For
the director of music. To the tune of "The Doe of the Morning."
A psalm of David.
1
My
God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why
are you so far from saving me,
so
far from the words of my groaning?
2
O
my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by
night, and am not silent.
3
Yet
you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you
are the praise of Israel. A
4
In
you our fathers put their trust;
they
trusted and you delivered them.
5
They
cried to you and were saved;
in
you they trusted and were not disappointed.
6
But
I am a worm and not a man,
scorned
by men and despised by the people.
7
All
who see me mock me;
they
hurl insults, shaking their heads:
8
"He
trusts in the LORD;
let
the LORD rescue him.
Let
him deliver him,
since
he delights in him."
9
Yet
you brought me out of the womb;
you
made me trust in you
even
at my mother's breast.
10
From
birth I was cast upon you;
from
my mother's womb you have been my God. 1
11
Do
not be far from me,
for
trouble is near
and
there is no one to help.
12
Many
bulls surround me;
strong
bulls of Bashan encircle me.
13
Roaring
lions tearing their prey
open
their mouths wide against me.
14
I
am poured out like water,
and
all my bones are out of joint.
My
heart has turned to wax;
it
has melted away within me.
15
My
strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and
my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
you
lay me B
in the dust of death.
16
Dogs
have surrounded me;
a
band of evil men has encircled me,
they
have pierced C
my hands and my feet.
17
I
can count all my bones;
people
stare and gloat over me.
18
They
divide my garments among them
and
cast lots for my clothing.
19
But
you, O LORD, be not far off;
O
my Strength, come quickly to help me.
20
Deliver
my life from the sword,
my
precious life from the power of the dogs.
21
Rescue
me from the mouth of the lions;
save
D
me from the horns of the wild oxen.
22
I
will declare your name to my brothers;
in
the congregation I will praise you.
23
You
who fear the LORD, praise him!
All
you descendants of Jacob, honor him! 2
Revere
him, all you descendants of Israel!
24
For
he has not despised or disdained
the
suffering of the afflicted one;
he
has not hidden his face from him
but
has listened to his cry for help.
25
From
you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
before
those who fear you E
will I fulfill my vows.
26
The
poor will eat and be satisfied;
they
who seek the LORD will praise him--
may
your hearts live forever!
27
All
the ends of the earth
will
remember and turn to the LORD,
and
all the families of the nations
will
bow down before him,
28
for
dominion belongs to the LORD
and
he rules over the nations.
29
All
the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
all
who go down to the dust will kneel before him--
those
who cannot keep themselves alive.
30
Posterity
will serve him;
future
generations will be told about the Lord.
31
They
will proclaim his righteousness
to
a people yet unborn--
for
he has done it. 3

For
the director of music. A maskil
A
of David. When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: "David
has gone to the house of Ahimelech."
1
Why
do you boast of evil, you mighty man?
Why
do you boast all day long,
you
who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?
2
Your
tongue plots destruction;
it
is like a sharpened razor,
you
who practice deceit.
3
You
love evil rather than good,
falsehood
rather than speaking the truth.
Selah
4
You
love every harmful word,
O
you deceitful tongue!
5
Surely
God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:
He
will snatch you up and tear you from your tent;
he
will uproot you from the land of the living.
Selah
6
The
righteous will see and fear;
they
will laugh at him, saying,
7
"Here
now is the man
who
did not make God his stronghold
but
trusted in his great wealth
and
grew strong by destroying others!"
8
But
I am like an olive tree
flourishing
in the house of God;
I
trust in God's unfailing love
for
ever and ever.
9
I
will praise you forever for what you have done; 4
in
your name I will hope, for your name is good.
I
will praise you in the presence of your saints. 5
PSALMS:
82
A
psalm of Asaph.
1
God
presides in the great assembly;
he
gives judgment among the "gods":
2
"How
long will you A
defend the unjust
and
show partiality to the wicked?
Selah
3
Defend
the cause of the weak and fatherless;
maintain
the rights of the poor and oppressed.
4
Rescue
the weak and needy;
deliver
them from the hand of the wicked.
5
"They
know nothing, they understand nothing.
They
walk about in darkness;
all
the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6
"I
said,
`You
are "gods";
you
are all sons of the Most High.'
7
But
you will die like mere men;
you
will fall like every other ruler."
8
Rise
up, O God, judge the earth,
for
all the nations are your inheritance.

PSALMS:

1
Praise
A
the LORD. B
Blessed
is the man who fears the LORD,
who
finds great delight in his commands.
2
His
children will be mighty in the land;
the
generation of the upright will be blessed.
3
Wealth
and riches are in his house,
and
his righteousness endures forever.
4
Even
in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for
the gracious and compassionate and righteous man. C
5Good
will come to him who is generous and lends freely,
who
conducts his affairs with justice.
6
Surely
he will never be shaken;
a
righteous man will be remembered forever.
7
He
will have no fear of bad news;
his
heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
8
His
heart is secure, he will have no fear;
in
the end he will look in triumph on his foes.
9
He
has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor,
his
righteousness endures forever;
his
horn D
will be lifted high in honor.
10
The
wicked man will see and be vexed,
he
will gnash his teeth and waste away;
the
longings of the wicked will come to nothing. 7

A
maskil
A
of David. When he was in the cave. A prayer.
1
I
cry aloud to the LORD;
I
lift up my voice to the LORD for mercy.
2
I
pour out my complaint before him;
before
him I tell my trouble.
3
When
my spirit grows faint within me,
it
is you who know my way.
In
the path where I walk
men
have hidden a snare for me.
4
Look
to my right and see;
no
one is concerned for me.
I
have no refuge;
no
one cares for my life.
5
I
cry to you, O LORD;
I
say, "You are my refuge,
my
portion in the land of the living."
6
Listen
to my cry,
for
I am in desperate need;
rescue
me from those who pursue me,
for
they are too strong for me.
7
Set
me free from my prison,
that
I may praise your name.
Then
the righteous will gather about me
because
of your goodness to me. 8
PROVERBS:
22
22
1
A good name is more desirable than great riches;
to
be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
2
Rich
and poor have this in common:
The
LORD is the Maker of them all.
3
A
prudent man sees danger and takes refuge,
but
the simple keep going and suffer for it.
4
Humility
and the fear of the LORD
bring
wealth and honor and life.
5
In
the paths of the wicked lie thorns and snares,
but
he who guards his soul stays far from them.
6
Train
A
a child in the way he should go,
and
when he is old he will not turn from it.
7
The
rich rule over the poor,
and
the borrower is servant to the lender.
8
He
who sows wickedness reaps trouble,
and
the rod of his fury will be destroyed.
9
A
generous man will himself be blessed,
for
he shares his food with the poor.
10
Drive
out the mocker, and out goes strife;
quarrels
and insults are ended.
11
He
who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious
will
have the king for his friend. 9
12
The
eyes of the LORD keep watch over knowledge,
but
he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.
13
The
sluggard says, "There is a lion outside!"
or,
"I will be murdered in the streets!"
14
The
mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit;
he
who is under the LORD's wrath will fall into it.
15
Folly
is bound up in the heart of a child,
but
the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.
16
He
who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth
and
he who gives gifts to the rich--both come to poverty.
17
Pay
attention and listen to the sayings of the wise;
apply
your heart to what I teach,
18
for
it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart
and
have all of them ready on your lips.
19
So
that your trust may be in the LORD,
I
teach you today, even you.
20
Have
I not written thirty B
sayings for you,
sayings
of counsel and knowledge,
21
teaching
you true and reliable words,
so
that you can give sound answers
to
him who sent you?
22
Do
not exploit the poor because they are poor
and
do not crush the needy in court,
23
for
the LORD will take up their case
and
will plunder those who plunder them. 10
24
Do
not make friends with a hot-tempered man,
do
not associate with one easily angered,
25
or
you may learn his ways
and
get yourself ensnared.
26
Do
not be a man who strikes hands in pledge
or
puts up security for debts;
27
if
you lack the means to pay,
your
very bed will be snatched from under you.
28
Do
not move an ancient boundary stone
set
up by your forefathers.
29
Do
you see a man skilled in his work?
He
will serve before kings;
he
will not serve before obscure men. 11
OLD
TESTAMENT:
GENESIS 24:52 - 26:16
52
When
Abraham's servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground
before the LORD. 53
Then
the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of
clothing and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts to her
brother and to her mother. 54
Then
he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night
there.
When
they got up the next morning, he said, "Send me on my way to my
master."
55
But
her brother and her mother replied, "Let the girl remain with us
ten days or so; then you G
may go."
56
But
he said to them, "Do not detain me, now that the LORD has
granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my
master."
57
Then
they said, "Let's call the girl and ask her about it." 58
So
they called Rebekah and asked her, "Will you go with this man?"
"I
will go," she said.
59
So
they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and
Abraham's servant and his men. 60
And
they blessed Rebekah and said to her,
"Our
sister, may you increase
to
thousands upon thousands;
may
your offspring possess
the
gates of their enemies."
61
Then
Rebekah and her maids got ready and mounted their camels and went
back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.
62
Now
Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev.
63
He
went out to the field one evening to meditate, H
and as he looked up, he saw camels aproaching. 64
Rebekah
also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel
65
and
asked the servant, "Who is that man in the field coming to meet
us?"
"He
is my master," the servant answered. So she took her veil and
covered herself.
66
Then
the servant told Isaac all he had done. 67
Isaac
brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married
Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was
comforted after his mother's death.
25
1
Abraham
took A
another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2
She
bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah. 3
Jokshan
was the father of Sheba and Dedan; the descendants of Dedan were the
Asshurites, the Letushites and the Leummites. 4
The
sons of Midian were 12
Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida and Eldaah. All these were descendants of
Keturah.
5
Abraham
left everything he owned to Isaac. 6
But
while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his
concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the
east.
7
Altogether,
Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years. 8
Then
Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man and
full of years; and he was gathered to his people. 9
His
sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near
Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, 10
the
field Abraham had bought from the Hittites. B
There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. 11
After
Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac, who then lived near Beer
Lahai Roi.
12
This
is the account of Abraham's son Ishmael, whom Sarah's maidservant,
Hagar the Egyptian, bore to Abraham.
13
These
are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their
birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14
Mishma,
Dumah, Massa, 15
Hadad,
Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah. 16
These
were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve
tribal rulers according to their settlements and camps. 17
Altogether,
Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last
and died, and he was gathered to his people. 18
His
descendants settled in the area from Havilah to Shur, near the border
of Egypt, as you go toward Asshur. And they lived in hostility toward
C
all their brothers.
19
This
is the account of Abraham's son Isaac.
Abraham
became the father of Isaac, 20
and
Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah daughter of Bethuel
the Aramean from Paddan Aram D
and sister of Laban the Aramean.
21
Isaac
prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The
LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22
The
babies jostled each other within her, and she said, "Why is this
happening to me?" So she went to inquire of the LORD.
23
The
LORD said to her,
"Two
nations are in your womb,
and
two peoples from within you will be separated;
one
people will be stronger than the other,
13
and
the older will serve the younger."
24
When
the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her
womb.
25
The
first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy
garment; so they named him Esau. E
26
After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau's heel;
so he was named Jacob. F
Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.
27
The
boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open
country, while Jacob was a quiet man, staying among the tents. 28
Isaac,
who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29
Once
when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country,
famished. 30
He
said to Jacob, "Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I'm
famished!" (That is why he was also called Edom. G)
31
Jacob
replied, "First sell me your birthright."
32
"Look,
I am about to die," Esau said. "What good is the birthright
to me?"
33
But
Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore an oath to
him, selling his birthright to Jacob.
34
Then
Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank,
and then got up and left.
So
Esau despised his birthright.
26
1
Now
there was a famine in the land--besides the earlier famine of
Abraham's time--and Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines
in Gerar. 2
The
LORD appeared to Isaac and said, "Do
not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live.
3
Stay
in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you.
For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will
confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.
4
I
will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and
will give them all these lands, and through your offspring A
all nations on earth will be blessed,
5
because
Abraham obeyed me and kept my requirements, my commands, my decrees
and my laws."
6
So
Isaac stayed in Gerar.
7
When
the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, "She is
my sister," because he was afraid to say, "She is my wife."
He thought, "The men of this place might kill me on account of
Rebekah, because she is beautiful." 14
8
When
Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines
looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9
So
Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, "She is really your wife! Why
did you say, `She is my sister'?"
Isaac
answered him, "Because I thought I might lose my life on account
of her."
10
Then
Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the
men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought
guilt upon us."
11
So
Abimelech gave orders to all the people: "Anyone who molests
this man or his wife shall surely be put to death."
12
Isaac
planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,
because the LORD blessed him. 13
The
man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became
very wealthy. 14
He
had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied
him. 15
So
all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the time of his
father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth.
16
Then
Abimelech said to Isaac, "Move away from us; you have become too
powerful for us." 15
NEW
TESTAMENT:
MATTHEW 8:18 - 34
18
When
Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other
side of the lake. 19
Then
a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will
follow you wherever you go."
20
Jesus
replied, "Foxes
have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no
place to lay his head."
21
Another
disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my
father."
22
But
Jesus told him, "Follow
me, and let the dead bury their own dead."
23
Then
he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24
Without
warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept
over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25
The
disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going
to drown!"
26
He
replied, "You
of little faith, why are you so afraid?"
Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was
completely calm.
27
The
men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the
winds and the waves obey him!"
28
When
he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, D
two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so
violent that no one could pass that way. 29
"What
do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you
come here to torture us before the appointed time?"
30
Some
distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31
The
demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd
of pigs."
32
He
said to them, "Go!"
So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed
down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33
Those
tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this,
including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34
Then
the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they
pleaded with him to leave their region. 16

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
