PSALMS: 19
For
the director of music. A psalm of David.
1
The
heavens declare the glory of God;
the
skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2
Day
after day they pour forth speech;
night
after night they display knowledge.
3
There
is no speech or language
where
their voice is not heard. A
4
Their
voice B goes out into all the earth,
their
words to the ends of the world.
In
the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
5
which
is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
like
a champion rejoicing to run his course.
6
It
rises at one end of the heavens
and
makes its circuit to the other;
nothing
is hidden from its heat.
7
The
law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving
the soul.
The
statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,
making
wise the simple.
8
The
precepts of the LORD are right,
giving
joy to the heart.
The
commands of the LORD are radiant,
giving
light to the eyes.
9
The
fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring
forever.
The
ordinances of the LORD are sure
and
altogether righteous. [1]
10
They
are more precious than gold,
than
much pure gold;
they
are sweeter than honey,
than
honey from the comb.
11
By
them is your servant warned;
in
keeping them there is great reward.
12
Who
can discern his errors?
Forgive
my hidden faults.
13
Keep
your servant also from willful sins;
may
they not rule over me.
Then
will I be blameless,
innocent
of great transgression.
14
May
the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be
pleasing in your sight,
O
LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer. [2]
PSALMS: 49
For
the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.
1
Hear
this, all you peoples;
listen,
all who live in this world,
2
both
low and high,
rich
and poor alike:
3
My
mouth will speak words of wisdom;
the
utterance from my heart will give understanding.
4
I
will turn my ear to a proverb;
with
the harp I will expound my riddle:
5
Why
should I fear when evil days come,
when
wicked deceivers surround me--
6
those
who trust in their wealth
and
boast of their great riches?
7
No
man can redeem the life of another
or
give to God a ransom for him--
8
the
ransom for a life is costly,
no
payment is ever enough--
9
that
he should live on forever
and
not see decay.
10
For
all can see that wise men die;
the
foolish and the senseless alike perish
and
leave their wealth to others.
11
Their
tombs will remain their houses A forever,
their
dwellings for endless generations,
though
they had B named lands after themselves. [3]
12
But
man, despite his riches, does not endure;
he
is C like the beasts that perish.
13
This
is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
and
of their followers, who approve their sayings.
Selah
14
Like
sheep they are destined for the grave, D
and
death will feed on them.
The
upright will rule over them in the morning;
their
forms will decay in the grave, E
far
from their princely mansions.
15
But
God will redeem my life F from the grave;
he
will surely take me to himself.
Selah
16
Do
not be overawed when a man grows rich,
when
the splendor of his house increases;
17
for
he will take nothing with him when he dies,
his
splendor will not descend with him.
18
Though
while he lived he counted himself blessed--
and
men praise you when you prosper--
19
he
will join the generation of his fathers,
who
will never see the light of life.
20
A
man who has riches without understanding
is
like the beasts that perish. [4]
PSALMS: 79
A
psalm of Asaph.
1
O
God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
they
have defiled your holy temple,
they
have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
2
They
have given the dead bodies of your servants
as
food to the birds of the air,
the
flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth.
3
They
have poured out blood like water
all
around Jerusalem,
and
there is no one to bury the dead.
4
We
are objects of reproach to our neighbors,
of
scorn and derision to those around us.
5
How
long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever?
How
long will your jealousy burn like fire?
6
Pour
out your wrath on the nations
that
do not acknowledge you,
on
the kingdoms
that
do not call on your name;
7
for
they have devoured Jacob
and
destroyed his homeland.
8
Do
not hold against us the sins of the fathers;
may
your mercy come quickly to meet us,
for
we are in desperate need.
9
Help
us, O God our Savior,
for
the glory of your name;
deliver
us and forgive our sins
for
your name's sake.
10
Why
should the nations say,
"Where
is their God?" [5]
Before
our eyes, make known among the nations
that
you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.
11
May
the groans of the prisoners come before you;
by
the strength of your arm
preserve
those condemned to die.
12
Pay
back into the laps of our neighbors seven times
the
reproach they have hurled at you, O Lord.
13
Then
we your people, the sheep of your pasture,
will
praise you forever;
from
generation to generation
we
will recount your praise. [6]
PSALMS: 109
For
the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
1
O
God, whom I praise,
do
not remain silent,
2
for
wicked and deceitful men
have
opened their mouths against me;
they
have spoken against me with lying tongues.
3
With
words of hatred they surround me;
they
attack me without cause.
4
In
return for my friendship they accuse me,
but
I am a man of prayer.
5
They
repay me evil for good,
and
hatred for my friendship.
6
Appoint
A an evil man B to oppose him;
let
an accuser C stand at his right hand.
7
When
he is tried, let him be found guilty,
and
may his prayers condemn him.
8
May
his days be few;
may
another take his place of leadership.
9
May
his children be fatherless
and
his wife a widow.
10
May
his children be wandering beggars;
may
they be driven D from their ruined homes.
11
May
a creditor seize all he has;
may
strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.
12
May
no one extend kindness to him
or
take pity on his fatherless children.
13
May
his descendants be cut off, [7]
their
names blotted out from the next generation.
14
May
the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD;
may
the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
15
May
their sins always remain before the LORD,
that
he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.
16
For
he never thought of doing a kindness,
but
hounded to death the poor
and
the needy and the brokenhearted.
17
He
loved to pronounce a curse--
may
it E come on him;
he
found no pleasure in blessing--
may
it be F far from him.
18
He
wore cursing as his garment;
it
entered into his body like water,
into
his bones like oil.
19
May
it be like a cloak wrapped about him,
like
a belt tied forever around him.
20
May
this be the LORD's payment to my accusers,
to
those who speak evil of me.
21
But
you, O Sovereign LORD,
deal
well with me for your name's sake;
out
of the goodness of your love, deliver me.
22
For
I am poor and needy,
and
my heart is wounded within me.
23
I
fade away like an evening shadow;
I
am shaken off like a locust.
24
My
knees give way from fasting;
my
body is thin and gaunt.
25
I
am an object of scorn to my accusers;
when
they see me, they shake their heads. [8]
26
Help
me, O LORD my God;
save
me in accordance with your love.
27
Let
them know that it is your hand,
that
you, O LORD, have done it.
28
They
may curse, but you will bless;
when
they attack they will be put to shame,
but
your servant will rejoice.
29
My
accusers will be clothed with disgrace
and
wrapped in shame as in a cloak.
30
With
my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD;
in
the great throng I will praise him.
31
For
he stands at the right hand of the needy one,
to
save his life from those who condemn him. [9]
PSALMS: 139
For
the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
1
O
LORD, you have searched me
and
you know me.
2
You
know when I sit and when I rise;
you
perceive my thoughts from afar.
3
You
discern my going out and my lying down;
you
are familiar with all my ways.
4
Before
a word is on my tongue
you
know it completely, O LORD.
5
You
hem me in--behind and before;
you
have laid your hand upon me.
6
Such
knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too
lofty for me to attain.
7
Where
can I go from your Spirit?
Where
can I flee from your presence?
8
If
I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if
I make my bed in the depths, A you are there.
9
If
I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if
I settle on the far side of the sea,
10
even
there your hand will guide me,
your
right hand will hold me fast.
11
If
I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
and
the light become night around me,"
12
even
the darkness will not be dark to you;
the
night will shine like the day,
for
darkness is as light to you. [10]
13
For
you created my inmost being;
you
knit me together in my mother's womb.
14
I
praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your
works are wonderful,
I
know that full well.
15
My
frame was not hidden from you
when
I was made in the secret place.
When
I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
16
your
eyes saw my unformed body.
All
the days ordained for me
were
written in your book
before
one of them came to be.
17
How
precious to B me are your thoughts, O God!
How
vast is the sum of them!
18
Were
I to count them,
they
would outnumber the grains of sand.
When
I awake,
I
am still with you.
19
If
only you would slay the wicked, O God!
Away
from me, you bloodthirsty men!
20
They
speak of you with evil intent;
your
adversaries misuse your name.
21
Do
I not hate those who hate you, O LORD,
and
abhor those who rise up against you?
22
I
have nothing but hatred for them;
I
count them my enemies.
23
Search
me, O God, and know my heart;
test
me and know my anxious thoughts.
24
See
if there is any offensive way in me,
and
lead me in the way everlasting. [11]
PROVERBS: 19
19
1
Better a poor man whose walk is blameless
than
a fool whose lips are perverse.
2
It
is not good to have zeal without knowledge,
nor
to be hasty and miss the way.
3
A
man's own folly ruins his life,
yet
his heart rages against the LORD.
4
Wealth
brings many friends,
but
a poor man's friend deserts him.
5
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will not go free.
6
Many
curry favor with a ruler,
and
everyone is the friend of a man who gives gifts.
7
A
poor man is shunned by all his relatives--
how
much more do his friends avoid him!
Though
he pursues them with pleading,
they
are nowhere to be found. A
8
He
who gets wisdom loves his own soul;
he
who cherishes understanding prospers.
9
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will perish.
10
It
is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury--
how
much worse for a slave to rule over princes!
11
A
man's wisdom gives him patience;
it
is to his glory to overlook an offense. [12]
12
A
king's rage is like the roar of a lion,
but
his favor is like dew on the grass.
13
A
foolish son is his father's ruin,
and
a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping.
14
Houses
and wealth are inherited from parents,
but
a prudent wife is from the LORD.
15
Laziness
brings on deep sleep,
and
the shiftless man goes hungry.
16
He
who obeys instructions guards his life,
but
he who is contemptuous of his ways will die.
17
He
who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD,
and
he will reward him for what he has done.
18
Discipline
your son, for in that there is hope;
do
not be a willing party to his death.
19
A
hot-tempered man must pay the penalty;
if
you rescue him, you will have to do it again.
20
Listen
to advice and accept instruction,
and
in the end you will be wise.
21
Many
are the plans in a man's heart,
but
it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.
22
What
a man desires is unfailing love B;
better
to be poor than a liar. [13]
23
The
fear of the LORD leads to life:
Then
one rests content, untouched by trouble.
24
The
sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
he
will not even bring it back to his mouth!
25
Flog
a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence;
rebuke
a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.
26
He
who robs his father and drives out his mother
is
a son who brings shame and disgrace.
27
Stop
listening to instruction, my son,
and
you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28
A
corrupt witness mocks at justice,
and
the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.
29
Penalties
are prepared for mockers,
and
beatings for the backs of fools. [14]
OLD
TESTAMENT: JOEL 1:1 - 3:21
1
1
The
word of the LORD that came to Joel son of Pethuel.
2
Hear
this, you elders;
listen,
all who live in the land.
Has
anything like this ever happened in your days
or
in the days of your forefathers?
3
Tell
it to your children,
and
let your children tell it to their children,
and
their children to the next generation.
4
What
the locust swarm has left
the
great locusts have eaten;
what
the great locusts have left
the
young locusts have eaten;
what
the young locusts have left
other
locusts A have eaten.
5
Wake
up, you drunkards, and weep!
Wail,
all you drinkers of wine;
wail
because of the new wine,
for
it has been snatched from your lips.
6
A
nation has invaded my land,
powerful
and without number;
it
has the teeth of a lion,
the
fangs of a lioness.
7
It
has laid waste my vines [15]
and
ruined my fig trees.
It
has stripped off their bark
and
thrown it away,
leaving
their branches white.
8
Mourn
like a virgin B in sackcloth
grieving
for the husband C of her youth.
9
Grain
offerings and drink offerings
are
cut off from the house of the LORD.
The
priests are in mourning,
those
who minister before the LORD.
10
The
fields are ruined,
the
ground is dried up D;
the
grain is destroyed,
the
new wine is dried up,
the
oil fails.
11
Despair,
you farmers,
wail,
you vine growers;
grieve
for the wheat and the barley,
because
the harvest of the field is destroyed.
12
The
vine is dried up
and
the fig tree is withered;
the
pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree--
all
the trees of the field--are dried up.
Surely
the joy of mankind
is
withered away. [16]
13
Put
on sackcloth, O priests, and mourn;
wail,
you who minister before the altar.
Come,
spend the night in sackcloth,
you
who minister before my God;
for
the grain offerings and drink offerings
are
withheld from the house of your God.
14
Declare
a holy fast;
call
a sacred assembly.
Summon
the elders
and
all who live in the land
to
the house of the LORD your God,
and
cry out to the LORD.
15
Alas
for that day!
For
the day of the LORD is near;
it
will come like destruction from the Almighty. E
16
Has
not the food been cut off
before
our very eyes--
joy
and gladness
from
the house of our God?
17
The
seeds are shriveled
beneath
the clods. F
The
storehouses are in ruins,
the
granaries have been broken down,
for
the grain has dried up. [17]
18
How
the cattle moan!
The
herds mill about
because
they have no pasture;
even
the flocks of sheep are suffering.
19
To
you, O LORD, I call,
for
fire has devoured the open pastures
and
flames have burned up all the trees of the field.
20
Even
the wild animals pant for you;
the
streams of water have dried up
and
fire has devoured the open pastures.
2
1
Blow
the trumpet in Zion;
sound
the alarm on my holy hill.
Let
all who live in the land tremble,
for
the day of the LORD is coming.
It
is close at hand--
2
a day of darkness and gloom,
a
day of clouds and blackness.
Like
dawn spreading across the mountains
a
large and mighty army comes,
such
as never was of old
nor
ever will be in ages to come.
3
Before
them fire devours, [18]
behind
them a flame blazes.
Before
them the land is like the garden of Eden,
behind
them, a desert waste--
nothing
escapes them.
4
They
have the appearance of horses;
they
gallop along like cavalry.
5
With
a noise like that of chariots
they
leap over the mountaintops,
like
a crackling fire consuming stubble,
like
a mighty army drawn up for battle.
6
At
the sight of them, nations are in anguish;
every
face turns pale.
7
They
charge like warriors;
they
scale walls like soldiers.
They
all march in line,
not
swerving from their course.
8
They
do not jostle each other;
each
marches straight ahead.
They
plunge through defenses
without
breaking ranks.
9
They
rush upon the city;
they
run along the wall.
They
climb into the houses;
like
thieves they enter through the windows. [19]
10
Before
them the earth shakes,
the
sky trembles,
the
sun and moon are darkened,
and
the stars no longer shine.
11
The
LORD thunders
at
the head of his army;
his
forces are beyond number,
and
mighty are those who obey his command.
The
day of the LORD is great;
it
is dreadful.
Who
can endure it?
12
"Even now," declares the LORD,
"return to me with all your heart,
with
fasting and weeping and mourning."
13
Rend
your heart
and
not your garments.
Return
to the LORD your God,
for
he is gracious and compassionate,
slow
to anger and abounding in love,
and
he relents from sending calamity.
14
Who
knows? He may turn and have pity
and
leave behind a blessing-- [20]
grain
offerings and drink offerings
for
the LORD your God.
15
Blow
the trumpet in Zion,
declare
a holy fast,
call
a sacred assembly.
16
Gather
the people,
consecrate
the assembly;
bring
together the elders,
gather
the children,
those
nursing at the breast.
Let
the bridegroom leave his room
and
the bride her chamber.
17
Let
the priests, who minister before the LORD,
weep
between the temple porch and the altar.
Let
them say, "Spare your people, O LORD.
Do
not make your inheritance an object of scorn,
a
byword among the nations.
Why
should they say among the peoples,
`Where
is their God?' "
18
Then
the LORD will be jealous for his land
and
take pity on his people.
19
The
LORD will replyA to them:
"I am sending you grain, new wine and oil, [21]
enough
to satisfy you fully;
never
again will I make you
an
object of scorn to the nations.
20
"I will drive the northern army far from you,
pushing
it into a parched and barren land,
with
its front columns going into the eastern sea B
and
those in the rear into the western sea.
C
And
its stench will go up;
its
smell will rise."
Surely
he has done great things. D
21
Be not afraid, O land;
be
glad and rejoice.
Surely
the LORD has done great things.
22
Be not afraid, O wild animals,
for
the open pastures are becoming green.
The
trees are bearing their fruit;
the
fig tree and the vine yield their riches.
23
Be
glad, O people of Zion,
rejoice
in the LORD your God,
for
he has given you
the
autumn rains in righteousness. E
He
sends you abundant showers,
both
autumn and spring rains, as before.
24
The
threshing floors will be filled with grain;
the
vats will overflow with new wine and oil. [22]
25
"I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten--
the
great locust and the young locust,
the
other locusts and the locust swarm F--
my
great army that I sent among you.
26 You
will have plenty to eat, until you are full,
and
you will praise the name of the LORD your God,
who
has worked wonders for you;
never
again will my people be shamed.
27 Then
you will know that I am in Israel,
that
I am the LORD your God,
and
that there is no other;
never
again will my people be shamed.
28
"And afterward,
I
will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your
sons and daughters will prophesy,
your
old men will dream dreams,
your
young men will see visions.
29 Even
on my servants, both men and women,
I
will pour out my Spirit in those days.
30 I
will show wonders in the heavens
and
on the earth,
blood
and fire and billows of smoke.
and
the moon to blood
before
the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.
32
And
everyone who calls
on
the name of the LORD will be saved;
for
on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
there
will be deliverance,
as
the LORD has said,
among
the survivors
whom
the LORD calls.
3
1
"In those days and at that time,
when
I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,
2 I
will gather all nations
and
bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat.
A
There
I will enter into judgment against them
concerning
my inheritance, my people Israel,
for
they scattered my people among the nations
and
divided up my land.
3
They
cast lots for my people
and
traded boys for prostitutes;
they
sold girls for wine
that
they might drink.
[24]
4
"Now what have you against me, O Tyre and Sidon and all you
regions of Philistia? Are you repaying me for something I have done? If you are
paying me back, I will swiftly and speedily return on your own heads what you
have done. 5 For you took my silver and my gold and carried off my finest
treasures to your temples. 6
You sold the people of Judah and
Jerusalem to the Greeks, that you might send them far from their homeland.
7
"See, I am going to rouse them out of the places to which you
sold them, and I will return on your own heads what you have done.
8 I will
sell your sons and daughters to the people of Judah, and they will sell them to
the Sabeans, a nation far away." The LORD has spoken.
9
Proclaim
this among the nations:
Prepare
for war!
Rouse
the warriors!
Let
all the fighting men draw near and attack.
10
Beat
your plowshares into swords
and
your pruning hooks into spears.
Let
the weakling say,
"I
am strong!"
11
Come
quickly, all you nations from every side,
and
assemble there.
Bring
down your warriors, O LORD!
12
"Let
the nations be roused;
let
them advance into the Valley of Jehoshaphat,
for
there I will sit
to
judge all the nations on every side.
13
Swing
the sickle,
for
the harvest is ripe. [25]
Come,
trample the grapes,
for
the winepress is full
and
the vats overflow--
so
great is their wickedness!"
14
Multitudes,
multitudes
in
the valley of decision!
For
the day of the LORD is near
in
the valley of decision.
15
The
sun and moon will be darkened,
and
the stars no longer shine.
16
The
LORD will roar from Zion
and
thunder from Jerusalem;
the
earth and the sky will tremble.
But
the LORD will be a refuge for his people,
a
stronghold for the people of Israel.
17
"Then you will know that I, the LORD your God,
dwell
in Zion, my holy hill.
Jerusalem
will be holy;
never
again will foreigners invade her.
18
"In that day the mountains will drip new wine,
and
the hills will flow with milk;
all
the ravines of Judah will run with water.
A
fountain will flow out of the LORD's house
and
will water the valley of acacias.
B [26]
19 But
Egypt will be desolate,
Edom
a desert waste,
because
of violence done to the people of Judah,
in
whose land they shed innocent blood.
20 Judah
will be inhabited forever
and
Jerusalem through all generations.
21
Their
bloodguilt, which I have not pardoned,
I
will pardon."
The
LORD dwells in Zion! [27]
NEW
TESTAMENT: REVELATION 1:1 -
20
1
1
The
revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must
soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,
2 who testifies to everything he saw--that is, the word of God and
the testimony of Jesus Christ.
3
Blessed
is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear
it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.
4
John,
To
the seven churches in the province of Asia:
Grace
and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the
seven spirits A before his throne, 5 and from Jesus
Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler
of the kings of the earth.
To
him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and
has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father--to him be
glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.
7
Look,
he is coming with the clouds,
and
every eye will see him,
even
those who pierced him;
and
all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him.
So
shall it be! Amen.
8
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God,
"who is, and who was, and who is to come, the
Almighty."
9
I,
John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient
endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the
word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 On the Lord's Day I was in
the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11
which said: "Write on a scroll what you see and
send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis,
Philadelphia and Laodicea." [28]
12
I
turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw
seven golden lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was someone
"like a son of man," B dressed in
a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest.
14
His
head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like
blazing fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and
his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 16 In his right hand
he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His
face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.
17
When
I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on
me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and
the Last. 18 I am the Living One;
I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of
death and Hades.
19
"Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and
what will take place later.
20
The
mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden
lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels
C of the seven churches, and the seven
lampstands are the seven churches. [29]

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
