Why,
A
O LORD, do you stand far off?
Why
do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
2
In
his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,
who
are caught in the schemes he devises.
3
He
boasts of the cravings of his heart;
he
blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
4
In
his pride the wicked does not seek him;
in
all his thoughts there is no room for God.
5
His
ways are always prosperous;
he
is haughty and your laws are far from him;
he
sneers at all his enemies.
6
He
says to himself, "Nothing will shake me;
I'll
always be happy and never have trouble."
7
His
mouth is full of curses and lies and threats;
trouble
and evil are under his tongue.
8
He
lies in wait near the villages;
from
ambush he murders the innocent,
watching
in secret for his victims.
9
He
lies in wait like a lion in cover;
he
lies in wait to catch the helpless;
he
catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
10
His
victims are crushed, they collapse;
they
fall under his strength.

He
says to himself, "God has forgotten;
he
covers his face and never sees." 1

Arise,
LORD! Lift up your hand, O God.

not forget the helpless.

Why
does the wicked man revile God?
Why
does he say to himself,
"He
won't call me to account"?

But
you, O God, do see trouble and grief;

consider it to take it in hand.
The
victim commits himself to you;

are the helper of the fatherless.

Break
the arm of the wicked and evil man;
call
him to account for his wickedness
that
would not be found out.

The

I
waited patiently for the LORD;
he
turned to me and heard my cry.
2
He
lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out
of the mud and mire;
he
set my feet on a rock
and
gave me a firm place to stand.

He
put a new song in my mouth,
a
hymn of praise to our God.
Many
will see and fear
and
put their trust in the LORD.
4
Blessed
is the man
who
makes the LORD his trust,
who
does not look to the proud,
to
those who turn aside to false gods. A
5
Many,
O LORD my God,
are
the wonders you have done.
The
things you planned for us
no
one can recount to you;
were
I to speak and tell of them,
they
would be too many to declare.

Sacrifice
and offering you did not desire,
but
my ears you have pierced BC;
burnt

did not require.

Ill-gotten
treasures are of no value,

righteousness delivers from death.

LORD does not let the righteous go hungry
but
he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
4
Lazy
hands make a man poor,
but
diligent hands bring wealth.
5
He
who gathers crops in summer is a wise son,
but
he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.

Blessings
crown the head of the righteous,
but
violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. A

The
memory of the righteous will be a blessing,
but
the name of the wicked will rot.

The
wise in heart accept commands,
but
a chattering fool comes to ruin.

The
man of integrity walks securely,
but
he who takes crooked paths will be found out.

Elihu said:

"Hear
my words, you wise men;
listen
to me, you men of learning.
3
For
the ear tests words
as
the tongue tastes food.
4
Let
us discern for ourselves what is right;
let
us learn together what is good.
5
"Job
says, `I am innocent,
but
God denies me justice.
6
Although
I am right,
I
am considered a liar;
although
I am guiltless,
his
arrow inflicts an incurable wound.'
7
What
man is like Job,
who
drinks scorn like water?
8
He
keeps company with evildoers;
he
associates with wicked men.
9
For
he says, `It profits a man nothing
when
he tries to please God.'
10
"So
listen to me, you men of understanding.
Far
be it from God to do evil,
from
the Almighty to do wrong.
11
He
repays a man for what he has done;
he
brings upon him what his conduct deserves.
12
It
is unthinkable that God would do wrong, 12
that
the Almighty would pervert justice.
13
Who
appointed him over the earth?
Who
put him in charge of the whole world?
14
If
it were his intention
and
he withdrew his spirit A
and breath,
15
all
mankind would perish together
and
man would return to the dust.
16
"If
you have understanding, hear this;
listen
to what I say.
17
Can
he who hates justice govern?
Will
you condemn the just and mighty One?
18
Is
he not the One who says to kings, `You are worthless,'
and
to nobles, `You are wicked,'
19
who
shows no partiality to princes
and
does not favor the rich over the poor,
for
they are all the work of his hands?
20
They
die in an instant, in the middle of the night;
the
people are shaken and they pass away;
the
mighty are removed without human hand.
21
"His
eyes are on the ways of men;
he
sees their every step.
22
There
is no dark place, no deep shadow,
where
evildoers can hide.
23
God
has no need to examine men further, 13
that
they should come before him for judgment.
24
Without
inquiry he shatters the mighty
and
sets up others in their place.
25
Because
he takes note of their deeds,
he
overthrows them in the night and they are crushed.
26
He
punishes them for their wickedness
where
everyone can see them,
27
because
they turned from following him
and
had no regard for any of his ways.
28
They
caused the cry of the poor to come before him,
so
that he heard the cry of the needy.
29
But
if he remains silent, who can condemn him?
If
he hides his face, who can see him?
Yet
he is over man and nation alike,
30
to
keep a godless man from ruling,
from
laying snares for the people.
31
"Suppose
a man says to God,
`I
am guilty but will offend no more.
32
Teach
me what I cannot see;
if
I have done wrong, I will not do so again.'
33
Should
God then reward you on your terms,
when
you refuse to repent?
You
must decide, not I;
so
tell me what you know. 14
34
"Men
of understanding declare,
wise
men who hear me say to me,
35
`Job
speaks without knowledge;
his
words lack insight.'
36
Oh,
that Job might be tested to the utmost
for
answering like a wicked man!
37
To
his sin he adds rebellion;
scornfully
he claps his hands among us
and
multiplies his words against God."

Then
Elihu said:
you
think this is just?
You
say, `I will be cleared by God. A'
3
Yet
you ask him, `What profit is it to me, B
and
what do I gain by not sinning?'
4
"I
would like to reply to you
and
to your friends with you.
5
Look
up at the heavens and see;
gaze
at the clouds so high above you.
6If
you sin, how does that affect him?
If
your sins are many, what does that do to him? 15
7
If
you are righteous, what do you give to him,
or
what does he receive from your hand?
8
Your
wickedness affects only a man like yourself,
and
your righteousness only the sons of men.
9
"Men
cry out under a load of oppression;
they
plead for relief from the arm of the powerful.
10
But
no one says, `Where is God my Maker,
who
gives songs in the night,
11
who
teaches more to us than to C
the beasts of the earth
and
makes us wiser thanD
the birds of the air?'
12
He
does not answer when men cry out
because
of the arrogance of the wicked.
13
Indeed,
God does not listen to their empty plea;
the
Almighty pays no attention to it.
14
How
much less, then, will he listen
when
you say that you do not see him,
that
your case is before him
and
you must wait for him,
15
and
further, that his anger never punishes
and
he does not take the least notice of wickedness. E
16
So
Job opens his mouth with empty talk;
without
knowledge he multiplies words." 16

Elihu
continued:
2
"Bear
with me a little longer and I will show you
that
there is more to be said in God's behalf.
3
I
get my knowledge from afar;
I
will ascribe justice to my Maker.
4
Be
assured that my words are not false;
one
perfect in knowledge is with you.
5
"God
is mighty, but does not despise men;
he
is mighty, and firm in his purpose.
6
He
does not keep the wicked alive
but
gives the afflicted their rights.
7
He
does not take his eyes off the righteous;
he
enthrones them with kings
and
exalts them forever.
8
But
if men are bound in chains,
held
fast by cords of affliction,
9
he
tells them what they have done--
that
they have sinned arrogantly.
10
He
makes them listen to correction
and
commands them to repent of their evil.
11
If
they obey and serve him,
they
will spend the rest of their days in prosperity
and
their years in contentment.
12
But
if they do not listen,
and
die without knowledge.
13
"The
godless in heart harbor resentment;
even
when he fetters them, they do not cry for help.
14
They
die in their youth,
among
male prostitutes of the shrines.
15
But
those who suffer he delivers in their suffering;
he
speaks to them in their affliction.
16
"He
is wooing you from the jaws of distress
to
a spacious place free from restriction,
to
the comfort of your table laden with choice food.
17
But
now you are laden with the judgment due the wicked;
judgment
and justice have taken hold of you.
18
Be
careful that no one entices you by riches;
do
not let a large bribe turn you aside.
19
Would
your wealth
or
even all your mighty efforts
sustain
you so you would not be in distress?
20
Do
not long for the night,
to
drag people away from their homes. B
21
Beware
of turning to evil,
which
you seem to prefer to affliction.
22
"God
is exalted in his power.
Who
is a teacher like him? 18
23
Who
has prescribed his ways for him,
or
said to him, `You have done wrong'?
24
Remember
to extol his work,
which
men have praised in song.
25
All
mankind has seen it;
men
gaze on it from afar.
26
How
great is God--beyond our understanding!
The
number of his years is past finding out.
27
"He
draws up the drops of water,
which
distill as rain to the streams C;
28
the
clouds pour down their moisture
and
abundant showers fall on mankind.
29
Who
can understand how he spreads out the clouds,
how
he thunders from his pavilion?
30
See
how he scatters his lightning about him,
bathing
the depths of the sea.

This
is the way he governs D

fills his hands with lightning

Therefore,
since through God's mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose
heart.
2
Rather,
we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception,
nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth
the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man's conscience in
the sight of God. 3
And
even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are
perishing. 4
The
god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they
cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the
image of God. 5
For
we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves
as your servants for Jesus' sake. 6
For
God, who said, "Let
light shine out of darkness,"
A
made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the
knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
7
But
we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this
all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8
We
are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not
in despair; 9
persecuted,
but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
10
We
always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life
of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11
For
we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus'
sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. 12
So
then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. 20
