A
psalm of David. When he fled from his son Absalom.
1
O
LORD, how many are my foes!
How
many rise up against me!
2
Many
are saying of me,
"God
will not deliver him."
Selah
A
3
But
you are a shield around me, O LORD;
you
bestow glory on me and lift B up my head.
4
To
the LORD I cry aloud,
and
he answers me from his holy hill.
Selah
5
I
lie down and sleep;
I
wake again, because the LORD sustains me.
6
I
will not fear the tens of thousands
drawn
up against me on every side.
7
Arise,
O LORD!
Deliver
me, O my God!
Strike
all my enemies on the jaw;
break
the teeth of the wicked.
8
From
the LORD comes deliverance.
May
your blessing be on your people.
Selah [1]
PSALMS: 33
1
Sing
joyfully to the LORD, you righteous;
it
is fitting for the upright to praise him.
2
Praise
the LORD with the harp;
make
music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
3
Sing
to him a new song;
play
skillfully, and shout for joy.
4
For
the word of the LORD is right and true;
he
is faithful in all he does.
5
The
LORD loves righteousness and justice;
the
earth is full of his unfailing love.
6
By
the word of the LORD were the heavens made,
their
starry host by the breath of his mouth.
7
He
gathers the waters of the sea into jars A;
he
puts the deep into storehouses.
8
Let
all the earth fear the LORD;
let
all the people of the world revere him.
9
For
he spoke, and it came to be;
he
commanded, and it stood firm.
10
The
LORD foils the plans of the nations;
he
thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
11
But
the plans of the LORD stand firm forever,
the
purposes of his heart through all generations.
12
Blessed
is the nation whose God is the LORD,
the
people he chose for his inheritance.
13
From
heaven the LORD looks down
and
sees all mankind;
14
from
his dwelling place he watches
all
who live on earth--
15
he
who forms the hearts of all,
who
considers everything they do.
16
No
king is saved by the size of his army;
no
warrior escapes by his great strength. [2]
17
A
horse is a vain hope for deliverance;
despite
all its great strength it cannot save.
18
But
the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him,
on
those whose hope is in his unfailing love,
19
to
deliver them from death
and
keep them alive in famine.
20
We
wait in hope for the LORD;
he
is our help and our shield.
21
In
him our hearts rejoice,
for
we trust in his holy name.
22
May
your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD,
even
as we put our hope in you. [3]
PSALMS: 63
A
psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.
1
O
God, you are my God,
earnestly
I seek you;
my
soul thirsts for you,
my
body longs for you,
in
a dry and weary land
where
there is no water.
2
I
have seen you in the sanctuary
and
beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because
your love is better than life,
my
lips will glorify you.
4
I
will praise you as long as I live,
and
in your name I will lift up my hands.
5
My
soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with
singing lips my mouth will praise you.
6
On
my bed I remember you;
I
think of you through the watches of the night.
7
Because
you are my help,
I
sing in the shadow of your wings.
8
My
soul clings to you;
your
right hand upholds me.
9
They
who seek my life will be destroyed;
they
will go down to the depths of the earth.
10
They
will be given over to the sword
and
become food for jackals.[4]
11
But
the king will rejoice in God;
all
who swear by God's name will praise him,
while
the mouths of liars will be silenced. [5]
PSALMS: 93
1
The
LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty;
the
LORD is robed in majesty
and
is armed with strength.
The
world is firmly established;
it
cannot be moved.
2
Your
throne was established long ago;
you
are from all eternity.
3
The
seas have lifted up, O LORD,
the
seas have lifted up their voice;
the
seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
4
Mightier
than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier
than the breakers of the sea--
the
LORD on high is mighty.
5
Your
statutes stand firm;
holiness
adorns your house
for
endless days, O LORD. [6]
PSALMS: 123
A
song of ascents.
1
I
lift up my eyes to you,
to
you whose throne is in heaven.
2
As
the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
as
the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress,
so
our eyes look to the LORD our God,
till
he shows us his mercy.
3
Have
mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy on us,
for
we have endured much contempt.
4
We
have endured much ridicule from the proud,
much
contempt from the arrogant. [7]
PROVERBS: 3
3
1
My son, do not forget my teaching,
but
keep my commands in your heart,
2
for
they will prolong your life many years
and
bring you prosperity.
3
Let
love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind
them around your neck,
write
them on the tablet of your heart.
4
Then
you will win favor and a good name
in
the sight of God and man.
5
Trust
in the LORD with all your heart
and
lean not on your own understanding;
6
in
all your ways acknowledge him,
and
he will make your paths straight. A
7
Do
not be wise in your own eyes;
fear
the LORD and shun evil.
8
This
will bring health to your body
and
nourishment to your bones.
9
Honor
the LORD with your wealth,
with
the firstfruits of all your crops;
10
then
your barns will be filled to overflowing,
and
your vats will brim over with new wine.
11
My
son, do not despise the LORD's discipline
and
do not resent his rebuke,
12
because
the LORD disciplines those he loves,
as
a father B the son he delights in. [8]
13
Blessed
is the man who finds wisdom,
the
man who gains understanding,
14
for
she is more profitable than silver
and
yields better returns than gold.
15
She
is more precious than rubies;
nothing
you desire can compare with her.
16
Long
life is in her right hand;
in
her left hand are riches and honor.
17
Her
ways are pleasant ways,
and
all her paths are peace.
18
She
is a tree of life to those who embrace her;
those
who lay hold of her will be blessed.
19
By
wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations,
by
understanding he set the heavens in place;
20
by
his knowledge the deeps were divided,
and
the clouds let drop the dew.
21
My
son, preserve sound judgment and discernment,
do
not let them out of your sight;
22
they
will be life for you,
an
ornament to grace your neck.
23
Then
you will go on your way in safety,
and
your foot will not stumble;
24
when
you lie down, you will not be afraid;
when
you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
25
Have
no fear of sudden disaster
or
of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
26
for
the LORD will be your confidence
and
will keep your foot from being snared.
27
Do
not withhold good from those who deserve it,
when
it is in your power to act. [9]
28
Do
not say to your neighbor,
"Come
back later; I'll give it tomorrow"--
when
you now have it with you.
29
Do
not plot harm against your neighbor,
who
lives trustfully near you.
30
Do
not accuse a man for no reason--
when
he has done you no harm.
31Do
not envy a violent man
or
choose any of his ways,
32
for
the LORD detests a perverse man
but
takes the upright into his confidence.
33
The
LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked,
but
he blesses the home of the righteous.
34
He
mocks proud mockers
but
gives grace to the humble.
35
The
wise inherit honor,
but
fools he holds up to shame.
OLD
TESTAMENT: GENESIS 46:1 - 47:31
46
1
So
Israel set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba, he offered
sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.
2
And
God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, "Jacob! Jacob!"
"Here
I am," he replied.
3
"I am God, the God of your father," he said. "Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you
into a great nation there. 4 I will
go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph's
own hand will close your eyes."
5
Then
Jacob left Beersheba, and Israel's sons took their father Jacob and their
children and their wives in the carts that Pharaoh had sent to transport him.
6 They also took with them their livestock and the possessions they
had acquired in Canaan, and Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt. 7
He took with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons and his daughters and
granddaughters--all his offspring.
8
These
are the names of the sons of Israel (Jacob and his descendants) who went to
Egypt:
Reuben
the firstborn of Jacob.
9
The
sons of Reuben:
Hanoch,
Pallu, Hezron and Carmi.
10
The
sons of Simeon:
Jemuel,
Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.
11
The
sons of Levi:
Gershon,
Kohath and Merari.
12
The
sons of Judah:
Er,
Onan, Shelah, Perez and Zerah (but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan).
The
sons of Perez:
Hezron
and Hamul.
13
The
sons of Issachar:
Tola,
Puah,A JashubB and Shimron.
14
The
sons of Zebulun:
Sered,
Elon and Jahleel.
15
These
were the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram, C besides his
daughter Dinah. These sons and daughters of his were thirty-three [10]
in all.
16
The
sons of Gad:
Zephon,
D Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.
17
The
sons of Asher:
Imnah,
Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah.
Their
sister was Serah.
The
sons of Beriah:
Heber
and Malkiel.
18
These
were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah, whom Laban had given to his daughter
Leah--sixteen in all.
19
The
sons of Jacob's wife Rachel:
Joseph
and Benjamin. 20 In Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph
by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On. E
21
The
sons of Benjamin:
Bela,
Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.
22
These
were the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob--fourteen in all.
23
The
son of Dan:
Hushim.
24
The
sons of Naphtali:
Jahziel,
Guni, Jezer and Shillem.
25
These
were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah, whom Laban had given to his daughter
Rachel--seven in all.
26
All
those who went to Egypt with Jacob--those who were his direct descendants, not
counting his sons' wives--numbered sixty-six persons. 27 With the two
sons F who had been born to Joseph in Egypt, the members of Jacob's
family, which went to Egypt, were seventy G in all.
28
Now
Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen. When they
arrived in the region of Goshen, 29 Joseph had his [11]chariot
made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as Joseph
appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father H and wept
for a long time.
30
Israel
said to Joseph, "Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you
are still alive."
31
Then
Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, "I will go up and
speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, `My brothers and my father's household,
who were living in the land of Canaan, have come to me. 32 The men
are shepherds; they tend livestock, and they have brought along their flocks and
herds and everything they own.' 33 When Pharaoh calls you in and
asks, `What is your occupation?' 34 you should answer, `Your servants
have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.' Then you
will be allowed to settle in the region of Goshen, for all shepherds are
detestable to the Egyptians."
47
1
Joseph
went and told Pharaoh, "My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and
everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen."
2
He
chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.
3
Pharaoh
asked the brothers, "What is your occupation?"
"Your
servants are shepherds," they replied to Pharaoh, "just as our fathers were."
4
They
also said to him, "We have come to live here awhile, because the famine is
severe in Canaan and your servants' flocks have no pasture. So now, please let
your servants settle in Goshen."
5
Pharaoh
said to Joseph, "Your father and your brothers have come to you, 6
and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers
in the best part of the land. Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any
among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock."
7
Then
Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him before Pharaoh. After Jacob
blessed A Pharaoh, 8 Pharaoh asked him, "How old are you?"
9
And
Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty. My
years have been few and difficult, and they do not equal the years of the
pilgrimage of my fathers." 10 Then Jacob blessed B Pharaoh
and went out from his presence.
11
So
Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in
the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh directed. 12
Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father's
household with food, according to the number of their children.
13
There
was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both
Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the [12]
famine. 14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in
Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying, and he brought it to
Pharaoh's palace. 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan
was gone, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, "Give us food. Why should we die
before your eyes? Our money is used up."
16
"Then
bring your livestock," said Joseph. "I will sell you food in exchange for your
livestock, since your money is gone." 17 So they brought their
livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their
sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys. And he brought them through that year
with food in exchange for all their livestock.
18
When
that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, "We cannot
hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone and our livestock
belongs to you, there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our
land. 19 Why should we perish before your eyes--we and our land as
well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in
bondage to Pharaoh. Give us seed so that we may live and not die, and that the
land may not become desolate."
20
So
Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all,
sold their fields, because the famine was too severe for them. The land became
Pharaoh's,
21
and
Joseph reduced the people to servitude, C from one end of Egypt to
the other.
22
However,
he did not buy the land of the priests, because they received a regular
allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment Pharaoh gave them.
That is why they did not sell their land.
23
Joseph
said to the people, "Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh,
here is seed for you so you can plant the ground. 24 But when the
crop comes in, give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep
as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your
children."
25
"You
have saved our lives," they said. "May we find favor in the eyes of our lord; we
will be in bondage to Pharaoh."
26
So
Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt--still in force
today--that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of
the priests that did not become Pharaoh's.
27
Now
the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property
there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.
28
Jacob
lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and
forty-seven. 29 When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called
for his son Joseph and said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, put
your hand under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and
faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt,
30
but
when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are
buried." [13]
"I
will do as you say," he said.
31
"Swear
to me," he said. Then Joseph swore to him, and Israel worshiped as he leaned on
the top of his staff. D [14]
NEW
TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 15:1 -
28
15
1
Then
some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,
2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They
don't wash their hands before they eat!"
3
Jesus
replied, "And why do you break the command of God for
the sake of your tradition? 4 For
God said, `Honor your father and mother 'A and `Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to
death.' B 5 But you say
that if a man says to his father or mother, `Whatever help you might otherwise
have received from me is a gift devoted to God,' 6 he is not to `honor his father C 'with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of
your tradition. 7 You hypocrites!
Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8
"` These people honor me with their lips,
but
their hearts are far from me.
9They
worship me in vain;
their
teachings are but rules taught by men.'
D"
10
Jesus
called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and
understand. 11 What goes into a
man's mouth does not make him `unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that
is what makes him `unclean.' "
12
Then
the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were
offended when they heard this?"
13
He
replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not
planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides. E If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a
pit."
15
Peter
said, "Explain the parable to us."
16
"Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them. 17
"Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth
goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the
heart, and these make a man `unclean.' 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery,
sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what make a man `unclean'; but eating with
unwashed hands does not make him `unclean.' "
21
Leaving
that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A
Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David,
have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession."
23
Jesus
did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her
away, for she keeps crying out after us."
24
He
answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of
Israel."
25
The
woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. [15]
26
He
replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread
and toss it to their dogs."
27
"Yes,
Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters'
table."
28
Then
Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your
request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour. [16]

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
