earth is the LORD's, and everything in it,

who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who
does not lift up his soul to an idol
or
swear by what is false. A

became God's sanctuary,

sea looked and fled,
the
Jordan turned back;

the
mountains skipped like rams,
the
hills like lambs.

Why
was it, O sea, that you fled,
O
Jordan, that you turned back,

you
mountains, that you skipped like rams,
you
hills, like lambs?
7
Tremble,
O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at
the presence of the God of Jacob,

who
turned the rock into a pool,

Praise
be to the LORD my Rock,

Deliver
me and rescue me
from
the hands of foreigners

mouths are full of lies,

right hands are deceitful.

Then
our sons in their youth
will
be like well-nurtured plants,
and
our daughters will be like pillars
carved
to adorn a palace.
13
Our
barns will be filled
with
every kind of provision.
Our
sheep will increase by thousands,
by
tens of thousands in our fields;
14
our
oxen will draw heavy loads. B
There
will be no breaching of walls,
no
going into captivity,
no
cry of distress in our streets.
15
Blessed
are the people of whom this is true;
blessed
are the people whose God is the LORD. [8]
PROVERBS: 24
24
1
Do not envy wicked men,
do
not desire their company;
2
for
their hearts plot violence,
and
their lips talk about making trouble.
3
By
wisdom a house is built,
and
through understanding it is established;
4
through
knowledge its rooms are filled
with
rare and beautiful treasures.
5
A
wise man has great power,
and
a man of knowledge increases strength;
6
for
waging war you need guidance,
and
for victory many advisers.
7
Wisdom
is too high for a fool;
in
the assembly at the gate he has nothing to say.
8
He
who plots evil
will
be known as a schemer.
9
The
schemes of folly are sin,
and
men detest a mocker.
10
If
you falter in times of trouble,
how
small is your strength!
11
Rescue
those being led away to death;
hold
back those staggering toward slaughter.
12
If
you say, "But we knew nothing about this,"
does
not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does
not he who guards your life know it?
Will
he not repay each person according to what he has done? [9]
13
Eat
honey, my son, for it is good;
honey
from the comb is sweet to your taste.
14
Know
also that wisdom is sweet to your soul;
if
you find it, there is a future hope for you,
and
your hope will not be cut off.
15
Do
not lie in wait like an outlaw against a righteous man's
house,
do
not raid his dwelling place;
16
for
though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again,
but
the wicked are brought down by calamity.
17
Do
not gloat when your enemy falls;
when
he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice,
18
or
the LORD will see and disapprove
and
turn his wrath away from him.
19
Do
not fret because of evil men
or
be envious of the wicked,
20
for
the evil man has no future hope,
and
the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.
21
Fear
the LORD and the king, my son,
and
do not join with the rebellious,
22
for
those two will send sudden destruction upon them,
and
who knows what calamities they can bring?
23
These
also are sayings of the wise:
To
show partiality in judging is not good:
24
Whoever
says to the guilty, "You are innocent"--
peoples
will curse him and nations denounce him.
25
But
it will go well with those who convict the guilty,
and
rich blessing will come upon them. [10]
26
An
honest answer
is
like a kiss on the lips.
27
Finish
your outdoor work
and
get your fields ready;
after
that, build your house.
28
Do
not testify against your neighbor without cause,
or
use your lips to deceive.
29
Do
not say, "I'll do to him as he has done to me;
I'll
pay that man back for what he did."
30
I
went past the field of the sluggard,
past
the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment;
31
thorns
had come up everywhere,
the
ground was covered with weeds,
and
the stone wall was in ruins.
32
I
applied my heart to what I observed
and
learned a lesson from what I saw:
33
A
little sleep, a little slumber,
a
little folding of the hands to rest--
34
and
poverty will come on you like a bandit
and
scarcity like an armed man. A [11]
OLD
TESTAMENT: JONAH 1:1 - 4:11

1
The
word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 "Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it,
because its wickedness has come up before me."
3
But
Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa,
where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard
and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.
4
Then
the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the
ship threatened to break up. 5 All the sailors were afraid and each
cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the
ship.
But
Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6
The captain went to him and said, "How can you sleep? Get up and call on
your god! Maybe he will take notice of us, and we will not perish."
7
Then
the sailors said to each other, "Come, let us cast lots to find out who is
responsible for this calamity." They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
8
So
they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us?
What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people
are you?"
9
He
answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the
sea and the land."
10
This
terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running
away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)
11
The
sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to
you to make the sea calm down for us?"
12
"Pick
me up and throw me into the sea," he replied, "and it will become calm. I know
that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you."
13
Instead,
the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew
even wilder than before. 14 Then they cried to the LORD, "O LORD,
please do not let us die for taking this man's life. Do not hold us accountable
for killing an innocent man, for you, O LORD, have done as you pleased." 15
Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew
calm. 16 At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a
sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.
17
But
the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish
three days and three nights.
"In
my distress I called to the LORD,
and
he answered me.
From
the depths of the grave A I called for help,
and
you listened to my cry.
3
You
hurled me into the deep,
into
the very heart of the seas,
and
the currents swirled about me;
all
your waves and breakers
swept
over me.
4
I
said, `I have been banished
from
your sight;
yet
I will look again
toward
your holy temple.'
5
The
engulfing waters threatened me, B
the
deep surrounded me;
seaweed
was wrapped around my head.
6
To
the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the
earth beneath barred me in forever.
But
you brought my life up from the pit,
O
LORD my God.
7
"When
my life was ebbing away,
I
remembered you, LORD,
and
my prayer rose to you,
to
your holy temple.
8
"Those
who cling to worthless idols
forfeit
the grace that could be theirs. [13]
9
But
I, with a song of thanksgiving,
will
sacrifice to you.
What
I have vowed I will make good.
Salvation
comes from the LORD."
10
And
the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry
land.

Then
the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 2 "Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the
message I give you."
3
Jonah
obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very
important city--a visit required three days. 4 On the first day,
Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: "Forty
more days and Nineveh will be overturned." 5 The Ninevites
believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the
least, put on sackcloth.
6
When
the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his
royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 7
Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh:
"By
the decree of the king and his nobles:
Do
not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or
drink.
8
But
let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God.
Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9 Who knows? God
may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will
not perish."
10
When
God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had
compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.[14]

But
Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. 2 He prayed to the
LORD, "O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I
was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from
sending calamity. 3 Now, O LORD, take away my life, for it is better
for me to die than to live."
4
But
the LORD replied, "Have you any right to be
angry?"
5
Jonah
went out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a
shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city.
6 Then the LORD God provided a vine and made it grow up over Jonah to
give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about
the vine. 7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which
chewed the vine so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God
provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah's head so that he
grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, "It would be better for me to die than
to live."
9
But
God said to Jonah, "Do you have a right to be angry
about the vine?"
"I
do," he said. "I am angry enough to die."
10
But
the LORD said, "You have been concerned about this
vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and
died overnight. 11 But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand
people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as
well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?" [15]

Then
I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on
both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel
proclaiming in a loud voice, "Who is worthy to
break the seals and open the scroll?" 3 But no one in heaven
or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it.
4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the
scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not
weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He
is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."
6
Then
I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the
throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven
horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits A of God sent out
into all the earth. 7 He came and took the scroll from the right hand
of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four
living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one
had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the
prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song:
"You
are worthy to take the scroll
and
to open its seals,
because
you were slain,
and
with your blood you purchased men for God
from
every tribe and language and people and nation.
10
You
have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and
they will reign on the earth."
11
Then
I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands,
and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living
creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they sang:
"Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to
receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and
honor and glory and praise!"
13
Then
I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the
sea, and all that is in them, singing: [16]
"To
him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be
praise and honor and glory and power,
for
ever and ever!"
14 The four living creatures said,
"Amen," and the elders fell down and worshiped. [17]
