not drag me away with the wicked,

those who do evil,

speak cordially with their neighbors

harbor malice in their hearts.

Repay

you judge uprightly among men?

No,
in your heart you devise injustice,

your hands mete out violence on the earth.

venom is like the venom of a snake,
like
that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,

that
will not heed the tune of the charmer,
however
skillful the enchanter may be.

Break

a country is rebellious, it has many rulers,

a man of understanding and knowledge maintains order.

who oppresses the poor

like a driving rain that leaves no crops.

Those
who forsake the law praise the wicked,
but
those who keep the law resist them.

Evil
men do not understand justice,
but
those who seek the LORD understand it fully.

Better
a poor man whose walk is blameless

a rich man whose ways are perverse.

He
who keeps the law is a discerning son,

a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.

1
O LORD, you are my God;
I
will exalt you and praise your name,
for
in perfect faithfulness
you
have done marvelous things,
things
planned long ago.
2
You
have made the city a heap of rubble,
the
fortified town a ruin,
the
foreigners' stronghold a city no more;
it
will never be rebuilt.
3
Therefore
strong peoples will honor you;
cities
of ruthless nations will revere you.
4
You
have been a refuge for the poor,
a
refuge for the needy in his distress,
a
shelter from the storm
and
a shade from the heat.
For
the breath of the ruthless
is
like a storm driving against a wall
5
and like the heat of the desert.
You
silence the uproar of foreigners;
as
heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud,
so
the song of the ruthless is stilled.
6
On
this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare
a
feast of rich food for all peoples,
a
banquet of aged wine-- 14
the
best of meats and the finest of wines.
7
On
this mountain he will destroy
the
shroud that enfolds all peoples,
the
sheet that covers all nations;
8
he will swallow up death forever.
The
Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears
from
all faces;
he
will remove the disgrace of his people
from
all the earth.
The
LORD has spoken.

In
that day they will say,
"Surely
this is our God;
we
trusted in him, and he saved us.
This
is the LORD, we trusted in him;
let
us rejoice and be glad in his salvation."

hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain;
but
Moab will be trampled under him
as
straw is trampled down in the manure.

will spread out their hands in it,
as
a swimmer spreads out his hands to swim.

will bring down their pride
despite

will bring down your high fortified walls

lay them low;

have a strong city;
God
makes salvation

the gates

the righteous nation may enter,

Trust
in the LORD forever,
for
the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal.

are now dead, they live no more;

departed spirits do not rise.

on a day the east wind blows.

By
this, then, will Jacob's guilt be atoned for,

this will be the full fruitage of the removal of his sin:

he makes all the altar stones

be like chalk stones crushed to pieces,

or incense altars
will
be left standing.

The
fortified city stands desolate,
an
abandoned settlement, forsaken like the desert;
there
the calves graze,
there
they lie down;
they
strip its branches bare. 20

When
its twigs are dry, they are broken off
and
women come and make fires with them.
For
this is a people without understanding;
so
their Maker has no compassion on them,
and
their Creator shows them no favor.
12
In
that day the LORD will thresh from the flowing Euphrates C
to the Wadi of Egypt, and you, O Israelites, will be gathered up one
by one. 13
And
in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing in
Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship the
LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

Woe to that wreath, the pride of Ephraim's drunkards,
to
the fading flower, his glorious beauty,
set
on the head of a fertile valley--
to
that city, the pride of those laid low by wine!
2
See,
the Lord has one who is powerful and strong.
Like
a hailstorm and a destructive wind,
like
a driving rain and a flooding downpour,
he
will throw it forcefully to the ground.
3
That
wreath, the pride of Ephraim's drunkards,
will
be trampled underfoot.
4
That
fading flower, his glorious beauty,
set
on the head of a fertile valley,
will
be like a fig ripe before harvest--
as
soon as someone sees it and takes it in his hand, 21
he
swallows it.
5
In
that day the LORD Almighty
will
be a glorious crown,
a
beautiful wreath
for
the remnant of his people.

He
will be a spirit of justice
to
him who sits in judgment,
a
source of strength
to
those who turn back the battle at the gate.

And
these also stagger from wine
and
reel from beer:
Priests
and prophets stagger from beer
and
are befuddled with wine;
they
reel from beer,
they
stagger when seeing visions,
they
stumble when rendering decisions.

All
the tables are covered with vomit
and
there is not a spot without filth.
9
"Who
is it he is trying to teach?
To
whom is he explaining his message?
To
children weaned from their milk,
to
those just taken from the breast?
Do
and do, do and do,
rule
on rule, rule on rule

a
little here, a little there."

Very
well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues
God
will speak to this people,
12
to
whom he said,
"This
is the resting place, let the weary rest";
and,
"This
is the place of repose"--
but
they would not listen.

So
then, the word of the LORD to them will become:
Do
and do, do and do,
rule
on rule, rule on rule;
a
little here, a little there--
so
that they will go and fall backward,
be
injured and snared and captured.

All
who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written:
"Cursed
is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the
Book of the Law."

Clearly
no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The
righteous will live by faith."
D
12
The
law is not based on faith; on the contrary, "The
man who does these things will live by them."
E
13
Christ
redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for
it is written: "Cursed
is everyone who is hung on a tree."
F
14
He
redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to
the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive
the promise of the Spirit.
15
Brothers,
let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set
aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so
it is in this case. 16
The
promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does
not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and
to your seed,"
G
meaning one person, who is Christ. 17
What
I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set
aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away
with the promise. 18
For
if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a
promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.
19
What,
then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of
transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come.
The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator. 20
A
mediator, however, does not represent just one party; but God is one.
21
Is
the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not!
For if a law had been given that could impart life, then
righteousness would certainly have come by the law. 22
But
the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so
that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ,
might be given to those who believe. 24
