Of
David. A psalm.
1
The
earth is the LORD's, and everything in it,
the
world, and all who live in it;
2
for
he founded it upon the seas
and
established it upon the waters.
3
Who
may ascend the hill of the LORD?
Who
may stand in his holy place?
4
He
who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who
does not lift up his soul to an idol
or
swear by what is false. A
5
He
will receive blessing from the LORD
and
vindication from God his Savior.
6
Such
is the generation of those who seek him,
who
seek your face, O God of Jacob. B
Selah
7
Lift
up your heads, O you gates;
be
lifted up, you ancient doors,
that
the King of glory may come in.
8
Who
is this King of glory?
The
LORD strong and mighty,
the
LORD mighty in battle.
9
Lift
up your heads, O you gates;
lift
them up, you ancient doors,
that
the King of glory may come in.
10
Who
is he, this King of glory?
The
LORD Almighty--
he
is the King of glory. 1

For
the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil
A
of David. When the Ziphites had gone to Saul and said, "Is not
David hiding among us?"
1
Save
me, O God, by your name;
vindicate
me by your might.
2
Hear
my prayer, O God;
listen
to the words of my mouth.
3
Strangers
are attacking me;
ruthless
men seek my life--
men
without regard for God.
Selah
4
Surely
God is my help;
the
Lord is the one who sustains me.
5
Let
evil recoil on those who slander me;
in
your faithfulness destroy them.
6
I
will sacrifice a freewill offering to you;
I
will praise your name, O LORD,
for
it is good.
7
For
he has delivered me from all my troubles,
and
my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes. 3

For
the director of music. According to gittith.
A
Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.
1
How
lovely is your dwelling place,
O
LORD Almighty!
2
My
soul yearns, even faints,
for
the courts of the LORD;
my
heart and my flesh cry out
for
the living God.
3
Even
the sparrow has found a home,
and
the swallow a nest for herself,
where
she may have her young--
a
place near your altar,
O
LORD Almighty, my King and my God.
4
Blessed
are those who dwell in your house;
they
are ever praising you.
Selah
5
Blessed
are those whose strength is in you,
who
have set their hearts on pilgrimage.
6
As
they pass through the Valley of Baca,
they
make it a place of springs;
the
autumn rains also cover it with pools. B
7
They
go from strength to strength,
till
each appears before God in Zion.
8
Hear
my prayer, O LORD God Almighty;
listen
to me, O God of Jacob.
Selah
9
Look
upon our shield, C
O God;
look
with favor on your anointed one. 4
10
Better
is one day in your courts
than
a thousand elsewhere;
I
would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than
dwell in the tents of the wicked.
11
For
the LORD God is a sun and shield;
the
LORD bestows favor and honor;
no
good thing does he withhold
from
those whose walk is blameless.
12
O
LORD Almighty,
blessed
is the man who trusts in you. 5
PSALMS:

1
When
Israel came out of Egypt,
the
house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue,
2
Judah
became God's sanctuary,
Israel
his dominion.
3
The
sea looked and fled,
the
Jordan turned back;
4
the
mountains skipped like rams,
the
hills like lambs.
5
Why
was it, O sea, that you fled,
O
Jordan, that you turned back,
6
you
mountains, that you skipped like rams,
you
hills, like lambs?
7
Tremble,
O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at
the presence of the God of Jacob,
8
who
turned the rock into a pool,
the
hard rock into springs of water. 6
PSALMS:
144
Of
David.
1
Praise
be to the LORD my Rock,
who
trains my hands for war,
my
fingers for battle.
2
He
is my loving God and my fortress,
my
stronghold and my deliverer,
my
shield, in whom I take refuge,
who
subdues peoples A
under me.
3
O
LORD, what is man that you care for him,
the
son of man that you think of him?
4
Man
is like a breath;
his
days are like a fleeting shadow.
5
Part
your heavens, O LORD, and come down;
touch
the mountains, so that they smoke.
6
Send
forth lightning and scatter the enemies;
shoot
your arrows and rout them.
7
Reach
down your hand from on high;
deliver
me and rescue me
from
the mighty waters,
from
the hands of foreigners
8
whose
mouths are full of lies,
whose
right hands are deceitful.
9
I
will sing a new song to you, O God;
on
the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you,
10
to
the One who gives victory to kings,
who
delivers his servant David from the deadly sword. 7
11
Deliver
me and rescue me
from
the hands of foreigners
whose
mouths are full of lies,
whose
right hands are deceitful.
12
Then
our sons in their youth
will
be like well-nurtured plants,
and
our daughters will be like pillars
carved
to adorn a palace.
13
Our
barns will be filled
with
every kind of provision.
Our
sheep will increase by thousands,
by
tens of thousands in our fields;
14
our
oxen will draw heavy loads. B
There
will be no breaching of walls,
no
going into captivity,
no
cry of distress in our streets.
15
Blessed
are the people of whom this is true;
blessed
are the people whose God is the LORD. 8
PROVERBS:
24
24
1
Do not envy wicked men,
do
not desire their company;
2
for
their hearts plot violence,
and
their lips talk about making trouble.
3
By
wisdom a house is built,
and
through understanding it is established;
4
through
knowledge its rooms are filled
with
rare and beautiful treasures.
5
A
wise man has great power,
and
a man of knowledge increases strength;
6
for
waging war you need guidance,
and
for victory many advisers.
7
Wisdom
is too high for a fool;
in
the assembly at the gate he has nothing to say.
8
He
who plots evil
will
be known as a schemer.
9
The
schemes of folly are sin,
and
men detest a mocker.
10
If
you falter in times of trouble,
how
small is your strength!
11
Rescue
those being led away to death;
hold
back those staggering toward slaughter.
12
If
you say, "But we knew nothing about this,"
does
not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does
not he who guards your life know it?
Will
he not repay each person according to what he has done? 9
13
Eat
honey, my son, for it is good;
honey
from the comb is sweet to your taste.
14
Know
also that wisdom is sweet to your soul;
if
you find it, there is a future hope for you,
and
your hope will not be cut off.
15
Do
not lie in wait like an outlaw against a righteous man's house,
do
not raid his dwelling place;
16
for
though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again,
but
the wicked are brought down by calamity.
17
Do
not gloat when your enemy falls;
when
he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice,
18
or
the LORD will see and disapprove
and
turn his wrath away from him.
19
Do
not fret because of evil men
or
be envious of the wicked,
20
for
the evil man has no future hope,
and
the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.
21
Fear
the LORD and the king, my son,
and
do not join with the rebellious,
22
for
those two will send sudden destruction upon them,
and
who knows what calamities they can bring?
23
These
also are sayings of the wise:
To
show partiality in judging is not good:
24
Whoever
says to the guilty, "You are innocent"--
peoples
will curse him and nations denounce him.
25
But
it will go well with those who convict the guilty,
and
rich blessing will come upon them. 10
26
An
honest answer
is
like a kiss on the lips.
27
Finish
your outdoor work
and
get your fields ready;
after
that, build your house.
28
Do
not testify against your neighbor without cause,
or
use your lips to deceive.
29
Do
not say, "I'll do to him as he has done to me;
I'll
pay that man back for what he did."
30
I
went past the field of the sluggard,
past
the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment;
31
thorns
had come up everywhere,
the
ground was covered with weeds,
and
the stone wall was in ruins.
32
I
applied my heart to what I observed
and
learned a lesson from what I saw:
33
A
little sleep, a little slumber,
a
little folding of the hands to rest--
34
and
poverty will come on you like a bandit
OLD
TESTAMENT:
GENESIS 26:17 - 27:46
17
So
Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and
settled there. 18
Isaac
reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father
Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and
he gave them the same names his father had given them.
19
Isaac's
servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water
there.
20
But
the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen and said, "The
water is ours!" So he named the well Esek, B
because they disputed with him. 21
Then
they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he
named it Sitnah. C
22
He
moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over
it. He named it Rehoboth, D
saying, "Now the LORD has given us room and we will flourish in
the land."
23
From
there he went up to Beersheba. 24
That
night the LORD appeared to him and said, "I
am the God of your father Abraham.
Do
not be afraid, for I am with you;
I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for
the sake of my servant Abraham."
25
Isaac
built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD. There he
pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.
26
Meanwhile,
Abimelech had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal
adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces. 27
Isaac
asked them, "Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to
me and sent me away?"
28
They
answered, "We saw clearly that the LORD was with you; so we
said, `There ought to be a sworn agreement between us'--between us
and you. Let us make a treaty with you 29
that
you will do us no harm, just as we did not molest you but always
treated you well and sent you away in peace. And now you are blessed
by the LORD."
30
Isaac
then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank. 31
Early
the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent
them on their way, and they left him in peace.
32
That
day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well they had dug.
They said, "We've found water!" 33
He
called it Shibah, E
and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba. F
34
When
Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the
Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35
They
were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.
27
1
When
Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see,
he called for Esau his older son and said to him, "My son."
"Here
I am," he answered. 12
2
Isaac
said, "I am now an old man and don't know the day of my death. 3
Now
then, get your weapons--your quiver and bow--and go out to the open
country to hunt some wild game for me. 4
Prepare
me the kind of tasty food I like and bring it to me to eat, so that I
may give you my blessing before I die."
5
Now
Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left
for the open country to hunt game and bring it back, 6
Rebekah
said to her son Jacob, "Look, I overheard your father say to
your brother Esau, 7
`Bring
me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may
give you my blessing in the presence of the LORD before I die.' 8
Now,
my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you: 9
Go
out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so I can
prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it. 10
Then
take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing
before he dies."
11
Jacob
said to Rebekah his mother, "But my brother Esau is a hairy man,
and I'm a man with smooth skin. 12
What
if my father touches me? I would appear to be tricking him and would
bring down a curse on myself rather than a blessing."
13
His
mother said to him, "My son, let the curse fall on me. Just do
what I say; go and get them for me."
14
So
he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared
some tasty food, just the way his father liked it. 15
Then
Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in
the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob.
16
She
also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the
goatskins.
17
Then
she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had
made.
18
He
went to his father and said, "My father."
"Yes,
my son," he answered. "Who is it?"
19
Jacob
said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as
you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game so that you may
give me your blessing."
20
Isaac
asked his son, "How did you find it so quickly, my son?"
"The
LORD your God gave me success," he replied.
21
Then
Isaac said to Jacob, "Come near so I can touch you, my son, to
know whether you really are my son Esau or not."
22
Jacob
went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, "The
voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau."
23
He
did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his
brother Esau; so he blessed him. 24
"Are
you really my son Esau?" he asked.
"I
am," he replied.
25
Then
he said, "My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I
may give you my blessing." 13
Jacob
brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank.
26
Then
his father Isaac said to him, "Come here, my son, and kiss me."
27
So
he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his
clothes, he blessed him and said,
"Ah,
the smell of my son
is
like the smell of a field
that
the LORD has blessed. 28
May
God give you of heaven's dew
and
of earth's richness--
an
abundance of grain and new wine. 29
May
nations serve you
and
peoples bow down to you.
Be
lord over your brothers,
and
may the sons of your mother bow down to you.
May
those who curse you be cursed
and
those who bless you be blessed."
30
After
Isaac finished blessing him and Jacob had scarcely left his father's
presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31
He
too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he
said to him, "My father, sit up and eat some of my game, so that
you may give me your blessing."
32
His
father Isaac asked him, "Who are you?"
"I
am your son," he answered, "your firstborn, Esau."
33
Isaac
trembled violently and said, "Who was it, then, that hunted game
and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed
him--and indeed he will be blessed!"
34
When
Esau heard his father's words, he burst out with a loud and bitter
cry and said to his father, "Bless me--me too, my father!"
35
But
he said, "Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing."
36
Esau
said, "Isn't he rightly named Jacob
A?
He has deceived me these two times: He took my birthright, and now
he's taken my blessing!" Then he asked, "Haven't you
reserved any blessing for me?" 14
37
Isaac
answered Esau, "I have made him lord over you and have made all
his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and
new wine. So what can I possibly do for you, my son?"
38
Esau
said to his father, "Do you have only one blessing, my father?
Bless me too, my father!" Then Esau wept aloud.
39
His
father Isaac answered him,
"Your
dwelling will be
away
from the earth's richness,
away
from the dew of heaven above. 40
You
will live by the sword
and
you will serve your brother.
But
when you grow restless,
you
will throw his yoke
from
off your neck."
41
Esau
held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had
given him. He said to himself, "The days of mourning for my
father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob."
42
When
Rebekah was told what her older son Esau had said, she sent for her
younger son Jacob and said to him, "Your brother Esau is
consoling himself with the thought of killing you. 43
Now
then, my son, do what I say: Flee at once to my brother Laban in
Haran. 44
Stay
with him for a while until your brother's fury subsides. 45
When
your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to
him, I'll send word for you to come back from there. Why should I
lose both of you in one day?"
46
Then
Rebekah said to Isaac, "I'm disgusted with living because of
these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of
this land, from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth
living." 15
NEW
TESTAMENT:
MATTHEW 9:1 - 17
9
1
Jesus
stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2
Some
men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their
faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take
heart, son; your sins are forgiven."
3
At
this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves,
"This
fellow is blaspheming!"
4
Knowing
their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why
do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?
5
Which
is easier:
to say,
`Your
sins are forgiven,'
or to say,
`Get
up and walk'?
6
But
so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to
forgive sins...."
Then he said to the paralytic, "Get
up, take your mat and go home."
7
And
the man got up and went home. 8
When
the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God,
who had given such authority to men.
9
As
Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the
tax collector's booth. "Follow
me,"
he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10
While
Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and
"sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. 11
When
the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your
teacher eat with tax collectors and `sinners'?"
12
On
hearing this, Jesus said, "It
is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
13
But
go and learn what this means:
`I
desire mercy, not sacrifice.'
A
For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
14
Then
John's disciples came and asked him, "How is it that we and the
Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?"
15
Jesus
answered, "How
can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?
The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;
then they will fast.
16
"No
one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch
will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.
17
Neither
do men pour new wine into old wineskins.
If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the
wineskins will be ruined.
No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
