you have upheld my right and my cause;

have sat on your throne, judging righteously.

Endless
ruin has overtaken the enemy,

even

The
LORD reigns forever;

when I was silent and still,

anguish increased.

My
heart grew hot within me,
and
as I meditated, the fire burned;
then
I spoke with my tongue:

"Show
me, O LORD, my life's end
and
the number of my days;
let
me know how fleeting is my life.

You
have made my days a mere handbreadth;
the
span of my years is as nothing before you.
Each
man's life is but a breath.

me, O God,

the waters have come up to my neck.

sink in the miry depths,

there is no foothold.

have come into the deep waters;

am worn out calling for help;

looking
for my God.

Those
who hate me without reason
outnumber
the hairs of my head;
many
are my enemies without cause,
those
who seek to destroy me.

am forced to restore

I did not steal.

You
know my folly, O God;

I pray to you, O LORD,
in
the time of your favor;

answer
me with your sure salvation.

Rescue
me from the mire,
do
not let me sink;
deliver
me from those who hate me,
from
the deep waters.
15
Do
not let the floodwaters engulf me
or
the depths swallow me up
or
the pit close its mouth over me.
16
Answer
me, O LORD, out of the goodness of your love;
in
your great mercy turn to me.
17
Do
not hide your face from your servant;
answer
me quickly, for I am in trouble.
18
Come
near and rescue me;
redeem
me because of my foes.
19
You
know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed;
all
my enemies are before you.

Scorn
has broken my heart [6]
and
has left me helpless;
I
looked for sympathy, but there was none,
for
comforters, but I found none.

They
put gall in my food
and
gave me vinegar for my thirst.

May
the table set before them become a snare;
may
it become retribution and A a trap.
23
May
their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
and
their backs be bent forever.
24
Pour
out your wrath on them;
let
your fierce anger overtake them.
25
May
their place be deserted;
let
there be no one to dwell in their tents.
26
For
they persecute those you wound
and
talk about the pain of those you hurt.
27
Charge
them with crime upon crime;
do
not let them share in your salvation.
28
May
they be blotted out of the book of life
and
not be listed with the righteous.
29
I
am in pain and distress;
may
your salvation, O God, protect me.
30
I
will praise God's name in song
and
glorify him with thanksgiving.
31
This
will please the LORD more than an ox,
more
than a bull with its horns and hoofs.

The
poor will see and be glad--
you
who seek God, may your hearts live!

The
LORD hears the needy

They
have greatly oppressed me from my youth--
let
Israel say--

have greatly oppressed me from my youth,

they have not gained the victory over me.

Plowmen
have plowed my back
and
made their furrows long.

But
the LORD is righteous;
he
has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.
5
May
all who hate Zion
be
turned back in shame.
6
May
they be like grass on the roof,
which
withers before it can grow;
7
with
it the reaper cannot fill his hands,
nor
the one who gathers fill his arms.

those who pass by not say,
"The

1
Wisdom has built her house;
she
has hewn out its seven pillars.
2
She
has prepared her meat and mixed her wine;
she
has also set her table.
3
She
has sent out her maids, and she calls
from
the highest point of the city.
4
"Let all who are simple come in
here!"
she
says to those who lack judgment.
5
"Come, eat my food
and
drink the wine I have mixed.
6 Leave
your simple ways and you will live;
walk
in the way of understanding.
7
"Whoever corrects a mocker invites
insult;
whoever
rebukes a wicked man incurs abuse.
8 Do
not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you;
rebuke
a wise man and he will love you.
9 Instruct
a wise man and he will be wiser still;
teach
a righteous man and he will add to his learning.
10
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of
wisdom,
and
knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For
through me your days will be many,
and
years will be added to your life.
12 If
you are wise, your wisdom will reward you;
if
you are a mocker, you alone will suffer."
13
The
woman Folly is loud;
she
is undisciplined and without knowledge.
14
She
sits at the door of her house,
on
a seat at the highest point of the city,
15
calling
out to those who pass by,
who
go straight on their way.
16
"Let all who are simple come in here!" [11]
she

"Stolen water is sweet;
food
eaten in secret is delicious!"

But
little do they know that the dead are there,

OLD
TESTAMENT: DANIEL 6:1 - 28

1
It
pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, 2
with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps
were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss. 3
Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the
satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the
whole kingdom. 4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to
find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs,
but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he
was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.
5
Finally
these men said, "We will never find any basis for charges against this man
Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God."
6
So
the administrators and the satraps went as a group to the king and said: "O King
Darius, live forever! 7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps,
advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and
enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or man during the next
thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be thrown into the lions' den. 8
Now, O king, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be
altered--in accordance with the laws of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be
repealed." 9 So King Darius put the decree in writing.
10
Now
when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his
upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he
got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done
before.
11
Then
these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.
12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree:
"Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays
to any god or man except to you, O king, would be thrown into the lions' den?"
The
king answered, "The decree stands--in accordance with the laws of the Medes and
Persians, which cannot be repealed."
13
Then
they said to the king, "Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no
attention to you, O king, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays
three times a day." 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly
distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until
sundown to save him.
15
Then
the men went as a group to the king and said to him, "Remember, O king, that
according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king
issues can be changed."
16
So
the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions'
den. The king said to Daniel, "May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue
you!"
17
A
stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it
with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, [13]
so that Daniel's situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king
returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any
entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.
19
At
the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions' den. 20
When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice,
"Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually,
been able to rescue you from the lions?"
21
Daniel
answered, "O king, live forever! 22 My God sent his angel, and he
shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found
innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king."
23
The
king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when
Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had
trusted in his God.
24
At
the king's command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and
thrown into the lions' den, along with their wives and children. And before they
reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their
bones.
25
Then
King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations and men of every language
throughout the land:
"May
you prosper greatly!
26
"I
issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence
the God of Daniel.
"For
he is the living God
and
he endures forever;
his
kingdom will not be destroyed,
his
dominion will never end.
27He
rescues and he saves;
he
performs signs and wonders
in
the heavens and on the earth.
He
has rescued Daniel
from
the power of the lions." [14]
28
So
Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus A
the Persian. [15]
NEW
TESTAMENT: 2 PETER 3:1 -

1
Dear
friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as
reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2 I want you to
recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given
by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
3
First
of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing
and following their own evil desires. 4 They will say, "Where is this
`coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has
since the beginning of creation." 5 But they deliberately forget that
long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water
and by water. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was
deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the present heavens and
earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction
of ungodly men.
8But
do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a
thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is
not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with
you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
10
But
the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a
roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it
will be laid bare. A
11
Since
everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?
You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the
day of God and speed its coming. B That day will bring about the
destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.
13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new
heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.
14
So
then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to
be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind
that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also
wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16 He writes the same
way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain
some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people
distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
17
Therefore,
dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not
be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position.
18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. [16]
