Of
David.
1
The LORD is my light and my salvation--
whom
shall I fear?
The
LORD is the stronghold of my life--
of
whom shall I be afraid?
2
When evil men advance against me
to
devour my flesh, A
when
my enemies and my foes attack me,
they
will stumble and fall.
3
Though an army besiege me,
my
heart will not fear;
though
war break out against me,
even
then will I be confident.
4
One thing I ask of the LORD,
this
is what I seek:
that
I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all
the days of my life,
to
gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and
to seek him in his temple.
5
For in the day of trouble
he
will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he
will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle
and
set me high upon a rock.
6
Then my head will be exalted
above
the enemies who surround me;
at
his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy;
I
will sing and make music to the LORD. [1]
7
Hear my voice when I call, O LORD;
be
merciful to me and answer me.
8
My heart says of you, "Seek his B
face!"
Your
face, LORD, I will seek.
9
Do not hide your face from me,
do
not turn your servant away in anger;
you
have been my helper.
Do
not reject me or forsake me,
O
God my Savior.
10
Though my father and mother forsake me,
the
LORD will receive me.
11
Teach me your way, O LORD;
lead
me in a straight path
because
of my oppressors.
12
Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes,
for
false witnesses rise up against me,
breathing
out violence.
13
I am still confident of this:
I
will see the goodness of the LORD
in
the land of the living.
14
Wait for the LORD;
be
strong and take heart
and
wait for the LORD.
PSALMS: 57
1
Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me,
for
in you my soul takes refuge.
I
will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until
the disaster has passed.
2
I cry out to God Most High,
to
God, who fulfills his purpose for me.
3
He sends from heaven and saves me,
rebuking
those who hotly pursue me;
Selah
God
sends his love and his faithfulness.
4
I am in the midst of lions;
I
lie among ravenous beasts--
men
whose teeth are spears and arrows,
whose
tongues are sharp swords.
5
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let
your glory be over all the earth.
6
They spread a net for my feet--
I
was bowed down in distress.
They
dug a pit in my path--
but
they have fallen into it themselves.
Selah
[2]
7
My heart is steadfast, O God,
my
heart is steadfast;
I
will sing and make music.
8
Awake, my soul!
Awake,
harp and lyre!
I
will awaken the dawn.
9
I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations;
I
will sing of you among the peoples.
10
For great is your love, reaching to the heavens;
your
faithfulness reaches to the skies.
11
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let
your glory be over all the earth. [3]
PSALMS: 87
Of
the Sons of Korah. A psalm. A song.
1
He has set his foundation on the holy mountain;
2
the LORD loves the gates of Zion
more
than all the dwellings of Jacob.
3
Glorious things are said of you,
O
city of God:
Selah
4
"I will record Rahab A and Babylon
among those who acknowledge me--
Philistia too, and Tyre, along with Cush B--
and will say, `This C
one was born in Zion.'"
5
Indeed, of Zion it will be said,
"This one and that one were born in her,
and the Most High himself will establish her."
6
The LORD will write in the register of the peoples:
"This one was born in Zion."
Selah
7
As they make music they will sing,
"All my fountains are in you." [4]
PSALMS: 117
1
Praise the LORD, all you nations;
extol
him, all you peoples.
2
For great is his love toward us,
and
the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.
Praise
the LORD. A [5]
PSALMS: 147
1
Praise the LORD. A
How
good it is to sing praises to our God,
how
pleasant and fitting to praise him!
2
The LORD builds up Jerusalem;
he
gathers the exiles of Israel.
3
He heals the brokenhearted
and
binds up their wounds.
4
He determines the number of the stars
and
calls them each by name.
5
Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
his
understanding has no limit.
6
The LORD sustains the humble
but
casts the wicked to the ground.
7
Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving;
make
music to our God on the harp.
8
He covers the sky with clouds;
he
supplies the earth with rain
and
makes grass grow on the hills.
9
He provides food for the cattle
and
for the young ravens when they call.
10
His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse,
nor
his delight in the legs of a man;
11
the LORD delights in those who fear him,
who
put their hope in his unfailing love. [6]
12
Extol the LORD, O Jerusalem;
praise
your God, O Zion,
13
for he strengthens the bars of your gates
and
blesses your people within you.
14
He grants peace to your borders
and
satisfies you with the finest of wheat.
15
He sends his command to the earth;
his
word runs swiftly.
16
He spreads the snow like wool
and
scatters the frost like ashes.
17
He hurls down his hail like pebbles.
Who
can withstand his icy blast?
18
He sends his word and melts them;
he
stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.
19
He has revealed his word to Jacob,
his
laws and decrees to Israel.
20
He has done this for no other nation;
they
do not know his laws.
Praise
the LORD. [7]
PROVERBS: 27
27
1 Do not boast about
tomorrow,
for
you do not know what a day may bring forth.
2
Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;
someone
else, and not your own lips.
3
Stone is heavy and sand a burden,
but
provocation by a fool is heavier than both.
4
Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming,
but
who can stand before jealousy?
5
Better is open rebuke
than
hidden love.
6
Wounds from a friend can be trusted,
but
an enemy multiplies kisses.
7
He who is full loathes honey,
but
to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.
8
Like a bird that strays from its nest
is
a man who strays from his home.
9
Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart,
and
the pleasantness of one's friend springs from his earnest counsel.
10
Do not forsake your friend and the friend of your
father,
and
do not go to your brother's house when disaster strikes you--
better
a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.
11
Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart;
then
I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt. [8]
12
The prudent see danger and take refuge,
but
the simple keep going and suffer for it.
13
Take the garment of one who puts up security for a
stranger;
hold
it in pledge if he does it for a wayward woman.
14
If a man loudly blesses his neighbor early in the
morning,
it
will be taken as a curse.
15
A quarrelsome wife is like
a
constant dripping on a rainy day;
16
restraining her is like restraining the wind
or
grasping oil with the hand.
17
As iron sharpens iron,
so
one man sharpens another.
18
He who tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,
and
he who looks after his master will be honored.
19
As water reflects a face,
so
a man's heart reflects the man.
20
Death and Destruction A are never
satisfied,
and
neither are the eyes of man.
21
The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,
but
man is tested by the praise he receives.
22
Though you grind a fool in a mortar,
grinding
him like grain with a pestle,
you
will not remove his folly from him. [9]
23
Be sure you know the condition of your flocks,
give
careful attention to your herds;
24
for riches do not endure forever,
and
a crown is not secure for all generations.
25
When the hay is removed and new growth appears
and
the grass from the hills is gathered in,
26
the lambs will provide you with clothing,
and
the goats with the price of a field.
27
You will have plenty of goats' milk
to
feed you and your family
and
to nourish your servant girls. [10]
OLD TESTAMENT: 1 CHRONICLES 24:1 - 26:11
24 1
These were the divisions of the sons of Aaron:
The sons of Aaron were
Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 2 But Nadab and Abihu died before
their father did, and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as the
priests. 3 With the help of Zadok a descendant of Eleazar and
Ahimelech a descendant of Ithamar, David separated them into divisions for
their appointed order of ministering. 4 A larger number of leaders
were found among Eleazar's descendants than among Ithamar's, and they were
divided accordingly: sixteen heads of families from Eleazar's descendants and
eight heads of families from Ithamar's descendants. 5 They divided
them impartially by drawing lots, for there were officials of the sanctuary and
officials of God among the descendants of both Eleazar and Ithamar.
6 The
scribe Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence
of the king and of the officials: Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar
and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites--one family being
taken from Eleazar and then one from Ithamar.
7 The
first lot fell to Jehoiarib,
the second to Jedaiah,
8 the
third to Harim,
the fourth to Seorim,
9 the
fifth to Malkijah,
the sixth to Mijamin,
10 the
seventh to Hakkoz,
the eighth to Abijah, [11]
11the
ninth to Jeshua,

the twelfth to Jakim,
13 the

14 the

the sixteenth to Immer,
15 the

16 the
nineteenth to Pethahiah,
the twentieth to Jehezkel,
17 the
twenty-first to Jakin,
the twenty-second to
Gamul,
18 the
twenty-third to Delaiah
and the twenty-fourth to
Maaziah.
19 This
was their appointed order of ministering when they entered the temple of the
LORD, according to the regulations prescribed for them by their forefather
Aaron, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded him.
20 As
for the rest of the descendants of Levi:
from the sons of Amram:
Shubael;
from the sons of
Shubael: Jehdeiah.
21 As
for Rehabiah, from his sons:
Isshiah was the first. [12]
22 From
the Izharites: Shelomoth;
from the sons of
Shelomoth: Jahath.
23T
he sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, A Amariah the second, Jahaziel
the third and Jekameam the fourth.
24 The
son of Uzziel: Micah;
from the sons of Micah: Shamir.
25 The
brother of Micah: Isshiah;
from the sons of
Isshiah: Zechariah.
26 The
sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi.
The son of Jaaziah:
Beno.
27 The
sons of Merari:
from Jaaziah: Beno,
Shoham, Zaccur and Ibri.
28 From
Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons.
29 From
Kish: the son of Kish:
Jerahmeel.
30 And
the sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder and Jerimoth.
25 1
David, together with the commanders of the army, set
apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying,
accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men who
performed this service:
2 From
the sons of Asaph:
Zaccur, Joseph,
Nethaniah and Asarelah. The sons of Asaph were under the supervision of Asaph,
who prophesied under the king's supervision. 3 As for Jeduthun, from
his sons:
Gedaliah, Zeri,
Jeshaiah, Shimei, A Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six in all, under the
supervision of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied, using the harp in
thanking and praising the LORD. 4 As for Heman, from his sons:
Bukkiah, Mattaniah,
Uzziel, Shubael and Jerimoth; Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti and
Romamti-Ezer; Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir and Mahazioth. 5 All
these were sons of Heman the king's seer. They were given him through the
promises of God to exalt him. B God gave Heman fourteen sons and
three daughters.
6 All
these men were under the supervision of their fathers for the music of the
temple of the LORD, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the
house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the supervision of the king.
7 Along with their relatives--all of them trained and skilled in
music for the LORD--they numbered 288.

The divisions of the gatekeepers:
From the Korahites:
Meshelemiah son of Kore, one of the sons of Asaph.
2 Meshelemiah
had sons:
Zechariah the firstborn,
Jediael the second,
Zebadiah the third,
Jathniel the fourth,
3Elam
the fifth,
Jehohanan the sixth
and Eliehoenai the
seventh.
4 Obed-Edom
also had sons:
Shemaiah the firstborn,
Jehozabad the second,
Joah the third,
Sacar the fourth,
Nethanel the fifth,
5 Ammiel
the sixth,
Issachar the seventh
and Peullethai the
eighth.
(For God had blessed
Obed-Edom.) [16]
6 His
son Shemaiah also had sons, who were leaders in their father's family because
they were very capable men. 7 The sons of Shemaiah: Othni, Rephael,
Obed and Elzabad; his relatives Elihu and Semakiah were also able men. 8 All
these were descendants of Obed-Edom; they and their sons and their relatives
were capable men with the strength to do the work--descendants of Obed-Edom, 62
in all.
9 Meshelemiah
had sons and relatives, who were able men--18 in all.
10 Hosah
the Merarite had sons: Shimri the first (although he was not the firstborn, his
father had appointed him the first), 11 Hilkiah the second, Tabaliah
the third and Zechariah the fourth. The sons and relatives of Hosah were 13 in
all. [17]
NEW TESTAMENT: ROMANS 4:1 - 12
4 1
What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather,
discovered in this matter? 2 If, in fact, Abraham was justified by
works, he had something to boast about--but not before God. 3 What
does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him
as righteousness." A
4 Now
when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an
obligation. 5 However, to the man who does not work but trusts God
who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness. 6 David
says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God
credits righteousness apart from works:
7 "Blessed
are they
whose transgressions are
forgiven,
whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed
is the man
whose sin the Lord will
never count against him." B
9 Is
this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We
have been saying that Abraham's faith was credited to him as righteousness. 10
Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was
circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before! 11 And he
received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness that he had by
faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who
believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be
credited to them. [18]
12 And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are
circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father
Abraham had before he was circumcised. [19]
