Of
David.
1
Vindicate
me, O LORD,
for
I have led a blameless life;
I
have trusted in the LORD
without
wavering.
2
Test
me, O LORD, and try me,
examine
my heart and my mind;
3
for
your love is ever before me,
and
I walk continually in your truth.
4
I
do not sit with deceitful men,
nor
do I consort with hypocrites;
5
I
abhor the assembly of evildoers
and
refuse to sit with the wicked.
6
I
wash my hands in innocence,
and
go about your altar, O LORD,
7
proclaiming
aloud your praise
and
telling of all your wonderful deeds.
8
I
love the house where you live, O LORD,
the
place where your glory dwells.
9
Do
not take away my soul along with sinners,
my
life with bloodthirsty men,
10
in
whose hands are wicked schemes,
whose
right hands are full of bribes.
11
But
I lead a blameless life;
redeem
me and be merciful to me.
12
My
feet stand on level ground;
in
the great assembly I will praise the LORD. 1

For
the director of music. To the tune of "A Dove on Distant Oaks."
Of David. A miktam.
A
When the Philistines had seized him in Gath.
1
Be
merciful to me, O God, for men hotly pursue me;
all
day long they press their attack.
2
My
slanderers pursue me all day long;
many
are attacking me in their pride.
3
When
I am afraid,
I
will trust in you.
4
In
God, whose word I praise,
in
God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What
can mortal man do to me?
5
All
day long they twist my words;
they
are always plotting to harm me.
6
They
conspire, they lurk,
they
watch my steps,
eager
to take my life.
7
On
no account let them escape;
in
your anger, O God, bring down the nations.
8
Record
my lament;
list
my tears on your scroll B--
are
they not in your record?
9
Then
my enemies will turn back
when
I call for help.
By
this I will know that God is for me.
10
In
God, whose word I praise,
in
the LORD, whose word I praise--
11
in
God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What
can man do to me? 2
12
I
am under vows to you, O God;
I
will present my thank offerings to you.
13
For
you have delivered me C
from death
and
my feet from stumbling,
that
I may walk before God
PSALMS:

A
prayer of David.
1
Hear,
O LORD, and answer me,
for
I am poor and needy.
2
Guard
my life, for I am devoted to you.
You
are my God; save your servant
who
trusts in you.
3
Have
mercy on me, O Lord,
for
I call to you all day long.
4
Bring
joy to your servant,
for
to you, O Lord,
I
lift up my soul.
5
You
are forgiving and good, O Lord,
abounding
in love to all who call to you.
6
Hear
my prayer, O LORD;
listen
to my cry for mercy.
7
In
the day of my trouble I will call to you,
for
you will answer me.
8
Among
the gods there is none like you, O Lord;
no
deeds can compare with yours.
9
All
the nations you have made
will
come and worship before you, O Lord;
they
will bring glory to your name.
10
For
you are great and do marvelous deeds;
you
alone are God. 4
11
Teach
me your way, O LORD,
and
I will walk in your truth;
give
me an undivided heart,
that
I may fear your name.
12
I
will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart;
I
will glorify your name forever.
13
For
great is your love toward me;
you
have delivered me from the depths of the grave. A
14
The
arrogant are attacking me, O God;
a
band of ruthless men seeks my life--
men
without regard for you.
15
But
you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,
slow
to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
16
Turn
to me and have mercy on me;
grant
your strength to your servant
and
save the son of your maidservant. B
17
Give
me a sign of your goodness,
that
my enemies may see it and be put to shame,
for
you, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me. 5
PSALMS:
116
1
I
love the LORD, for he heard my voice;
he
heard my cry for mercy.
2
Because
he turned his ear to me,
I
will call on him as long as I live.
the
anguish of the grave A
came upon me;
I
was overcome by trouble and sorrow.
4
Then
I called on the name of the LORD:
"O
LORD, save me!"
5
The
LORD is gracious and righteous;
our
God is full of compassion.
6
The
LORD protects the simplehearted;
when
I was in great need, he saved me.
7
Be
at rest once more, O my soul,
for
the LORD has been good to you.
8
For
you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death,
my
eyes from tears,
my
feet from stumbling,
9
that
I may walk before the LORD
in
the land of the living.
10
I
believed; therefore B
I said,
"I
am greatly afflicted."
11
And
in my dismay I said,
"All
men are liars."
12
How
can I repay the LORD
for
all his goodness to me?
13
I
will lift up the cup of salvation
and
call on the name of the LORD.
14
I
will fulfill my vows to the LORD
in
the presence of all his people. 6
15
Precious
in the sight of the LORD
is
the death of his saints.
16
O
LORD, truly I am your servant;
I
am your servant, the son of your maidservant C;
you
have freed me from my chains.
17
I
will sacrifice a thank offering to you
and
call on the name of the LORD.
18
I
will fulfill my vows to the LORD
in
the presence of all his people,
19
in
the courts of the house of the LORD--
in
your midst, O Jerusalem.
PSALMS:

1
Praise
the LORD. A
Praise
the LORD, O my soul.
2
I
will praise the LORD all my life;
I
will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
3
Do
not put your trust in princes,
in
mortal men, who cannot save.
4
When
their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on
that very day their plans come to nothing.
5
Blessed
is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose
hope is in the LORD his God,
6the
Maker of heaven and earth,
the
sea, and everything in them--
the
LORD, who remains faithful forever.
7
He
upholds the cause of the oppressed
and
gives food to the hungry.
The
LORD sets prisoners free,
8
the
LORD gives sight to the blind,
the
LORD lifts up those who are bowed down,
the
LORD loves the righteous.
9
The
LORD watches over the alien
and
sustains the fatherless and the widow,
but
he frustrates the ways of the wicked.
10
The
LORD reigns forever,
your
God, O Zion, for all generations.
Praise
the LORD. 8

OLD
TESTAMENT:
GENESIS 31:17 - 32:12
17
Then
Jacob put his children and his wives on camels, 18
and
he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he
had accumulated in Paddan Aram, A
to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.
19
When
Laban had gone to shear his sheep, Rachel stole her father's
household gods. 20
Moreover,
Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him he was running
away. 21
So
he fled with all he had, and crossing the River, B
he headed for the hill country of Gilead.
22
On
the third day Laban was told that Jacob had fled. 23
Taking
his relatives with him, he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up
with him in the hill country of Gilead. 24
Then
God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him,
"Be
careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad."
25
Jacob
had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead when Laban
overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too. 26
Then
Laban said to Jacob, "What have you done? You've deceived me,
and you've carried off my daughters like captives in war. 27
Why
did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn't you tell me, so I
could send you away with joy and singing to the music of tambourines
and harps? 28
You
didn't even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters good-by.
You have done a foolish thing. 29
I
have the power to harm you; but last night the God of your father
said to me, `Be
careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.'
30
Now
you have gone off because you longed to return to your father's
house. But why did you steal my gods?"
31
Jacob
answered Laban, "I was afraid, because I thought you would take
your daughters away from me by force. 32
But
if you find anyone who has your gods, he shall not live. In the
presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything
of yours here with me; and if so, take it." Now Jacob did not
know that Rachel had stolen the gods.
33
So
Laban went into Jacob's tent and into Leah's tent and into the tent
of the two maidservants, but he found nothing. After he came out of
Leah's tent, he entered Rachel's tent. 34
Now
Rachel had taken the household gods and put them inside her camel's
saddle and was sitting on them. Laban searched through everything in
the tent but found nothing.
35
Rachel
said to her father, "Don't be angry, my lord, that I cannot
stand up in your presence; I'm having my period." So he searched
but could not find the household gods.
36
Jacob
was angry and took Laban to task. "What is my crime?" he
asked Laban. "What sin have I committed that you hunt me down?
37
Now
that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that
belongs to your household? Put it here in front of your relatives and
mine, and let them judge between the two of us.
38
"I
have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have
not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. 39
I
did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss
myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen by
day or night. 12
40
This
was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at
night, and sleep fled from my eyes. 41
It
was like this for the twenty years I was in your household. I worked
for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your
flocks, and you changed my wages ten times. 42
If
the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had
not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed.
But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands, and last night
he rebuked you."
43
Laban
answered Jacob, "The women are my daughters, the children are my
children, and the flocks are my flocks. All you see is mine. Yet what
can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children
they have borne? 44
Come
now, let's make a covenant, you and I, and let it serve as a witness
between us."
45
So
Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar. 46
He
said to his relatives, "Gather some stones." So they took
stones and piled them in a heap, and they ate there by the heap. 47
Laban
called it Jegar Sahadutha, C
and Jacob called it Galeed. D
48
Laban
said, "This heap is a witness between you and me today."
That is why it was called Galeed. 49
It
was also called Mizpah, E
because he said, "May the LORD keep watch between you and me
when we are away from each other. 50
If
you mistreat my daughters or if you take any wives besides my
daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a
witness between you and me."
51
Laban
also said to Jacob, "Here is this heap, and here is this pillar
I have set up between you and me. 52
This
heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not go
past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past
this heap and pillar to my side to harm me. 53
May
the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father,
judge between us."
So
Jacob took an oath in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac. 54
He
offered a sacrifice there in the hill country and invited his
relatives to a meal. After they had eaten, they spent the night
there.
55
Early
the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters and
blessed them. Then he left and returned home.
32
1
Jacob
also went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2
When
Jacob saw them, he said, "This is the camp of God!" So he
named that place Mahanaim. A
3
Jacob
sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir,
the country of Edom. 4
He
instructed them: "This is what you are to say to my master Esau:
`Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have
remained there till now. 5
I
have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, menservants and
maidservants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may
find favor in your eyes.'"
6
When
the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, "We went to your
brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men
13
are with him."
7
In
great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him
into two groups, B
and the flocks and herds and camels as well. 8
He
thought, "If Esau comes and attacks one group, C
the group D
that is left may escape."
9
Then
Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham, God of my father
Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, `Go back to your country and your
relatives, and I will make you prosper,' 10
I
am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your
servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I
have become two groups. 11
Save
me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will
come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children. 12
But
you have said, `I
will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the
sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'"

TESTAMENT:
MATTHEW 10:24 - 11:6
24
"A
student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.
25
It
is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant
like his master.
If
the head of the house has been called Beelzebub,
C
how much more the members of his household!
26
"So
do not be afraid of them.
There
is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will
not be made known.
27
What
I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in
your ear, proclaim from the roofs.
28
Do
not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.
Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in
hell.
29
Are
not two sparrows sold for a penny D?
Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of
your Father.
30
And
even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31
So
don't be afraid;
you are worth more than many sparrows.
32
"Whoever
acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my
Father in heaven.
33
But
whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in
heaven.
34
"Do
not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth.
I
did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35
For
I have come to turn
"`a
man against his father,
a
daughter against her mother,
a
daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law--
36
a
man's enemies will be the members of his own household.'
E
37
"Anyone
who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me;
anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of
me;
38
and
anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39
Whoever
finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake
will find it.
40
"He
who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one
who sent me.
41
Anyone
who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a
prophet's reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he
is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward.
42
And
if anyone gives even a cup of cold water
to
one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the
truth, he will certainly not lose his reward."

1
After
Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from
there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee. A
2
When
John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples 3
to
ask him, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect
someone else?"
4
Jesus
replied, "Go
back and report to John what you hear and see:
5
The
blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy B
are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is
preached to the poor.
6
Blessed
is the man who does not fall away on account of me."

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
