PSALMS: 8
For
the director of music. According to gittith. A A psalm of
David.
1
O LORD, our Lord,
how
majestic is your name in all the earth!
You
have set your glory
above
the heavens.
2
From the lips of children and infants
you
have ordained praise B
because
of your enemies,
to
silence the foe and the avenger.
3
When I consider your heavens,
the
work of your fingers,
the
moon and the stars,
which
you have set in place,
4
what is man that you are mindful of him,
the
son of man that you care for him?
5
You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings C
and
crowned him with glory and honor.
6
You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
you
put everything under his feet:
7
all flocks and herds,
and
the beasts of the field,
8
the birds of the air,
and
the fish of the sea,
all
that swim the paths of the seas. [1]
9
O LORD, our Lord,
how
majestic is your name in all the earth! [2]
PSALMS: 38
A
psalm of David. A petition.
1
O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger
or
discipline me in your wrath.
2
For your arrows have pierced me,
and
your hand has come down upon me.
3
Because of your wrath there is no health in my body;
my
bones have no soundness because of my sin.
4
My guilt has overwhelmed me
like
a burden too heavy to bear.
5
My wounds fester and are loathsome
because
of my sinful folly.
6
I am bowed down and brought very low;
all
day long I go about mourning.
7
My back is filled with searing pain;
there
is no health in my body.
8
I am feeble and utterly crushed;
I
groan in anguish of heart.
9
All my longings lie open before you, O Lord;
my
sighing is not hidden from you.
10
My heart pounds, my strength fails me;
even
the light has gone from my eyes.
11
My friends and companions avoid me because of my
wounds;
my
neighbors stay far away.
12
Those who seek my life set their traps,
those
who would harm me talk of my ruin;
all
day long they plot deception. [3]
13
I am like a deaf man, who cannot hear,
like
a mute, who cannot open his mouth;
14
I have become like a man who does not hear,
whose
mouth can offer no reply.
15
I wait for you, O LORD;
you
will answer, O Lord my God.
16
For I said, "Do not let them gloat
or
exalt themselves over me when my foot slips."
17
For I am about to fall,
and
my pain is ever with me.
18
I confess my iniquity;
I
am troubled by my sin.
19
Many are those who are my vigorous enemies;
those
who hate me without reason are numerous.
20
Those who repay my good with evil
slander
me when I pursue what is good.
21
O LORD, do not forsake me;
be
not far from me, O my God.
22
Come quickly to help me,
O
Lord my Savior. [4]
PSALMS: 68
For
the director of music. Of David. A psalm. A song.
1
May God arise, may his enemies be scattered;
may
his foes flee before him.
2
As smoke is blown away by the wind,
may
you blow them away;
as
wax melts before the fire,
may
the wicked perish before God.
3
But may the righteous be glad
and
rejoice before God;
may
they be happy and joyful.
4
Sing to God, sing praise to his name,
extol
him who rides on the clouds A--
his
name is the LORD--
and
rejoice before him.
5
A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,
is
God in his holy dwelling.
6
God sets the lonely in families, B
he
leads forth the prisoners with singing;
but
the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
7
When you went out before your people, O God,
when
you marched through the wasteland,
Selah
8
the earth shook,
the
heavens poured down rain,
before
God, the One of Sinai,
before
God, the God of Israel.
9
You gave abundant showers, O God;
you
refreshed your weary inheritance. [5]
10
Your people settled in it,
and
from your bounty, O God, you provided for the poor.
11
The Lord announced the word,
and
great was the company of those who proclaimed it:
12
"Kings and armies
flee in haste;
in the camps men divide the plunder.
Even
while you sleep among the campfires, C
the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver,
its feathers with shining gold."
14
When the Almighty D scattered the kings in
the land,
it
was like snow fallen on Zalmon.
15
The mountains of Bashan are majestic mountains;
rugged
are the mountains of Bashan.
16
Why gaze in envy, O rugged mountains,
at
the mountain where God chooses to reign,
where
the LORD himself will dwell forever?
17
The chariots of God are tens of thousands
and
thousands of thousands;
the
Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.
18
When you ascended on high,
you
led captives in your train;
you
received gifts from men,
even
from E the rebellious--
that
you, F O LORD God, might dwell there.
19
Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior,
who
daily bears our burdens.
Selah
20
Our God is a God who saves;
from
the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death.
[6]
21
Surely God will crush the heads of his enemies,
the
hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins.
22
The Lord says, "I
will bring them from Bashan;
I will bring them from the depths of the sea,
23 that you may plunge your feet in the blood of your foes,
while the tongues of your dogs have their share."
24
Your procession has come into view, O God,
the
procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.
25
In front are the singers, after them the musicians;
with
them are the maidens playing tambourines.
26
Praise God in the great congregation;
praise
the LORD in the assembly of Israel.
27
There is the little tribe of Benjamin, leading them,
there
the great throng of Judah's princes,
and
there the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali.
28
Summon your power, O God G;
show
us your strength, O God, as you have done before.
29
Because of your temple at Jerusalem
kings
will bring you gifts.
30
Rebuke the beast among the reeds,
the
herd of bulls among the calves of the nations.
Humbled,
may it bring bars of silver.
Scatter
the nations who delight in war.
31
Envoys will come from Egypt;
Cush
H will submit herself to God.
32
Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth,
sing
praise to the Lord,
Selah
[7]
33
to him who rides the ancient skies above,
who
thunders with mighty voice.
34
Proclaim the power of God,
whose
majesty is over Israel,
whose
power is in the skies.
35
You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary;
the
God of Israel gives power and strength to his people.
Praise
be to God! [8]
PSALMS: 98
A
psalm.
1
Sing to the LORD a new song,
for
he has done marvelous things;
his
right hand and his holy arm
have
worked salvation for him.
2
The LORD has made his salvation known
and
revealed his righteousness to the nations.
3
He has remembered his love
and
his faithfulness to the house of Israel;
all
the ends of the earth have seen
the
salvation of our God.
4
Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth,
burst
into jubilant song with music;
5
make music to the LORD with the harp,
with
the harp and the sound of singing,
6
with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn--
shout
for joy before the LORD, the King.
7
Let the sea resound, and everything in it,
the
world, and all who live in it.
8
Let the rivers clap their hands,
let
the mountains sing together for joy;
9
let them sing before the LORD,
for
he comes to judge the earth.
He
will judge the world in righteousness
and
the peoples with equity. [9]
PSALMS: 128
A
song of ascents.
1
Blessed are all who fear the LORD,
who
walk in his ways.
2
You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings
and prosperity will be yours.
3
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within
your house;
your
sons will be like olive shoots
around
your table.
4
Thus is the man blessed
who
fears the LORD.
5
May the LORD bless you from Zion
all
the days of your life;
may
you see the prosperity of Jerusalem,
6
and may you live to see your children's children.
Peace
be upon Israel. [10]
PROVERBS: 8
8
1 Does not wisdom call
out?
Does
not understanding raise her voice?
2
On the heights along the way,
where
the paths meet, she takes her stand;
3
beside the gates leading into the city,
at
the entrances, she cries aloud:
4
"To you, O men, I
call out;
I raise my voice to all mankind.
5 You who
are simple, gain prudence;
you who are foolish, gain understanding.
6
Listen, for I have worthy things to say;
I open my lips to speak what is right.
7 My mouth
speaks what is true,
for my lips detest wickedness.
8 All the
words of my mouth are just;
none of them is crooked or perverse.
9 To the
discerning all of them are right;
they are faultless to those who have knowledge.
10 Choose my
instruction instead of silver,
knowledge rather than choice gold,
11 for wisdom
is more precious than rubies,
and nothing you desire can compare with her.
12
"I, wisdom, dwell
together with prudence;
I possess knowledge and discretion.
13 To fear
the LORD is to hate evil;
I hate pride and arrogance,
evil behavior and perverse speech.
14 Counsel
and sound judgment are mine;
I have understanding and power.
15 By me
kings reign
and rulers make laws that are just;
and all nobles who rule on earth. A
17 I love
those who love me,
and those who seek me find me.
18 With me
are riches and honor,
enduring wealth and prosperity.
19
My fruit is better than fine gold;
what I yield surpasses choice silver.
20 I walk in
the way of righteousness,
along the paths of justice,
21 bestowing
wealth on those who love me
and making their treasuries full.
22
"The LORD brought me
forth as the first of his works, BC
before his deeds of old;
23 I was
appointed D from
eternity,
from the beginning, before the world began.
24 When there
were no oceans, I was given birth,
when there were no springs abounding with water;
25 before the
mountains were settled in place,
before the hills, I was given birth,
26 before he
made the earth or its fields
or any of the dust of the world.
27 I was
there when he set the heavens in place,
when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,
28 when he
established the clouds above
and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,
29 when he
gave the sea its boundary
so the waters would not overstep his command,
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.
30 Then I was the craftsman at his side.
I was filled with delight day after day,
rejoicing always in his presence,
31rejoicing in his whole world
and delighting in mankind. [12]
32
"Now then, my sons,
listen to me;
blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Listen to
my instruction and be wise;
do not ignore it.
34 Blessed is
the man who listens to me,
watching daily at my doors,
waiting at my doorway.
35 For
whoever finds me finds life
and receives favor from the LORD.
36 But
whoever fails to find me harms himself;
all who hate me love death." [13]
OLD TESTAMENT: DEUTERONOMY 13:1 - 15:23
13 1
If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears
among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, 2 and if
the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, "Let
us follow other gods" (gods you have not known) "and let us worship
them," 3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or
dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with
all your heart and with all your soul. 4 It is the LORD your God you
must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him
and hold fast to him. 5 That prophet or dreamer must be put to
death, because he preached rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you
out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery; he has tried to turn
you from the way the LORD your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the
evil from among you.
6 If
your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your
closest friend secretly entices you, saying, "Let us go and worship other
gods" (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known,
7 gods
of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the
other), 8 do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do
not spare him or shield him. 9 You must certainly put him to death.
Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all
the people.
10 Stone
him to death, because he tried to turn you away from the LORD your God, who
brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 11 Then all
Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing
again. [14]
12 If you hear it said about one of the towns the LORD your God is
giving you to live in
13 that
wicked men have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray,
saying, "Let us go and worship other gods" (gods you have not known),
14 then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And
if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done
among you, 15 you must certainly put to the sword all who live in
that town. Destroy it completely, A both its people and its
livestock. 16 Gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of
the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole
burnt offering to the LORD your God. It is to remain a ruin forever, never to
be rebuilt. 17 None of those condemned things B shall be
found in your hands, so that the LORD will turn from his fierce anger; he will
show you mercy, have compassion on you, and increase your numbers, as he
promised on oath to your forefathers, 18 because you obey the LORD
your God, keeping all his commands that I am giving you today and doing what is
right in his eyes.
14 1
You are the children of the LORD your God. Do not cut
yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead, 2 for you
are a people holy to the LORD your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of
the earth, the LORD has chosen you to be his treasured possession.
3 Do
not eat any detestable thing. 4 These are the animals you may eat:
the ox, the sheep, the goat, 5 the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer,
the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep. A 6
You [15]
may eat any animal that has a split hoof divided in two and that chews the cud.
7 However, of those that chew the cud or that have a split hoof
completely divided you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the coney. B
Although they chew the cud, they do not have a split hoof; they are ceremonially
unclean for you. 8 The pig is also unclean; although it has a split
hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their
carcasses.
9 Of
all the creatures living in the water, you may eat any that has fins and
scales. 10 But anything that does not have fins and scales you may
not eat; for you it is unclean.
11 You
may eat any clean bird. 12 But these you may not eat: the eagle, the
vulture, the black vulture, 13 the red kite, the black kite, any
kind of falcon, 14 any kind of raven,
15 the
horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, 16 the
little owl, the great owl, the white owl,
17 the
desert owl, the osprey, the cormorant, 18 the stork, any kind of
heron, the hoopoe and the bat.
19 All
flying insects that swarm are unclean to you; do not eat them. 20 But
any winged creature that is clean you may eat.
21 Do
not eat anything you find already dead. You may give it to an alien living in
any of your towns, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. But
you are a people holy to the LORD your God.
Do not cook a young goat
in its mother's milk.
22 Be
sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat
the tithe of your grain, new wine and oil, and the firstborn of your herds and
flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a
dwelling for his Name, so that [16]
you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. 24 But if that
place is too distant and you have been blessed by the LORD your God and cannot
carry your tithe (because the place where the LORD will choose to put his Name
is so far away), 25 then exchange your tithe for silver, and take
the silver with you and go to the place the LORD your God will choose. 26 Use
the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented
drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the
presence of the LORD your God and rejoice. 27 And do not neglect the
Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of
their own.
28 At
the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's produce and
store it in your towns, 29 so that the Levites (who have no
allotment or inheritance of their own) and the aliens, the fatherless and the
widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that
the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
15 1
At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts.
2 This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel the loan
he has made to his fellow Israelite. He shall not require payment from his
fellow Israelite or brother, because the LORD's time for canceling debts has
been proclaimed. 3 You may require payment from a foreigner, but you
must cancel any debt your brother owes you. 4 However, there should
be no poor among you, for in the land the LORD your God is giving you to
possess as your inheritance, he will [17]
richly bless you, 5 if only you fully obey the LORD your God and are
careful to follow all these commands I am giving you today. 6 For
the LORD your God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many
nations but will borrow from none. You will rule over many nations but none
will rule over you.
7 If
there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that
the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward
your poor brother. 8 Rather be openhanded and freely lend him
whatever he needs. 9 Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought:
"The seventh year, the year for canceling debts, is near," so that
you do not show ill will toward your needy brother and give him nothing. He may
then appeal to the LORD against you, and you will be found guilty of sin.
10 Give
generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the
LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your
hand to. 11 There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore
I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and
needy in your land.
12 If
a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, sells himself to you and serves you six
years, in the seventh year you must let him go free. 13 And when you
release him, do not send him away empty-handed. 14 Supply him
liberally from your flock, your threshing floor and your winepress. Give to him
as the LORD your God has blessed you. 15 Remember that you were
slaves in Egypt and the LORD your God redeemed you. That is why I give you this
[18]
command today.
16 But
if your servant says to you, "I do not want to leave you," because he
loves you and your family and is well off with you, 17 then take an
awl and push it through his ear lobe into the door, and he will become your
servant for life. Do the same for your maidservant.
18 Do
not consider it a hardship to set your servant free, because his service to you
these six years has been worth twice as much as that of a hired hand. And the
LORD your God will bless you in everything you do.
19 Set
apart for the LORD your God every firstborn male of your herds and flocks. Do
not put the firstborn of your oxen to work, and do not shear the firstborn of
your sheep. 20 Each year you and your family are to eat them in the
presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose. 21 If an
animal has a defect, is lame or blind, or has any serious flaw, you must not
sacrifice it to the LORD your God. 22 You are to eat it in your own
towns. Both the ceremonially unclean and the clean may eat it, as if it were
gazelle or deer. 23 But you must not eat the blood; pour it out on
the ground like water. [19]
NEW TESTAMENT: LUKE 8:40 - 9:6
40 Now
when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41
Then a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at
Jesus' feet, pleading with him to come to his house
42 because
his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.
As Jesus was on his way,
the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been
subject to bleeding for twelve years, D but no one could heal her. 44
She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately
her bleeding stopped.
45 "Who touched me?" Jesus asked.
When they all denied it,
Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing against
you."
46 But
Jesus said, "Someone touched me; I know that
power has gone out from me."
47 Then
the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at
his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him
and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her,
"Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace."
49 While
Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue
ruler. "Your daughter is dead," he said. "Don't bother the
teacher any more."
50 Hearing
this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid;
just believe, and she will be healed."
51 When
he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except
Peter, John and James, and the child's father [20]
go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child's father and mother.
52 Meanwhile,
all the people were wailing and mourning for her. "Stop wailing," Jesus said. "She
is not dead but asleep."
53 They
laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the
hand and said, "My child, get up!" 55
Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to
give her something to eat.
56 Her
parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had
happened.
9 1
When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave
them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and
he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 He
told them: "Take nothing for the journey--no
staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that
town. 5 If people do not welcome
you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony
against them." 6 So they set out and went from village
to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere. [21]
