OLD
TESTAMENT: 1 CHRONICLES 22:1 - 23:32
NEW
TESTAMENT: ROMANS 3:9 - 31
PSALMS: 26
Of
David.
1
Vindicate me, O LORD,
for
I have led a blameless life;
I
have trusted in the LORD
without
wavering.
2
Test me, O LORD, and try me,
examine
my heart and my mind;
3
for your love is ever before me,
and
I walk continually in your truth.
4
I do not sit with deceitful men,
nor
do I consort with hypocrites;
5
I abhor the assembly of evildoers
and
refuse to sit with the wicked.
6
I wash my hands in innocence,
and
go about your altar, O LORD,
7
proclaiming aloud your praise
and
telling of all your wonderful deeds.
8
I love the house where you live, O LORD,
the
place where your glory dwells.
9
Do not take away my soul along with sinners,
my
life with bloodthirsty men,
10
in whose hands are wicked schemes,
whose
right hands are full of bribes.
11
But I lead a blameless life;
redeem
me and be merciful to me.
12 My
feet stand on level ground;
in
the great assembly I will praise the LORD. [1]
PSALMS: 56
For
the director of music. To the tune of "A Dove on Distant Oaks." Of
David. A miktam. A When the Philistines had seized him in
Gath.
1
Be merciful to me, O God, for men hotly pursue me;
all
day long they press their attack.
2
My slanderers pursue me all day long;
many
are attacking me in their pride.
3
When I am afraid,
I
will trust in you.
4
In God, whose word I praise,
in
God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What
can mortal man do to me?
5
All day long they twist my words;
they
are always plotting to harm me.
6
They conspire, they lurk,
they
watch my steps,
eager
to take my life.
7
On no account let them escape;
in
your anger, O God, bring down the nations.
8
Record my lament;
list
my tears on your scroll B--
are
they not in your record?
9
Then my enemies will turn back
when
I call for help.
By
this I will know that God is for me.
10
In God, whose word I praise,
in
the LORD, whose word I praise--
11
in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What
can man do to me? [2]
12
I am under vows to you, O God;
I
will present my thank offerings to you.
13
For you have delivered me C from death
and
my feet from stumbling,
that
I may walk before God
in
the light of life. D [3]
PSALMS: 86
A
prayer of David.
1
Hear, O LORD, and answer me,
for
I am poor and needy.
2
Guard my life, for I am devoted to you.
You
are my God; save your servant
who
trusts in you.
3
Have mercy on me, O Lord,
for
I call to you all day long.
4
Bring joy to your servant,
for
to you, O Lord,
I
lift up my soul.
5
You are forgiving and good, O Lord,
abounding
in love to all who call to you.
6
Hear my prayer, O LORD;
listen
to my cry for mercy.
7
In the day of my trouble I will call to you,
for
you will answer me.
8
Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord;
no
deeds can compare with yours.
9
All the nations you have made
will
come and worship before you, O Lord;
they
will bring glory to your name.
10
For you are great and do marvelous deeds;
you
alone are God. [4]
11
Teach me your way, O LORD,
and
I will walk in your truth;
give
me an undivided heart,
that
I may fear your name.
12
I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart;
I
will glorify your name forever.
13
For great is your love toward me;
you
have delivered me from the depths of the grave. A
14
The arrogant are attacking me, O God;
a
band of ruthless men seeks my life--
men
without regard for you.
15
But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,
slow
to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
16
Turn to me and have mercy on me;
grant
your strength to your servant
and
save the son of your maidservant. B
17
Give me a sign of your goodness,
that
my enemies may see it and be put to shame,
for
you, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me. [5]
PSALMS: 116
1
I love the LORD, for he heard my voice;
he
heard my cry for mercy.
2
Because he turned his ear to me,
I
will call on him as long as I live.
3
The cords of death entangled me,
the
anguish of the grave A came upon me;
I
was overcome by trouble and sorrow.
4
Then I called on the name of the LORD:
"O
LORD, save me!"
5
The LORD is gracious and righteous;
our
God is full of compassion.
6
The LORD protects the simplehearted;
when
I was in great need, he saved me.
7
Be at rest once more, O my soul,
for
the LORD has been good to you.
8
For you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death,
my
eyes from tears,
my
feet from stumbling,
9
that I may walk before the LORD
in
the land of the living.
10
I believed; therefore B I said,
"I
am greatly afflicted."
11
And in my dismay I said,
"All
men are liars."
12
How can I repay the LORD
for
all his goodness to me?
13
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and
call on the name of the LORD.
14
I will fulfill my vows to the LORD
in
the presence of all his people. [6]
15
Precious in the sight of the LORD
is
the death of his saints.
16
O LORD, truly I am your servant;
I
am your servant, the son of your maidservant C;
you
have freed me from my chains.
17
I will sacrifice a thank offering to you
and
call on the name of the LORD.
18
I will fulfill my vows to the LORD
in
the presence of all his people,
19
in the courts of the house of the LORD--
in
your midst, O Jerusalem.
Praise
the LORD. D [7]
PSALMS: 146
1
Praise the LORD. A
Praise
the LORD, O my soul.
2
I will praise the LORD all my life;
I
will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
3
Do not put your trust in princes,
in
mortal men, who cannot save.
4
When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on
that very day their plans come to nothing.
5
Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose
hope is in the LORD his God,
6the
Maker of heaven and earth,
the
sea, and everything in them--
the
LORD, who remains faithful forever.
7
He upholds the cause of the oppressed
and
gives food to the hungry.
The
LORD sets prisoners free,
8
the LORD gives sight to the blind,
the
LORD lifts up those who are bowed down,
the
LORD loves the righteous.
9
The LORD watches over the alien
and
sustains the fatherless and the widow,
but
he frustrates the ways of the wicked.
10
The LORD reigns forever,
your
God, O Zion, for all generations.
Praise
the LORD. [8]
PROVERBS: 26
26
1 Like snow in summer or
rain in harvest,
honor
is not fitting for a fool.
2
Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow,
an
undeserved curse does not come to rest.
3
A whip for the horse, a halter for the donkey,
and
a rod for the backs of fools!
4
Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
or
you will be like him yourself.
5
Answer a fool according to his folly,
or
he will be wise in his own eyes.
6
Like cutting off one's feet or drinking violence
is
the sending of a message by the hand of a fool.
7
Like a lame man's legs that hang limp
is
a proverb in the mouth of a fool.
8
Like tying a stone in a sling
is
the giving of honor to a fool.
9
Like a thornbush in a drunkard's hand
is
a proverb in the mouth of a fool.
10
Like an archer who wounds at random
is
he who hires a fool or any passer-by.
11
As a dog returns to its vomit,
so
a fool repeats his folly.
There
is more hope for a fool than for him.
13
The sluggard says, "There is a lion in the road,
a
fierce lion roaming the streets!"
14
As a door turns on its hinges,
so
a sluggard turns on his bed.
15
The sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
he
is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.
16
The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes
than
seven men who answer discreetly.
17
Like one who seizes a dog by the ears
is
a passer-by who meddles in a quarrel not his own.
18
Like a madman shooting
firebrands
or deadly arrows
19
is a man who deceives his neighbor
and
says, "I was only joking!"
20
Without wood a fire goes out;
without
gossip a quarrel dies down.
21
As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire,
so
is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. [10]
22
The words of a gossip are like choice morsels;
they
go down to a man's inmost parts.
23
Like a coating of glaze A over earthenware
are
fervent lips with an evil heart.
24
A malicious man disguises himself with his lips,
but
in his heart he harbors deceit.
25
Though his speech is charming, do not believe him,
for
seven abominations fill his heart.
26
His malice may be concealed by deception,
but
his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
27
If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it;
if
a man rolls a stone, it will roll back on him.
28
A lying tongue hates those it hurts,
and
a flattering mouth works ruin. [11]
OLD TESTAMENT: 1 CHRONICLES 22:1 - 23:32
22 1
Then David said, "The house of the LORD God is to
be here, and also the altar of burnt offering for Israel."
2 So
David gave orders to assemble the aliens living in Israel, and from among them
he appointed stonecutters to prepare dressed stone for building the house of
God. 3 He provided a large amount of iron to make nails for the
doors of the gateways and for the fittings, and more bronze than could be
weighed. 4 He also provided more cedar logs than could be counted,
for the Sidonians and Tyrians had brought large numbers of them to David.
5 David
said, "My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be
built for the LORD should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor in the
sight of all the nations. Therefore I will make preparations for it." So
David made extensive preparations before his death.
6 Then
he called for his son Solomon and charged him to build a house for the LORD,
the God of Israel. 7 David said to Solomon: "My son, I had it
in my heart to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God. 8 But
this word of the LORD came to me: `You have shed much
blood and have fought many wars. You are not to build a house for my Name,
because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight. 9 But you will have a
son who will be a man of peace and rest, and I will give him rest from all his
enemies on every side. His name will be Solomon, A and I will grant Israel peace and quiet during his reign. 10 He is the one who
will build a house for my Name. He will be my son, and I will be his father.
And I will [12] establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.'
11"Now,
my son, the LORD be with you, and may you have success and build the house of
the LORD your God, as he said you would. 12May the LORD give you
discretion and understanding when he puts you in command over Israel, so that
you may keep the law of the LORD your God. 13Then you will have
success if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the LORD gave
Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged.
14 "I
have taken great pains to provide for the temple of the LORD a hundred thousand
talents B of gold, a million talents C of silver,
quantities of bronze and iron too great to be weighed, and wood and stone. And
you may add to them. 15 You have many workmen: stonecutters, masons
and carpenters, as well as men skilled in every kind of work 16 in
gold and silver, bronze and iron--craftsmen beyond number. Now begin the work,
and the LORD be with you."
17 Then
David ordered all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon. 18 He
said to them, "Is not the LORD your God with you? And has he not granted
you rest on every side? For he has handed the inhabitants of the land over to
me, and the land is subject to the LORD and to his people. 19 Now
devote your heart and soul to seeking the LORD your God. Begin to build the
sanctuary of the LORD God, so that you may bring the ark of the covenant of the
LORD and the sacred articles belonging to God into the temple that will be
built for the Name of the LORD." [13]
23 1
When David was old and full of years, he made his son
Solomon king over Israel.
2 He
also gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and
Levites.
3 The
Levites thirty years old or more were counted, and the total number of men was
thirty-eight thousand. 4 David said, "Of these, twenty-four
thousand are to supervise the work of the temple of the LORD and six thousand
are to be officials and judges. 5 Four thousand are to be
gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the LORD with the musical
instruments I have provided for that purpose."
6 David
divided the Levites into groups corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon,
Kohath and Merari.
7 Belonging
to the Gershonites:
Ladan and Shimei.
8 The
sons of Ladan:
Jehiel the first, Zetham
and Joel--three in all.
9 The
sons of Shimei:
Shelomoth, Haziel and
Haran--three in all.
These were the heads of
the families of Ladan.
10 And
the sons of Shimei:
Jahath, Ziza,A
Jeush and Beriah.
These were the sons of
Shimei--four in all.
11 Jahath
was the first and Ziza the second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons;
so they were counted as one family with one assignment. [14]
12 The sons of Kohath:
Amram, Izhar, Hebron and
Uzziel--four in all.
13 The
sons of Amram:
Aaron and Moses.
Aaron was set apart, he
and his descendants forever, to consecrate the most holy things, to offer
sacrifices before the LORD, to minister before him and to pronounce blessings
in his name forever. 14 The sons of Moses the man of God were
counted as part of the tribe of Levi.
15 The
sons of Moses:
Gershom and Eliezer.
16 The
descendants of Gershom:
Shubael was the first.
17 The
descendants of Eliezer:
Rehabiah was the first.
Eliezer had no other
sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very numerous.
18 The
sons of Izhar:
Shelomith was the first.
19 The
sons of Hebron:
Jeriah the first,
Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth.
20 The
sons of Uzziel:
Micah the first and
Isshiah the second.
21The sons of Merari:
Mahli and Mushi. [15]
The sons of Mahli:
Eleazar and Kish.
22 Eleazar
died without having sons: he had only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of
Kish, married them.
23 The
sons of Mushi:
Mahli, Eder and
Jerimoth--three in all.
24 These
were the descendants of Levi by their families--the heads of families as they
were registered under their names and counted individually, that is, the
workers twenty years old or more who served in the temple of the LORD. 25 For
David had said, "Since the LORD, the God of Israel, has granted rest to
his people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem forever, 26 the
Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the articles used in
its service." 27 According to the last instructions of David,
the Levites were counted from those twenty years old or more.
28 The
duty of the Levites was to help Aaron's descendants in the service of the
temple of the LORD: to be in charge of the courtyards, the side rooms, the
purification of all sacred things and the performance of other duties at the
house of God. 29 They were in charge of the bread set out on the
table, the flour for the grain offerings, the unleavened wafers, the baking and
the mixing, and all measurements of quantity and size. 30 They were
also to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD. They were to do the
same in [16]
the evening
31 and
whenever burnt offerings were presented to the LORD on Sabbaths and at New Moon
festivals and at appointed feasts. They were to serve before the LORD regularly
in the proper number and in the way prescribed for them.
32 And
so the Levites carried out their responsibilities for the Tent of Meeting, for
the Holy Place and, under their brothers the descendants of Aaron, for the
service of the temple of the LORD. [17]
NEW TESTAMENT: ROMANS 3:9 - 31
9 What
shall we conclude then? Are we any better B? Not at all! We have
already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. 10
As it is written:
"There is no one righteous, not even one;
11 there is no one who
understands,
no one who
seeks God.
12 All have
turned away,
they have
together become worthless;
there is
no one who does good,
not even
one." C
13 "Their throats are open graves;
their
tongues practice deceit." D
"The poison of vipers is on their lips." E
14
"Their mouths are full of cursing and
bitterness." F
15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 ruin and misery mark their
ways,
17 and the
way of peace they do not know." G
18 "There is no
fear of God before their eyes."H
19 Now
we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so
that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.
20 Therefore
no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather,
through the law we become conscious of sin.
21 But
now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the
Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This [18]
righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.
There is no difference, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the
redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented him as a
sacrifice of atonement, I through faith in his blood. He did this to
demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins
committed beforehand unpunished—26 he did it to demonstrate his
justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those
who have faith in Jesus.
27 Where,
then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the
law? No, but on that of faith. 28 For we maintain that a man is
justified by faith apart from observing the law. 29 Is God the God
of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since
there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the
uncircumcised through that same faith. 31 Do we, then, nullify the
law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law. [19]
