Genesis 1:1 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

JANUARY 22

PSALMS: 22, 52, 82, 112, 142

PROVERBS: 22

OLD TESTAMENT: JOSHUA 7:16 - 9:2

NEW TESTAMENT: LUKE 16:1 - 18

PSALMS: 22

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Why are you so far from helping me,

and from the words of my groaning?

2 My God, I cry in the daytime, but you don't answer;

In the night season, and am not silent.

3 But you are holy,

You who inhabit the praises of Yisra'el.

4 Our fathers trusted in you.

They trusted, and you delivered them.

5 They cried to you, and were delivered.

They trusted in you, and were not put to shame.

6 But I am a worm, and no man;

A reproach of men, and despised by the people.

7 All those who see me mock me.

They insult me with their lips.

They shake their heads, saying,

8 "He trusts in the LORD; Let him deliver him;

Let him rescue him, since he delights in him."

9 But you brought me out of the womb.

You made me trust at my mother's breasts.

10 I was thrown on you from my mother's womb.

You are my God since my mother bore me.

11 Don't be far from me, for trouble is near.

For there is none to help.

12 Many bulls have surrounded me.

Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me.

13 They open their mouths wide against me,

Lions tearing prey and roaring.

14 I am poured out like water.

All my bones are out of joint.

My heart is like wax;

It is melted within me.

15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd.

My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.

You have brought me into the dust of death.

16 For dogs have surrounded me.

A company of evil-doers have enclosed me.

They pierced my hands and my feet.

17 I can count all of my bones.

They look and stare at me.

18 They divide my garments among them.

They cast lots for my clothing.

19 But don't be far off, LORD.

You are my help: hurry to help me.

20 Deliver my soul from the sword,

My precious life from the power of the dog.

21 Save me from the lion's mouth;

Yes, from the horns of the wild oxen you have answered me.

22 I will declare your name to my brothers.

In the midst of the assembly, will I praise you.

23 You who fear the LORD, praise him!

All you descendants of Ya`akov, glorify him!

Stand in awe of him, all you descendants of Yisra'el!

24 For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted,

Neither has he hid his face from him;

But when he cried to him, he heard.

25 Of you comes my praise in the great assembly.

I will pay my vows before those who fear him.

26 The humble shall eat and be satisfied.

They shall praise the LORD who seek after him.

Let your hearts live forever.

27 All the ends of the eretz shall remember and turn to the LORD.

All the relatives of the nations shall worship before you.

28 For the kingdom is the LORD's.

He is the ruler over the nations.

29 All the rich ones of the eretz shall eat and worship.

All those who go down to the dust shall bow before him,

Even he who can't keep his soul alive.

30 Posterity shall serve him.

Future generations shall be told about the Lord.

31 They shall come and shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, For he has done it.

PSALMS: 52

1 Why do you boast of mischief, mighty man?

God's loving kindness endures continually.

2 Your tongue plots destruction,

Like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

3 You love evil more than good,

Lying rather than speaking the truth.

Selah.

4 You love all devouring words,

You deceitful tongue.

5 God will likewise destroy you forever.

He will take you up, and pluck you out of your tent,

And root you out of the land of the living.

Selah.

6 The righteous also will see it, and fear,

And laugh at him, saying,

7 "Behold, this is the man who didn't make God his strength,

But trusted in the abundance of his riches,

And strengthened himself in his wickedness."

8 But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in God's house.

I trust in God's loving kindness forever and ever.

9 I will give you thanks forever, because you have done it.

I will hope in your name, for it is good,

In the presence of your holy ones.

PSALMS: 82

1 God presides in the great assembly.

He judges among the gods.

2 "How long will you judge unjustly,

And show partiality to the wicked?"

Selah.

3 "Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless.

Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.

4 Rescue the weak and needy.

Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked."

5 They don't know, neither do they understand.

They walk back and forth in darkness.

All the foundations of the eretz are shaken.

6 I said, "You are gods,

All of you are sons of Ha`Elyon.

7 Nevertheless you shall die like men,

And fall like one of the rulers."

8 Arise, God, judge the eretz,

For you inherit all of the nations.

PSALMS: 112

1 Praise the LORD!

Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,

Who delights greatly in his mitzvot.

2 His seed will be mighty on eretz.

The generation of the upright will be blessed.

3 Wealth and riches are in his house.

His righteousness endures forever.

4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright,

Gracious, merciful, and righteous.

5 It is well with the man who deals graciously and lends.

He will maintain his cause in judgment.

6 For he will never be shaken.

The righteous will be remembered forever.

7 He will not be afraid of evil news.

His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

8 His heart is established.

He will not be afraid in the end when he sees his adversaries.

9 He has dispersed, he has given to the poor.

His righteousness endures forever.

His horn will be exalted with honor.

10 The wicked will see it, and be grieved.

He shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away.

The desire of the wicked will perish.

PSALMS: 142

1 I cry with my voice to the LORD.

With my voice, I ask the LORD for mercy.

2 I pour out my complaint before him.

I tell him my troubles.

3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me,

You knew my path.

In the way in which I walk,

They have hidden a snare for me.

4 Look on my right, and see;

For there is no one who is concerned for me.

Refuge has fled from me.

No one cares for my soul.

5 I cried to you, the LORD.

I said, "You are my refuge,

My portion in the land of the living."

6 Listen to my cry,

For I am in desperate need.

Deliver me from my persecutors,

For they are stronger than me.

7 Bring my soul out of prison,

That I may give thanks to your name.

The righteous will surround me,

For you will be good to me.

PROVERBS: 22

1 A good name is more desirable than great riches;

Loving favor rather than silver and gold.

2 The rich and the poor have this in common:

The LORD is the maker of them all.

3 A prudent man sees danger, and hides himself;

But the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

4 The result of humility and the fear of the LORD

Is wealth, honor, and life.

5 Thorns and snares are in the path of the wicked:

Whoever guards his soul stays from them.

6 Train up a child in the way he should go,

And when he is old he will not depart from it.

7 The rich rules over the poor.

The borrower is servant to the lender.

8 He who sows wickedness reaps trouble,

And the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

9 He who has a generous eye will be blessed;

For he shares his food with the poor.

10 Drive out the mocker, and strife will go out;

Yes, quarrels and insults will stop.

11 He who loves purity of heart and speaks gracefully Is the king's friend.

12 The eyes of the LORD watch over knowledge;

But he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.

13 The sluggard says,

"There is a lion outside!

I will be killed in the streets!"

14 The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit:

He who is under the LORD's wrath will fall into it.

15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child:

The rod of discipline drives it far from him.

16 Whoever oppresses the poor for his own increase and whoever gives to the rich,

Both come to poverty.

17 Turn your ear, and listen to the words of the wise.

Apply your heart to my teaching.

18 For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you,

If all of them are ready on your lips.

19 That your trust may be in the LORD,

I teach you today, even you.

20 Haven't I written to you thirty excellent things

Of counsel and knowledge,

21 To teach you truth, reliable words,

To give sound answers to the ones who sent you?

22 Don't exploit the poor, because he is poor;

And don't crush the needy in court;

23 For the LORD will plead their case,

And plunder the life of those who plunder them.

24 Don't befriend a hot-tempered man,

And don't associate with one who harbors anger:

25 Lest you learn his ways,

And ensnare your soul.

26 Don't you be one of those who strike hands,

Of those who are collateral for debts.

27 If you don't have means to pay,

Why should he take away your bed from under you?

28 Don't move the ancient boundary stone,

Which your fathers have set up.

29 Do you see a man skilled in his work?

He will serve kings;

He won't serve obscure men.

OLD TESTAMENT: JOSHUA 7:16 - 9:2

7:16 So Yehoshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Yisra'el near by their tribes; and the tribe of Yehudah was taken: 17 and he brought near the family of Yehudah; and he took the family of the Zarchi: and he brought near the family of the Zarchi man by man; and Zavdi was taken: 18 and he brought near his household man by man; and `Akhan, the son of Karmi, the son of Zavdi, the son of Zerach, of the tribe of Yehudah, was taken. 19 Yehoshua said to `Akhan, My son, please give glory to the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, and make confession to him; and tell me now what you have done; don't hide it from me. 20 `Akhan answered Yehoshua, and said, Of a truth I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, and thus and thus have I done: 21 when I saw among the spoil a goodly mantle of Shin`ar, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the eretz in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it. 22 So Yehoshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it. 23 They took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them to Yehoshua, and to all the children of Yisra'el; and they laid them down before the LORD. 24 Yehoshua, and all Yisra'el with him, took `Akhan the son of Zerach, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his donkeys, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them up to the valley of `Akhor. 25 Yehoshua said, Why have you troubled us? the LORD shall trouble you this day. All Yisra'el stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones. 26 They raised over him a great heap of stones, to this day; and the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called "The valley of `Akhor" to this day.

8:1 The LORD said to Yehoshua, Don't be afraid, neither be dismayed: take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to `Ai; behold, I have given into your hand the king of `Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land; 2 You shall do to `Ai and her king as you did to Yericho and her king: only the spoil of it, and the cattle of it, shall you take for a prey to yourselves: set you an ambush for the city behind it. 3 So Yehoshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up to `Ai: and Yehoshua chose out thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them forth by night. 4 He commanded them, saying, Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city; don't go very far from the city, but be all ready: 5 and I, and all the people who are with me, will approach to the city. It shall happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them; 6 and they will come out after us, until we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: so we will flee before them; 7 and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand. 8 It shall be, when you have seized on the city, that you shall set the city on fire; according to the word of the LORD shall you do: behold, I have commanded you. 9 Yehoshua sent them forth; and they went to set up the ambush, and stayed between Beit-El and `Ai, on the west side of `Ai: but Yehoshua lodged that night among the people. 10 Yehoshua arose up early in the morning, and mustered the people, and went up, he and the Zakenim of Yisra'el, before the people to `Ai. 11 All the people, [even] the [men of] war who were with him, went up, and drew near, and came before the city, and encamped on the north side of `Ai: now there was a valley between him and `Ai. 12 He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Beit-El and `Ai, on the west side of the city. 13 So they set the people, even all the host who was on the north of the city, and their liers-in-wait who were on the west of the city; and Yehoshua went that night into the midst of the valley. 14 It happened, when the king of `Ai saw it, that they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Yisra'el to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the `Aravah; but he didn't know that there was an ambush against him behind the city. 15 Yehoshua and all Yisra'el made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness. 16 All the people who were in the city were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Yehoshua, and were drawn away from the city. 17  There was not a man left in `Ai or Beit-El, who didn't go out after Yisra'el: and they left the city open, and pursued after Yisra'el. 18 The LORD said to Yehoshua, Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward `Ai; for I will give it into your hand. Yehoshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city. 19 The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into the city, and took it; and they hurried and set the city on fire. 20 When the men of `Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers. 21 When Yehoshua and all Yisra'el saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and killed the men of `Ai. 22 The others came forth out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Yisra'el, some on this side, and some on that side: and they struck them, so that they let none of them remain or escape. 23 The king of `Ai they took alive, and brought him to Yehoshua. 24 It happened, when Yisra'el had made an end of killing all the inhabitants of `Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them, and they were all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all Yisra'el returned to `Ai, and struck it with the edge of the sword. 25 All that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of `Ai. 26 For Yehoshua didn't draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of `Ai. 27  Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Yisra'el took for prey to themselves, according to the word of the LORD which he commanded Yehoshua. 28 So Yehoshua burnt `Ai, and made it a heap forever, even a desolation, to this day. 29 The king of `Ai he hanged on a tree until the evening: and at the going down of the sun Yehoshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, and cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised thereon a great heap of stones, to this day. 30 Then Yehoshua built an altar to the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, in Mount `Eval, 31 as Moshe the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Yisra'el, as it is written in the book of the law of Moshe, an altar of uncut stones, on which no man had lifted up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings to the LORD, and sacrificed peace-offerings. 32 He wrote there on the stones a copy of the law of Moshe, which he wrote, in the presence of the children of Yisra'el. 33 All Yisra'el, and their Zakenim and officers, and their judges, stood on this side of the ark and on that side before the Kohanim the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the sojourner as the native; half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount `Eval; as Moshe the servant of the LORD had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Yisra'el. 34 Afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law. 35 There was not a word of all that Moshe commanded, which Yehoshua didn't read before all the assembly of Yisra'el, and the women, and the little ones, and the sojourners who were among them.

9:1 It happened, when all the kings who were beyond the Yarden, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Levanon, the Hittite, and the Amori, the Kana`ani, the Perizzi, the Hivvi, and the Yevusi, heard of it; 2 that they gathered themselves together, to fight with Yehoshua and with Yisra'el, with one accord.

NEW TESTAMENT: LUKE 16:1 - 18

16:1 He said also to his talmidim, "There was a certain rich man, who had a manager. The same was accused to him of wasting his possessions.

2 He called him, and said to him, 'What is this that I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.'

3 "The manager said within himself, 'What will I do, seeing that my lord is taking away the management position from me? I don't have strength to dig. I am ashamed to beg.

4 I know what I will do, so that when I am removed from management, they may receive me into their houses.'

5 Calling each one of his lord's debtors to him, he said to the first, 'How much do you owe to my lord?'

6 He said, 'A hundred batos of oil.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.'

7  Then said he to another, 'How much do you owe?' He said, 'A hundred cors of wheat.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, and write eighty.'

8 "His lord commended the unrighteous steward because he had done wisely, for the sons of this world are, in their own generation, wiser than the sons of the light.

9 I tell you, make for yourselves friends by means of unrighteous mammon, so that when you fail, they may receive you into the eternal tents.

10 He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much. He who is unrighteous in a very little is also unrighteous in much.

11 If therefore you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

12 If you have not been faithful in that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own?

13 No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. You aren't able to serve God and mammon."

14 The Perushim, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they scoffed at him.

15 He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts. For that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

16 The law and the prophets were until Yochanan. From that time the Good News of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.

17  But it is easier for heaven and eretz to pass away, than for one tiny stroke of a pen in the law to fall.

18 Everyone who divorces his wife, and marries another, commits adultery. He who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
