PSALMS: 15
A
psalm of David.
1
LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary?
Who
may live on your holy hill?
2
He whose walk is blameless
and
who does what is righteous,
who
speaks the truth from his heart
3
and has no slander on his tongue,
who
does his neighbor no wrong
and
casts no slur on his fellowman,
4
who despises a vile man
but
honors those who fear the LORD,
who
keeps his oath
even
when it hurts,
5
who lends his money without usury
and
does not accept a bribe against the innocent.
He
who does these things
will
never be shaken. [1]
PSALMS: 45
For
the director of music. To the tune of "Lilies." Of the Sons of Korah.
A maskil. A A wedding song.
1
My heart is stirred by a noble theme
as
I recite my verses for the king;
my
tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.
2
You are the most excellent of men
and
your lips have been anointed with grace,
since
God has blessed you forever.
3
Gird your sword upon your side, O mighty one;
clothe
yourself with splendor and majesty.
4
In your majesty ride forth victoriously
in
behalf of truth, humility and righteousness;
let
your right hand display awesome deeds.
5
Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king's
enemies;
let
the nations fall beneath your feet.
6
Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a
scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
7
You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
therefore
God, your God, has set you above your companions
by
anointing you with the oil of joy.
8
All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and
cassia;
from
palaces adorned with ivory
the
music of the strings makes you glad.
9
Daughters of kings are among your honored women;
at
your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.
10
Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear:
Forget
your people and your father's house. [2]
11
The king is enthralled by your beauty;
honor
him, for he is your lord.
12
The Daughter of Tyre will come with a gift, B
men
of wealth will seek your favor.
13
All glorious is the princess within her chamber;
her
gown is interwoven with gold.
14
In embroidered garments she is led to the king;
her
virgin companions follow her
and
are brought to you.
15
They are led in with joy and gladness;
they
enter the palace of the king.
16
Your sons will take the place of your fathers;
you
will make them princes throughout the land.
17
I will perpetuate your memory through all generations;
therefore
the nations will praise you for ever and ever. [3]
PSALMS: 75
For
the director of music. To the tune of "Do Not Destroy." A psalm of
Asaph. A song.
1
We give thanks to you, O God,
we
give thanks, for your Name is near;
men
tell of your wonderful deeds.
2
You say, "I choose
the appointed time;
it is I who judge uprightly.
3 When the
earth and all its people quake,
it is I who hold its pillars firm.
Selah
4
To the arrogant I say, `Boast no more,'
and to the wicked, `Do not lift up your horns.
5 Do not
lift your horns against heaven;
do not speak with outstretched neck.'"
6
No one from the east or the west
or
from the desert can exalt a man.
7
But it is God who judges:
He
brings one down, he exalts another.
8
In the hand of the LORD is a cup
full
of foaming wine mixed with spices;
he
pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
drink
it down to its very dregs.
9
As for me, I will declare this forever;
I
will sing praise to the God of Jacob.
10
I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
but
the horns of the righteous will be lifted up. [4]
PSALMS: 105
1
Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name;
make
known among the nations what he has done.
2
Sing to him, sing praise to him;
tell
of all his wonderful acts.
3
Glory in his holy name;
let
the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.
4
Look to the LORD and his strength;
seek
his face always.
5
Remember the wonders he has done,
his
miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,
6
O descendants of Abraham his servant,
O
sons of Jacob, his chosen ones.
7
He is the LORD our God;
his
judgments are in all the earth.
8
He remembers his covenant forever,
the
word he commanded, for a thousand generations,
9
the covenant he made with Abraham,
the
oath he swore to Isaac.
10
He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree,
to
Israel as an everlasting covenant:
11
"To you I will give
the land of Canaan
as the portion you will inherit."
12
When they were but few in number,
few
indeed, and strangers in it,
13
they wandered from nation to nation,
from
one kingdom to another.
14
He allowed no one to oppress them;
for
their sake he rebuked kings:
15
"Do not touch my
anointed ones;
do my prophets no harm." [5]
16
He called down famine on the land
and
destroyed all their supplies of food;
17
and he sent a man before them--
Joseph,
sold as a slave.
18
They bruised his feet with shackles,
his
neck was put in irons,
19
till what he foretold came to pass,
till
the word of the LORD proved him true.
20
The king sent and released him,
the
ruler of peoples set him free.
21
He made him master of his household,
ruler
over all he possessed,
22
to instruct his princes as he pleased
and
teach his elders wisdom.
23
Then Israel entered Egypt;
Jacob
lived as an alien in the land of Ham.
24
The LORD made his people very fruitful;
he
made them too numerous for their foes,
25
whose hearts he turned to hate his people,
to
conspire against his servants.
26
He sent Moses his servant,
and
Aaron, whom he had chosen.
27
They performed his miraculous signs among them,
his
wonders in the land of Ham.
28
He sent darkness and made the land dark--
for
had they not rebelled against his words?
29
He turned their waters into blood,
causing
their fish to die.
30
Their land teemed with frogs,
which
went up into the bedrooms of their rulers.
31
He spoke, and there came swarms of flies,
and
gnats throughout their country.
32
He turned their rain into hail,
with
lightning throughout their land; [6]
33
he struck down their vines and fig trees
and
shattered the trees of their country.
34
He spoke, and the locusts came,
grasshoppers
without number;
35
they ate up every green thing in their land,
ate
up the produce of their soil.
36
Then he struck down all the firstborn in their land,
the
firstfruits of all their manhood.
37
He brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold,
and
from among their tribes no one faltered.
38
Egypt was glad when they left,
because
dread of Israel had fallen on them.
39
He spread out a cloud as a covering,
and
a fire to give light at night.
40
They asked, and he brought them quail
and
satisfied them with the bread of heaven.
41
He opened the rock, and water gushed out;
like
a river it flowed in the desert.
42
For he remembered his holy promise
given
to his servant Abraham.
43
He brought out his people with rejoicing,
his
chosen ones with shouts of joy;
44
he gave them the lands of the nations,
and
they fell heir to what others had toiled for--
45
that they might keep his precepts
and
observe his laws.
Praise
the LORD. A [7]
PSALMS: 135
1
Praise the LORD. A
Praise
the name of the LORD;
praise
him, you servants of the LORD,
2
you who minister in the house of the LORD,
in
the courts of the house of our God.
3
Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good;
sing
praise to his name, for that is pleasant.
4
For the LORD has chosen Jacob to be his own,
Israel
to be his treasured possession.
5
I know that the LORD is great,
that
our Lord is greater than all gods.
6
The LORD does whatever pleases him,
in
the heavens and on the earth,
in
the seas and all their depths.
7
He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth;
he
sends lightning with the rain
and
brings out the wind from his storehouses.
8
He struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
the
firstborn of men and animals.
9
He sent his signs and wonders into your midst, O
Egypt,
against
Pharaoh and all his servants.
10
He struck down many nations
and
killed mighty kings--
11
Sihon king of the Amorites,
Og
king of Bashan
and
all the kings of Canaan--
12
and he gave their land as an inheritance,
an
inheritance to his people Israel. [8]
13
Your name, O LORD, endures forever,
your
renown, O LORD, through all generations.
14
For the LORD will vindicate his people
and
have compassion on his servants.
15
The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
made
by the hands of men.
16
They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes,
but they cannot see;
17
they have ears, but cannot hear,
nor
is there breath in their mouths.
18
Those who make them will be like them,
and
so will all who trust in them.
19
O house of Israel, praise the LORD;
O
house of Aaron, praise the LORD;
20
O house of Levi, praise the LORD;
you
who fear him, praise the LORD.
21
Praise be to the LORD from Zion,
to
him who dwells in Jerusalem.
Praise
the LORD. [9]

1 A gentle answer turns
away wrath,
but
a harsh word stirs up anger.
2
The tongue of the wise commends knowledge,
but
the mouth of the fool gushes folly.
3
The eyes of the LORD are everywhere,
keeping
watch on the wicked and the good.
4
The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life,
but
a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.
5
A fool spurns his father's discipline,
but
whoever heeds correction shows prudence.
6
The house of the righteous contains great treasure,
but
the income of the wicked brings them trouble.
7
The lips of the wise spread knowledge;
not
so the hearts of fools.
8
The LORD detests the sacrifice of the wicked,
but
the prayer of the upright pleases him.
9
The LORD detests the way of the wicked
but
he loves those who pursue righteousness.
10
Stern discipline awaits him who leaves the path;
he
who hates correction will die.

Death and Destruction A lie open before the

how

12
A mocker resents correction;
he
will not consult the wise.
13
A happy heart makes the face cheerful,
but
heartache crushes the spirit.
14
The discerning heart seeks knowledge,
but
the mouth of a fool feeds on folly.
15
All the days of the oppressed are wretched,
but
the cheerful heart has a continual feast.
16
Better a little with the fear of the LORD
than
great wealth with turmoil.
17
Better a meal of vegetables where there is love
than
a fattened calf with hatred.
18
A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension,
but
a patient man calms a quarrel.
19
The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns,
but
the path of the upright is a highway.
20
A wise son brings joy to his father,
but
a foolish man despises his mother.
21
Folly delights a man who lacks judgment,
but
a man of understanding keeps a straight course.
22
Plans fail for lack of counsel,
but
with many advisers they succeed. [11]

A man finds joy in giving an apt reply--
and
how good is a timely word!

A greedy man brings trouble to his family,
but
he who hates bribes will live.

but
he hears the prayer of the righteous.

The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, C
OLD TESTAMENT: 2 SAMUEL 22:1 - 23:23
22 1
David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the
LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. 2
He said:
"The LORD is my
rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
3 my
God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn A
of my salvation.
He is my stronghold, my
refuge and my savior--
from violent men you
save me.
4 I
call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise,
and I am saved from my
enemies.
5 "The
waves of death swirled about me;
the torrents of
destruction overwhelmed me.
6 The
cords of the grave B coiled around me;
the snares of death
confronted me.
7 In
my distress I called to the LORD;
I called out to my God.
From his temple he heard
my voice;
my cry came to his ears.
8 "The
earth trembled and quaked,
the foundations of the
heavens C shook;
they trembled because he
was angry.
9 Smoke
rose from his nostrils;
consuming fire came from
his mouth,
burning coals blazed out
of it.
10 He
parted the heavens and came down; [15]
dark clouds were under
his feet.
11 He
mounted the cherubim and flew;
he soared D
on the wings of the wind.
12 He
made darkness his canopy around him--
the dark E
rain clouds of the sky.
13 Out
of the brightness of his presence
bolts of lightning
blazed forth.
14 The
LORD thundered from heaven;
the voice of the Most
High resounded.
15 He
shot arrows and scattered the enemies,
bolts of lightning and
routed them.
16 The
valleys of the sea were exposed
and the foundations of
the earth laid bare
at the rebuke of the
LORD,
at the blast of breath
from his nostrils.
17 "He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
he drew me
out of deep waters.
18 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,
from my
foes, who were too strong for me.
19 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
but the
LORD was my support.
20 He brought me out into a spacious place;
he rescued
me because he delighted in me.
21 "The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
[16]
according
to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD;
I have not
done evil by turning from my God.
23 All his laws are before me;
I have not
turned away from his decrees.
24 I have been blameless before him
and have
kept myself from sin.
25 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according
to my cleanness F in his sight.
26 "To the faithful you show yourself faithful,
to the
blameless you show yourself blameless,
27 to the pure you show yourself pure,
but to the
crooked you show yourself shrewd.
28 You save the humble,
but your
eyes are on the haughty to bring them low.
29 You are my lamp, O LORD;
the LORD
turns my darkness into light.
30 With your help I can advance against a troop
G;
with my
God I can scale a wall.
31 "As for God, his way is perfect;
the word
of the LORD is flawless.
He is a
shield
for all
who take refuge in him.
And who is
the Rock except our God?
33 It is God who arms me with strength H
and makes
my way perfect.
34 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
he enables
me to stand on the heights.
35 He trains my hands for battle;
my arms
can bend a bow of bronze.
36 You give me your shield of victory;
you stoop
down to make me great.
37 You broaden the path beneath me,
so that my
ankles do not turn.
38 "I pursued my enemies and crushed them;
I did not
turn back till they were destroyed.
39 I crushed them completely, and they could not rise;
they fell
beneath my feet.
40 You armed me with strength for battle;
you made
my adversaries bow at my feet.
41 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight,
and I
destroyed my foes.
42 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them--
to the
LORD, but he did not answer.
43 I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth;
I pounded
and trampled them like mud in the streets.
44 "You have delivered me from the attacks of my people;
[18]
you have
preserved me as the head of nations.
People I
did not know are subject to me,
45 and foreigners come cringing to me;
as soon as
they hear me, they obey me.
46 They all lose heart;
they come
trembling I from their
strongholds.
47 "The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock!
Exalted be
God, the Rock, my Savior!
48 He is the God who avenges me,
who puts
the nations under me,
49 who sets me free from my enemies.
You
exalted me above my foes;
from
violent men you rescued me.
50 Therefore I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations;
I will
sing praises to your name.
51 He gives his king great victories;
he shows
unfailing kindness to his anointed,
to David
and his descendants forever."
23 1
These are the last words of David:
"The oracle of
David son of Jesse,
the man anointed by the
God of Jacob,
Israel's singer of songs
A:
2 "The
Spirit of the LORD spoke through me;
his word was on my
tongue.
3 The
God of Israel spoke,
the Rock of Israel said to
me:
`When one
rules over men in righteousness,
when he rules
in the fear of God,
4 he is like the light of morning at sunrise
on a
cloudless morning,
like the
brightness after rain
that brings
the grass from the earth.'
5 "Is not my house right with God?
Has he not
made with me an everlasting covenant,
arranged
and secured in every part?
Will he
not bring to fruition my salvation
and grant
me my every desire?
6 But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns,
which are
not gathered with the hand.
7 Whoever touches thorns
uses a
tool of iron or the shaft of a spear;
they are
burned up where they lie."
8 These
are the names of David's mighty men:
Josheb-Basshebeth, B
a Tahkemonite ,C was chief of the Three; [19]
he oracle of the man exalted
by the Most High, [20]
he raised his spear
against eight hundred men, whom he killed D in one encounter.
9 Next
to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty men, he
was with David when they taunted the Philistines gathered at Pas Dammim E
for battle. Then the men of Israel retreated, 10 but he stood his
ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to
the sword. The LORD brought about a great victory that day. The troops returned
to Eleazar, but only to strip the dead.
11 Next
to him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines banded
together at a place where there was a field full of lentils, Israel's troops
fled from them. 12 But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the
field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the LORD brought
about a great victory.
13 During
harvest time, three of the thirty chief men came down to David at the cave of
Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 14
At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was
at Bethlehem.
15 David longed for water and said,
"Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the
gate of Bethlehem!" 16 So the three mighty men broke through
the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and
carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out
before the LORD.
17 "Far
be it from me, O LORD, to do this!" he said. "Is it not the blood of
men who went at the risk of their lives?" And David would not drink it. [21]Such
were the exploits of the three mighty men.
18Abishai
the brother of Joab son of Zeruiah was chief of the Three. F He
raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as
famous as the Three. 19 Was he not held in greater honor than the
Three? He became their commander, even though he was not included among them.
20 Benaiah
son of Jehoiada was a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, who performed great
exploits. He struck down two of Moab's best men. He also went down into a pit
on a snowy day and killed a lion. 21 And he struck down a huge
Egyptian. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against
him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him
with his own spear. 22 Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of
Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty men.
23 He
was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among
the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard. [22]
NEW TESTAMENT: ACTS 2:1 - 47
2 1
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together
in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind
came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They
saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each
of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to
speak in other tongues A as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now
there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under
heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in
bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly
amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8
Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9
Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and
Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the
parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and
converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of
God in our own tongues!" 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked
one another, "What does this mean?"
13 Some,
however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine. B"
14 Then
Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd:
"Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to
you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These men are not drunk, as
you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was
spoken by the prophet Joel: [23]
17 "`In the last days, God says,
I will
pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons
and daughters will prophesy,
your young
men will see visions,
your old
men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will
pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they
will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heaven above
and signs
on the earth below,
blood and
fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the
moon to blood
before the
coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the
name of the Lord will be saved.' C
22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a
man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did
among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and
foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, D put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But
God raised him from the [24]
dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because
it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25 David
said about him:
"`I saw the Lord
always before me.
Because he is at my right
hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore
my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will live
in hope,
27 because
you will not abandon me to the grave,
nor will you let your
Holy One see decay.
28 You
have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with
joy in your presence.' E
29 "Brothers,
I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and
his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that
God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his
throne.
31 Seeing
what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ,F that he
was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. 32 God
has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33 Exalted
to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy
Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David
did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, [25]
"`The Lord said to my Lord:
"Sit
at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
a
footstool for your feet."' G
36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made
this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
37 When
the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the
other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
38 Peter
replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus
Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all
who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."
40 With
many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save
yourselves from this corrupt generation." 41 Those who accepted
his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number
that day.
42 They
devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe,
and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All
the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling
their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every
day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in
their homes and [26]
ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and
enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily
those who were being saved. [27]
