For
the director of music. With stringed instruments. According to
sheminith.
A
A psalm of David.
1
O
LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger
or
discipline me in your wrath.
2
Be
merciful to me, LORD, for I am faint;
O
LORD, heal me, for my bones are in agony.
3
My
soul is in anguish.
How
long, O LORD, how long?
4
Turn,
O LORD, and deliver me;
save
me because of your unfailing love.
5
No
one remembers you when he is dead.
Who
praises you from the grave B?
6
I
am worn out from groaning;
all
night long I flood my bed with weeping
and
drench my couch with tears.
7
My
eyes grow weak with sorrow;
they
fail because of all my foes.
8
Away
from me, all you who do evil,
for
the LORD has heard my weeping.
9
The
LORD has heard my cry for mercy;
the
LORD accepts my prayer.
10
All
my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed;
they
will turn back in sudden disgrace. 1
PSALMS:
36
For
the director of music. Of David the servant of the LORD.
1
An
oracle is within my heart
concerning
the sinfulness of the wicked: A
There
is no fear of God
before
his eyes.
2
For
in his own eyes he flatters himself
too
much to detect or hate his sin.
3
The
words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful;
he
has ceased to be wise and to do good.
4
Even
on his bed he plots evil;
he
commits himself to a sinful course
and
does not reject what is wrong.
5
Your
love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens,
your
faithfulness to the skies.
6
Your
righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your
justice like the great deep.
O
LORD, you preserve both man and beast.
7
How
priceless is your unfailing love!
Both
high and low among men
find
B
refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8
They
feast on the abundance of your house;
you
give them drink from your river of delights.
9
For
with you is the fountain of life;
in
your light we see light.
10
Continue
your love to those who know you,
your
righteousness to the upright in heart.
11
May
the foot of the proud not come against me, 2
nor
the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12
See
how the evildoers lie fallen--
thrown
down, not able to rise! 3
PSALMS:
66
For
the director of music. A song. A psalm.
1
Shout
with joy to God, all the earth!
2
Sing
the glory of his name;
make
his praise glorious!
3
Say
to God, "How awesome are your deeds!
So
great is your power
that
your enemies cringe before you.
4
All
the earth bows down to you;
they
sing praise to you,
they
sing praise to your name."
Selah
5
Come
and see what God has done,
how
awesome his works in man's behalf!
6
He
turned the sea into dry land,
they
passed through the waters on foot--
come,
let us rejoice in him.
7
He
rules forever by his power,
his
eyes watch the nations--
let
not the rebellious rise up against him.
Selah
8
Praise
our God, O peoples,
let
the sound of his praise be heard;
9
he
has preserved our lives
and
kept our feet from slipping.
10
For
you, O God, tested us;
you
refined us like silver.
11
You
brought us into prison
and
laid burdens on our backs.
12
You
let men ride over our heads; 4
we
went through fire and water,
but
you brought us to a place of abundance.
13
I
will come to your temple with burnt offerings
and
fulfill my vows to you--
14
vows
my lips promised and my mouth spoke
when
I was in trouble.
15
I
will sacrifice fat animals to you
and
an offering of rams;
I
will offer bulls and goats.
Selah
16
Come
and listen, all you who fear God;
let
me tell you what he has done for me.
17
I
cried out to him with my mouth;
his
praise was on my tongue.
18
If
I had cherished sin in my heart,
the
Lord would not have listened;
19
but
God has surely listened
and
heard my voice in prayer.
20
Praise
be to God,
who
has not rejected my prayer
or
withheld his love from me! 5
PSALMS:
96
1
Sing
to the LORD a new song;
sing
to the LORD, all the earth.
2
Sing
to the LORD, praise his name;
proclaim
his salvation day after day.
3
Declare
his glory among the nations,
his
marvelous deeds among all peoples.
4
For
great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
he
is to be feared above all gods.
5
For
all the gods of the nations are idols,
but
the LORD made the heavens.
6
Splendor
and majesty are before him;
strength
and glory are in his sanctuary.
7
Ascribe
to the LORD, O families of nations,
ascribe
to the LORD glory and strength.
8
Ascribe
to the LORD the glory due his name;
bring
an offering and come into his courts.
9
Worship
the LORD in the splendor of his A
holiness;
tremble
before him, all the earth.
10
Say
among the nations, "The
LORD reigns."
The
world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;
he
will judge the peoples with equity.
11
Let
the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
let
the sea resound, and all that is in it;
12
let
the fields be jubilant, and everything in them.
Then
all the trees of the forest will sing for joy;
13
they
will sing before the LORD, for he comes,
he
comes to judge the earth.
He
will judge the world in righteousness
and
the peoples in his truth. 6
PSALMS:
126
A
song of ascents.
1
When
the LORD brought back the captives to A
Zion,
we
were like men who dreamed. B
2
Our
mouths were filled with laughter,
our
tongues with songs of joy.
Then
it was said among the nations,
"The
LORD has done great things for them."
3
The
LORD has done great things for us,
and
we are filled with joy.
4
Restore
our fortunes, C
O LORD,
like
streams in the Negev.
5
Those
who sow in tears
will
reap with songs of joy.
6
He
who goes out weeping,
carrying
seed to sow,
will
return with songs of joy,
carrying
sheaves with him. 7
PROVERBS:
6
6
1
My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,
if
you have struck hands in pledge for another,
2
if
you have been trapped by what you said,
ensnared
by the words of your mouth,
3
then
do this, my son, to free yourself,
since
you have fallen into your neighbor's hands:
Go
and humble yourself;
press
your plea with your neighbor!
4
Allow
no sleep to your eyes,
no
slumber to your eyelids.
5
Free
yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
like
a bird from the snare of the fowler.
6
Go
to the ant, you sluggard;
consider
its ways and be wise!
7
It
has no commander,
no
overseer or ruler,
8
yet
it stores its provisions in summer
and
gathers its food at harvest.
9
How
long will you lie there, you sluggard?
When
will you get up from your sleep?
10
A
little sleep, a little slumber,
a
little folding of the hands to rest--
11
and
poverty will come on you like a bandit
and
scarcity like an armed man. A
12
A
scoundrel and villain,
who
goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13
who winks with his eye,
signals
with his feet
and
motions with his fingers,
14
who plots evil with deceit in his heart--
he
always stirs up dissension.
15
Therefore
disaster will overtake him in an instant; 8
he
will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.
16
There
are six things the LORD hates,
seven
that are detestable to him:
17
haughty
eyes,
a
lying tongue,
hands
that shed innocent blood,
18
a
heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet
that are quick to rush into evil,
19
a
false witness who pours out lies
and
a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
20
My
son, keep your father's commands
and
do not forsake your mother's teaching.
21
Bind
them upon your heart forever;
fasten
them around your neck.
22
When
you walk, they will guide you;
when
you sleep, they will watch over you;
when
you awake, they will speak to you.
23
For
these commands are a lamp,
this
teaching is a light,
and
the corrections of discipline
are
the way to life,
24
keeping
you from the immoral woman,
from
the smooth tongue of the wayward wife.
25
Do
not lust in your heart after her beauty
or
let her captivate you with her eyes,
26
for
the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread,
and
the adulteress preys upon your very life.
27
Can
a man scoop fire into his lap
without
his clothes being burned?
28
Can
a man walk on hot coals
without
his feet being scorched?
29
So
is he who sleeps with another man's wife; 9
no
one who touches her will go unpunished.
30
Men
do not despise a thief if he steals
to
satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
31
Yet
if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,
though
it costs him all the wealth of his house.
32
But
a man who commits adultery lacks judgment;
whoever
does so destroys himself.
33
Blows
and disgrace are his lot,
and
his shame will never be wiped away;
34
for
jealousy arouses a husband's fury,
and
he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
35
He
will not accept any compensation;
he
will refuse the bribe, however great it is. 10
OLD
TESTAMENT:
ISAIAH 45:1 - 48:11
11
"This
is what the LORD says--
the
Holy One of Israel, and its Maker:
Concerning
things to come,
do
you question me about my children,
or
give me orders about the work of my hands?
12
It is I who made the earth
and
created mankind upon it.
My
own hands stretched out the heavens;
I
marshaled their starry hosts.
13
I will raise up Cyrus B
in my righteousness:
I
will make all his ways straight.
He
will rebuild my city
and
set my exiles free,
but
not for a price or reward,
says
the LORD Almighty."
14
This
is what the LORD says:
"The
products of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush, C
and
those tall Sabeans--
they
will come over to you
and
will be yours;
they
will trudge behind you,
coming
over to you in chains.
They
will bow down before you
and
plead with you, saying,
`Surely
God is with you, and there is no other;
there
is no other god.'"
11
15
Truly
you are a God who hides himself,
O
God and Savior of Israel.
16
All
the makers of idols will be put to shame and disgraced;
they
will go off into disgrace together.
17
But
Israel will be saved by the LORD
with
an everlasting salvation;
you
will never be put to shame or disgraced,
to
ages everlasting.
18
For
this is what the LORD says--
he
who created the heavens,
he
is God;
he
who fashioned and made the earth,
he
founded it;
he
did not create it to be empty,
but
formed it to be inhabited--
he
says:
"I
am the LORD,
and
there is no other.
19
I have not spoken in secret,
from
somewhere in a land of darkness;
I
have not said to Jacob's descendants,
`Seek
me in vain.'
I,
the LORD, speak the truth;
I
declare what is right.
20
"Gather together and come; 12
assemble,
you fugitives from the nations.
Ignorant
are those who carry about idols of wood,
who
pray to gods that cannot save.
21
Declare
what is to be, present it--
let
them take counsel together.
Who
foretold this long ago,
who
declared it from the distant past?
Was
it not I, the LORD?
And
there is no God apart from me,
a
righteous God and a Savior;
there
is none but me.
22
"Turn
to me and be saved,
all
you ends of the earth;
for
I am God, and there is no other.
23
By myself I have sworn,
my
mouth has uttered in all integrity
a
word that will not be revoked:
Before
me every knee will bow;
by
me every tongue will swear.
24
They will say of me, `In the LORD alone
are
righteousness and strength.'
"
All
who have raged against him
will
come to him and be put to shame. 13
25
But
in the LORD all the descendants of Israel
will
be found righteous and will exult.
46
1
Bel bows down, Nebo stoops low;
their
idols are borne by beasts of burden. A
The
images that are carried about are burdensome,
a
burden for the weary.
2
They
stoop and bow down together;
unable
to rescue the burden,
they
themselves go off into captivity.
3
"Listen
to me, O house of Jacob,
all
you who remain of the house of Israel,
you
whom I have upheld since you were conceived,
an
have carried since your birth.
4
Even to your old age and gray hairs
I
am he, I am he who will sustain you.
I
have made you and I will carry you;
I
will sustain you and I will rescue you.
5
"To whom will you compare me or count me equal?
To
whom will you liken me that we may be compared?
6
Some pour out gold from their bags 14
and
weigh out silver on the scales;
they
hire a goldsmith to make it into a god,
and
they bow down and worship it.
7
They lift it to their shoulders and carry it;
they
set it up in its place, and there it stands.
From
that spot it cannot move.
Though
one cries out to it, it does not answer;
it
cannot save him from his troubles.
8
"Remember this, fix it in mind,
take
it to heart, you rebels.
9
Remember the former things, those of long ago;
I
am God, and there is no other;
I
am God, and there is none like me.
10
I make known the end from the beginning,
from
ancient times, what is still to come.
I
say: My purpose will stand,
and
I will do all that I please.
11
From the east I summon a bird of prey;
from
a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose.
What
I have said, that will I bring about;
what
I have planned, that will I do.
12
Listen to me, you stubborn-hearted,
you
who are far from righteousness.
13
I am bringing my righteousness near,
it
is not far away;
15
and
my salvation will not be delayed.
I
will grant salvation to Zion,
my
splendor to Israel.
47
1
"Go
down, sit in the dust,
Virgin
Daughter of Babylon;
sit
on the ground without a throne,
Daughter
of the Babylonians. A
No
more will you be called
tender
or delicate.
2
Take millstones and grind flour;
take
off your veil.
Lift
up your skirts, bare your legs,
and
wade through the streams.
3
Your nakedness will be exposed
and
your shame uncovered.
I
will take vengeance;
I
will spare no one."
4
Our
Redeemer--the LORD Almighty is his name--
is
the Holy One of Israel.
5
"Sit
in silence, go into darkness,
Daughter
of the Babylonians;
16
no
more will you be called
queen
of kingdoms.
6
I was angry with my people
and
desecrated my inheritance;
I
gave them into your hand,
and
you showed them no mercy.
Even
on the aged
you
laid a very heavy yoke.
7
You said, `I will continue forever--
the
eternal queen!'
But
you did not consider these things
or
reflect on what might happen.
8
"Now then, listen, you wanton creature,
lounging
in your security
and
saying to yourself,
`I
am, and there is none besides me.
I
will never be a widow
or
suffer the loss of children.'
9
Both of these will overtake you
in
a moment, on a single day:
loss
of children and widowhood.
They
will come upon you in full measure,
in
spite of your many sorceries 17
and
all your potent spells.
10
You have trusted in your wickedness
and
have said, `No one sees me.'
Your
wisdom and knowledge mislead you
when
you say to yourself,
`I
am, and there is none besides me.'
11
Disaster will come upon you,
and
you will not know how to conjure it away.
A
calamity will fall upon you
that
you cannot ward off with a ransom;
a
catastrophe you cannot foresee
will
suddenly come upon you.
12
"Keep on, then, with your magic spells
and
with your many sorceries,
which
you have labored at since childhood.
Perhaps
you will succeed,
perhaps
you will cause terror.
13
All the counsel you have received has only worn you out!
Let
your astrologers come forward,
those
stargazers who make predictions month by month,
let
them save you from what is coming upon you.
14
Surely they are like stubble;
the
fire will burn them up.
They
cannot even save themselves 18
from
the power of the flame.
Here
are no coals to warm anyone;
here
is no fire to sit by.
15
That is all they can do for you--
these
you have labored with
and
trafficked with since childhood.
Each
of them goes on in his error;
there
is not one that can save you.
48
1
"Listen to this, O house of Jacob,
you
who are called by the name of Israel
and
come from the line of Judah,
you
who take oaths in the name of the LORD
and
invoke the God of Israel--
but
not in truth or righteousness--
2
you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city
and
rely on the God of Israel--
the
LORD Almighty is his name:
3
I foretold the former things long ago,
my
mouth announced them and I made them known;
then
suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.
4
For I knew how stubborn you were;
the
sinews of your neck were iron,
your
forehead was bronze. 19
5
Therefore I told you these things long ago;
before
they happened I announced them to you
so
that you could not say,
`My
idols did them;
my
wooden image and metal god ordained them.'
6
You have heard these things; look at them all.
Will
you not admit them?
"From
now on I will tell you of new things,
of
hidden things unknown to you.
7
They are created now, and not long ago;
you
have not heard of them before today.
So
you cannot say,
`Yes,
I knew of them.'
8
You
have neither heard nor understood;
from
of old your ear has not been open.
Well
do I know how treacherous you are;
you
were called a rebel from birth.
9
For
my own name's sake I delay my wrath;
for
the sake of my praise I hold it back from you,
so
as not to cut you off.
10
See,
I have refined you, though not as silver;
I
have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
11For
my own sake, for my own sake, I do this.
How
can I let myself be defamed?
I
will not yield my glory to another.
20
NEW
TESTAMENT:
EPHESIANS 4:1 - 16
4
1
As
a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of
the calling you have received. 2
Be
completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in
love.
3
Make
every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of
peace.
4
There
is one body and one Spirit-- just as you were called to one hope when
you were called—5
one
Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6
one
God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
7
But
to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8
This
is why it A
says:
"When
he ascended on high,
he
led captives in his train
and
gave gifts to men."
B
9
(What
does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to
the lower, earthly regions C?
10
He
who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the
heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11
It
was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be
evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12
to
prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ
may be built up
13
until
we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of
God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness
of Christ.
14
Then
we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and
blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and
craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15
Instead,
speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him
who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16
From
him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting
ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its
work. 21

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
