy them
from under the heavens
of the LORD. [17]
NEW TESTAMENT: HEBREWS 1:1 - 14
1 1 In the past God spoke to
our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but
in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of
all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3 The Son is the
radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining
all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins,
he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he
became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior
to theirs.
5 For
to which of the angels did God ever say,
"You are my Son;
today I have
become your Father A"B?
Or again,
"I will be his Father,
and he will
be my Son" C? 6 And again, when God
brings his firstborn into the world, he says,
"Let all God's angels worship him." D
7 In speaking of the angels he
says,
"He makes his angels winds,
his servants
flames of fire." E
8 But about the Son he says,
"Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever,
and
righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated
wickedness;
therefore
God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing
you with the oil of joy." F [18]
10 He
also says,
"In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the
earth,
and the
heavens are the work of your hands.
11 They will
perish, but you remain;
they will all
wear out like a garment.
12 You will roll them up like a robe;
like a
garment they will be changed.
But you
remain the same,
and your
years will never end." G
13 To
which of the angels did God ever say,
"Sit at my right hand
until I make
your enemies
a footstool
for your feet" H?
14 Are
not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit
salvation? [19]
