LORD my God, I take refuge in you;
save
and deliver me from all who pursue me,

they will tear me like a lion

rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me.

LORD my God, if I have done this
and
there is guilt on my hands--
4
if
I have done evil to him who is at peace with me
or
without cause have robbed my foe--
5
then
let my enemy pursue and overtake me;
let
him trample my life to the ground
and
make me sleep in the dust.

Arise,
O LORD, in your anger;
rise
up against the rage of my enemies.

Of
David.
1
Do
A
not fret because of evil men
or
be envious of those who do wrong;
2
for
like the grass they will soon wither,
like
green plants they will soon die away.
3
Trust
in the LORD and do good;
dwell
in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
4
Delight
yourself in the LORD
and
he will give you the desires of your heart.
5
Commit
your way to the LORD;
trust
in him and he will do this:
6
He
will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,
the
justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
7
Be
still before the LORD and wait patiently for him;
do
not fret when men succeed in their ways,
when
they carry out their wicked schemes.

Refrain
from anger and turn from wrath;
do
not fret--it leads only to evil.

For
evil men will be cut off,
but
those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land.

A
little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though

wicked plot against the righteous

gnash their teeth at them;

Better
the little that the righteous have
than
the wealth of many wicked;

the power of the wicked will be broken,
but
the LORD upholds the righteous.

The
days of the blameless are known to the LORD,
and
their inheritance will endure forever.

In
times of disaster they will not wither;
in
days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

But
the wicked will perish:
The
LORD's enemies will be like the beauty of the fields,
they
will vanish--vanish like smoke.

The
wicked borrow and do not repay,
but
the righteous give generously;

those
the LORD blesses will inherit the land,
but
those he curses will be cut off. 4

If
the LORD delights in a man's way,
he
makes his steps firm;

though
he stumble, he will not fall,

I
was young and now I am old,
yet
I have never seen the righteous forsaken
or
their children begging bread.

They
are always generous and lend freely;

children will be blessed.

Turn
from evil and do good;

and
will not forsake his faithful ones.
They
will be protected forever,
but
the offspring of the wicked will be cut off;

mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,

law of his God is in his heart;

wicked lie in wait for the righteous,
seeking

the LORD will not leave them in their power

will exalt you to inherit the land;

have seen a wicked and ruthless man
flourishing
like a green tree in its native soil,

he soon passed away and was no more;

Consider
the blameless, observe the upright;

all sinners will be destroyed;

The
salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD;

earth sees and trembles.

The
mountains melt like wax before the LORD,

the Lord of all the earth.

The
heavens proclaim his righteousness,

the LORD builds the house,

builders labor in vain.

vain you rise early

Sons
are a heritage from the LORD,

today my complaint is bitter;
his

is heavy in spite of B
my groaning.

If
only I knew where to find him;
if
only I could go to his dwelling!

I
would state my case before him
and
fill my mouth with arguments.
5
I
would find out what he would answer me,
and
consider what he would say.
6
Would
he oppose me with great power?
No,
he would not press charges against me.
7
There
an upright man could present his case before him,
and
I would be delivered forever from my judge.
8
"But
if I go to the east, he is not there;
if
I go to the west, I do not find him.
9
When
he is at work in the north, I do not see him;
when
he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him.
10
But
he knows the way that I take;
when
he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
11
My
feet have closely followed his steps;
I
have kept to his way without turning aside.
12
I
have not departed from the commands of his lips;
I
have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread. 12

"But
he stands alone, and who can oppose him?
He
does whatever he pleases.

He
carries out his decree against me,
and
many such plans he still has in store.

That
is why I am terrified before him;
when
I think of all this, I fear him.

God
has made my heart faint;
the
Almighty has terrified me.

Yet
I am not silenced by the darkness,
by
the thick darkness that covers my face.

“Why does the Almighty not set times for judgment?
Why
must those who know him look in vain for such days?
2
Men
move boundary stones;
they
pasture flocks they have stolen.
3
They
drive away the orphan's donkey
and
take the widow's ox in pledge.
4
They
thrust the needy from the path
and
force all the poor of the land into hiding.
5
Like
wild donkeys in the desert,
the
poor go about their labor of foraging food;
the
wasteland provides food for their children.
6
They
gather fodder in the fields
and
glean in the vineyards of the wicked.
7
Lacking
clothes, they spend the night naked; 13
they
have nothing to cover themselves in the cold.
8
They
are drenched by mountain rains
and
hug the rocks for lack of shelter.
9The
fatherless child is snatched from the breast;
the
infant of the poor is seized for a debt.
10
Lacking
clothes, they go about naked;
they
carry the sheaves, but still go hungry.
11
They
crush olives among the terraces A;
they
tread the winepresses, yet suffer thirst.
12
The
groans of the dying rise from the city,
and
the souls of the wounded cry out for help.
But
God charges no one with wrongdoing.
13
"There
are those who rebel against the light,
who
do not know its ways
or
stay in its paths.
14
When
daylight is gone, the murderer rises up
and
kills the poor and needy;
in
the night he steals forth like a thief.
15
The
eye of the adulterer watches for dusk;
he
thinks, `No eye will see me,'
and
he keeps his face concealed.
16
In
the dark, men break into houses,
but
by day they shut themselves in;
they
want nothing to do with the light.

make friends with the terrors of darkness. C

"Yet
they are foam on the surface of the water;
their
portion of the land is cursed,
so
that no one goes to the vineyards.

As
heat and drought snatch away the melted snow,
so
the grave D
snatches away those who have sinned.

The
womb forgets them,
the
worm feasts on them;
evil
men are no longer remembered
but
are broken like a tree.
21
They
prey on the barren and childless woman,
and
to the widow show no kindness.

But
God drags away the mighty by his power;
though
they become established, they have no assurance of life.
23
He
may let them rest in a feeling of security,
but
his eyes are on their ways.
24
For
a little while they are exalted, and then they are gone;
they
are brought low and gathered up like all others;
they
are cut off like heads of grain.

"If
this is not so, who can prove me false
and
reduce my words to nothing?" 15

Then
Bildad the Shuhite replied:

"Dominion
and awe belong to God;
he
establishes order in the heights of heaven.
3
Can
his forces be numbered?
Upon
whom does his light not rise?
4
How
then can a man be righteous before God?
How
can one born of woman be pure?

If
even the moon is not bright
and
the stars are not pure in his eyes,
6
how
much less man, who is but a maggot--
a
son of man, who is only a worm!"

Then
Job replied:

"How
you have helped the powerless!
How
you have saved the arm that is feeble!

What
advice you have offered to one without wisdom!
And
what great insight you have displayed!

Who
has helped you utter these words?
And
whose spirit spoke from your mouth?

"The
dead are in deep anguish,
those
beneath the waters and all that live in them. 16

Death
A
is naked before God;
Destruction

lies uncovered.
7
He
spreads out the northern skies over empty space;
he
suspends the earth over nothing.
8
He
wraps up the waters in his clouds,
yet
the clouds do not burst under their weight.

He
covers the face of the full moon,
spreading
his clouds over it.

He
marks out the horizon on the face of the waters
for
a boundary between light and darkness.

The
pillars of the heavens quake,
aghast
at his rebuke.

By
his power he churned up the sea;

his wisdom he cut Rahab to pieces.

his breath the skies became fair;

these are but the outer fringe of his works;

faint the whisper we hear of him!

then can understand the thunder of his power?"

And
Job continued his discourse:

"As
surely as God lives, who has denied me justice,
the
Almighty, who has made me taste bitterness of soul,

as
long as I have life within me,
the
breath of God in my nostrils, 17
4
my
lips will not speak wickedness,
and
my tongue will utter no deceit.
5
I
will never admit you are in the right;
till
I die, I will not deny my integrity.
6
I
will maintain my righteousness and never let go of it;
my
conscience will not reproach me as long as I live.

"May
my enemies be like the wicked,
my
adversaries like the unjust!

For
what hope has the godless when he is cut off,
when
God takes away his life?
9
Does
God listen to his cry
when
distress comes upon him?
10
Will
he find delight in the Almighty?
Will
he call upon God at all times?

"I
will teach you about the power of God;
the
ways of the Almighty I will not conceal.
12
You
have all seen this yourselves.
Why
then this meaningless talk?
13
"Here
is the fate God allots to the wicked,
the
heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty:

However
many his children, their fate is the sword;
his
offspring will never have enough to eat.
15
The
plague will bury those who survive him, 18
and
their widows will not weep for them.
16
Though
he heaps up silver like dust
and
clothes like piles of clay,
17
what
he lays up the righteous will wear,
and
the innocent will divide his silver.
18
The
house he builds is like a moth's cocoon,
like
a hut made by a watchman.
19
He
lies down wealthy, but will do so no more;
when
he opens his eyes, all is gone.
20
Terrors
overtake him like a flood;
a
tempest snatches him away in the night.

east wind carries him off, and he is gone;
it
sweeps him out of his place.

It
hurls itself against him without mercy
as
he flees headlong from its power.

It
claps its hands in derision
and

2 CORINTHIANS 1:12 - 2:11

Now
this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted
ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in
the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done so not
according to worldly wisdom but according to God's grace. 13
For
we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I
hope that, 14
as
you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully
that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of
the Lord Jesus.
15
Because
I was confident of this, I planned to visit you first so that you
might benefit twice. 16
I
planned to visit you on my way to Macedonia and to come back to you
from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way to Judea. 17
When
I planned this, did I do it lightly? Or do I make my plans in a
worldly manner so that in the same breath I say, "Yes, yes"
and "No, no"?
18
But
as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not "Yes"
and "No." 19
For
the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by me and
Silas B
and Timothy, was not "Yes" and "No," but in him
it has always been "Yes." 20
For
no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in
Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to
the glory of God. 21
Now
it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed
us, 22
set
his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a
deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
23
I
call God as my witness that it was in order to spare you that I did
not return to Corinth. 24
Not
that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy,
because it is by faith you stand firm.

So
I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.
2
For
if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have
grieved? 3
I
wrote as I did so that when I came I should not be distressed by
those who ought to make me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you,
that you would all share my joy. 4
For
I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many
tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for
you.
5
If
anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has
grieved all of you, to some extent--not to put it too severely. 6
The
punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him. 7
Now
instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be
overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8
I
urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.
9
The
reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be
obedient in everything. 10
If
you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven--if
there was anything to forgive--I have forgiven in the sight of Christ
for your sake, 11
in
order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his
schemes.
