the LORD cut off all flattering lips
and
every boastful tongue

that
says, "We will triumph with our tongues;
we
own our lips B--who is our master?"
5
"Because of the oppression of the
weak
and
the groaning of the needy,
I
will now arise,"
says the LORD.
"I will protect them from those who malign
them."
6
And
the words of the LORD are flawless,
like
silver refined in a furnace of clay,
purified
seven times.

O
LORD, you will keep us safe
and
protect us from such people forever.

The
wicked freely strut about
when

the deer pants for streams of water,
so
my soul pants for you, O God.

My
soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When
can I go and meet with God?

My
tears have been my food
day
and night,

is your God?"

things I remember
as
I pour out my soul:
how
I used to go with the multitude,
leading
the procession to the house of God,
with
shouts of joy and thanksgiving
among
the festive throng.

Why
are you downcast, O my soul?

Of
Solomon.
1
Endow
the king with your justice, O God,
the
royal son with your righteousness.

He
will A judge your people in righteousness,

afflicted ones with justice.

The
mountains will bring prosperity to the people,
the
hills the fruit of righteousness.
4
He
will defend the afflicted among the people
and
save the children of the needy;
he
will crush the oppressor.
5
He
will endure B as long as the sun,
as
long as the moon, through all generations.

He
will be like rain falling on a mown field,
like
showers watering the earth.

In
his days the righteous will flourish;
prosperity
will abound till the moon is no more.

gold from Sheba be given him.

16 Let grain abound
throughout the land;
on
the tops of the hills may it sway.
Let
its fruit flourish like Lebanon;
let
it thrive like the grass of the field.
17 May his name endure

it continue as long as the sun.
All
nations will be blessed through him,
and

God, the God of Israel,
who
alone does marvelous deeds.

A
prayer of an afflicted man. When he is faint and pours out his lament before the
LORD.
1
Hear
my prayer, O LORD;
let
my cry for help come to you.
2
Do
not hide your face from me
when
I am in distress.
Turn
your ear to me;
when
I call, answer me quickly.
3
For
my days vanish like smoke;
my
bones burn like glowing embers.
4
My
heart is blighted and withered like grass;
I
forget to eat my food.
5
Because
of my loud groaning
I
am reduced to skin and bones.
6
I
am like a desert owl,
like
an owl among the ruins.
7
I
lie awake; I have become
like
a bird alone on a roof.
8
All
day long my enemies taunt me;
those
who rail against me use my name as a curse.
9
For
I eat ashes as my food
and
mingle my drink with tears
10
because
of your great wrath,
for
you have taken me up and thrown me aside.

My
days are like the evening shadow;
I

But
you, O LORD, sit enthroned forever;
your
renown endures through all generations.

You
will arise and have compassion on Zion,
for
it is time to show favor to her;

appointed time has come.

her stones are dear to your servants;

nations will fear the name of the LORD,
all
the kings of the earth will revere your glory.

the LORD will rebuild Zion
and
appear in his glory.

He
will respond to the prayer of the destitute;

will not despise their plea.

Let
this be written for a future generation,
that
a people not yet created may praise the LORD:

"The
LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high,
from
heaven he viewed the earth,
20
to
hear the groans of the prisoners
and
release those condemned to death."
21
So
the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion
and
his praise in Jerusalem
22
when
the peoples and the kingdoms
assemble
to worship the LORD.
23
In
the course of my life A he broke my strength;
he
cut short my days.
24
So
I said:
"Do
not take me away, O my God, in the midst of my days;
your
years go on through all generations.
25
In
the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth,
and
the heavens are the work of your hands.[7]

They
will perish, but you remain;
they
will all wear out like a garment.
Like
clothing you will change them
and
they will be discarded.
27
But
you remain the same,
and
your years will never end.

children of your servants will live in your presence;

O
LORD, remember David
and
all the hardships he endured.
2
He
swore an oath to the LORD
and
made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:

"I
will not enter my house
or
go to my bed--

I
will allow no sleep to my eyes,
no
slumber to my eyelids,
5
till
I find a place for the LORD,
a
dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob."

We
heard it in Ephrathah,
we

12
1
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but
he who hates correction is stupid.
2
A
good man obtains favor from the LORD,
but
the LORD condemns a crafty man.
3
A
man cannot be established through wickedness,
but
the righteous cannot be uprooted.
4
A
wife of noble character is her husband's crown,
but
a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.
5
The
plans of the righteous are just,
but
the advice of the wicked is deceitful.
6
The
words of the wicked lie in wait for blood,
but
the speech of the upright rescues them.
7
Wicked
men are overthrown and are no more,
but
the house of the righteous stands firm.
8
A
man is praised according to his wisdom,
but
men with warped minds are despised.
9
Better
to be a nobody and yet have a servant
than
pretend to be somebody and have no food.
10
A
righteous man cares for the needs of his animal,
but
the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.

He
who works his land will have abundant food,
but
he who chases fantasies lacks judgment. [11]

wicked desire the plunder of evil men,
but
the root of the righteous flourishes.

evil man is trapped by his sinful talk,

Reckless

the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Truthful
lips endure forever,

a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

There
is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil,

joy for those who promote peace.

No
harm befalls the righteous,
but
the wicked have their fill of trouble. [12]

LORD detests lying lips,
but
he delights in men who are truthful.

A
prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself,
but
the heart of fools blurts out folly.
24
Diligent
hands will rule,
but
laziness ends in slave labor.
25
An
anxious heart weighs a man down,
but
a kind word cheers him up.
26
A
righteous man is cautious in friendship, A
but
the way of the wicked leads them astray.
27
The
lazy man does not roast B his game,
but
the diligent man prizes his possessions.
28
In
the way of righteousness there is life;
along

TESTAMENT: DEUTERONOMY 23:1 -
25:19
23
1
No
one who has been emasculated by crushing or cutting may enter the assembly of
the LORD.
2
No
one born of a forbidden marriage A nor any of his descendants may
enter the assembly of the LORD, even down to the tenth generation.
3
No
Ammonite or Moabite or any of his descendants may enter the assembly of the
LORD, even down to the tenth generation. 4 For they did not come to
meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they
hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim B to pronounce
a curse on you. 5 However, the LORD your God would not listen to
Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God
loves you. 6 Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them as long as
you live.
7
Do
not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother. Do not abhor an Egyptian, because
you lived as an alien in his country. 8 The third generation of
children born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD.
9
When
you are encamped against your enemies, keep away from everything impure.
10
If
one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside
the camp and stay there. 11 But as evening approaches he is to wash
himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp.
12
Designate
a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. 13 As
part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve
yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement. 14 For the LORD
your God moves about in your camp to [14]
protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that
he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.
15
If
a slave has taken refuge with you, do not hand him over to his master. 16
Let him live among you wherever he likes and in whatever town he chooses.
Do not oppress him.
17
No
Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute. 18 You must
not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute
C into the house of the LORD your God to pay any vow, because the
LORD your God detests them both.
19
Do
not charge your brother interest, whether on money or food or anything else that
may earn interest. 20 You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a
brother Israelite, so that the LORD your God may bless you in everything you put
your hand to in the land you are entering to possess.
21
If
you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the LORD your
God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin. 22
But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty. 23
Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow
freely to the LORD your God with your own mouth.
24
If
you enter your neighbor's vineyard, you may eat all the grapes you want, but do
not put any in your basket. 25 If you enter your neighbor's
grainfield, you may pick kernels with your hands, but you must not put a sickle
to his standing grain. [15]

1
If
a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something
indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her
and sends her from his house, 2 and if after she leaves his house she
becomes the wife of another man, 3 and her second husband dislikes
her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from
his house, or if he dies, 4 then her first husband, who divorced her,
is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be
detestable in the eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your
God is giving you as an inheritance.
5
If
a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty
laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness
to the wife he has married.
6
Do
not take a pair of millstones--not even the upper one--as security for a debt,
because that would be taking a man's livelihood as security.
7
If
a man is caught kidnapping one of his brother Israelites and treats him as a
slave or sells him, the kidnapper must die. You must purge the evil from among
you.
8
In
cases of leprous A diseases be very careful to do exactly as the
priests, who are Levites, instruct you. You must follow carefully what I have
commanded them.
9
Remember
what the LORD your God did to Miriam along the way after you came out of Egypt.
10
When
you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not go into his house to get
what he is offering as a pledge. 11 Stay outside [16]
and let the man to whom you are making the loan bring the pledge out to you.
12 If the man is poor, do not go to sleep with his pledge in your
possession. 13 Return his cloak to him by sunset so that he may sleep
in it. Then he will thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the
sight of the LORD your God.
14
Do
not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother
Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns. 15 Pay him his
wages each day before sunset, because he is poor and is counting on it.
Otherwise he may cry to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
16
Fathers
shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for
their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.
17
Do
not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the
widow as a pledge. 18 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the
LORD your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this.
19
When
you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get
it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD your
God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat the
olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what
remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow. 21 When you
harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what
remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow.
22
Remember
that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this. [17]

1
When
men have a dispute, they are to take it to court and the judges will decide the
case, acquitting the innocent and condemning the guilty. 2 If the
guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall make him lie down and have him
flogged in his presence with the number of lashes his crime deserves, 3
but he must not give him more than forty lashes. If he is flogged more
than that, your brother will be degraded in your eyes.
4
Do
not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.
5
If
brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must
not marry outside the family. Her husband's brother shall take her and marry her
and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her. 6 The first son she
bears shall carry on the name of the dead brother so that his name will not be
blotted out from Israel.
7
However,
if a man does not want to marry his brother's wife, she shall go to the elders
at the town gate and say, "My husband's brother refuses to carry on his
brother's name in Israel. He will not fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to
me." 8 Then the elders of his town shall summon him and talk to him.
If he persists in saying, "I do not want to marry her," 9 his
brother's widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, take off one
of his sandals, spit in his face and say, "This is what is done to the man who
will not build up his brother's family line." 10 That man's line
shall be known in Israel as The Family of the Unsandaled.
11
If
two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband
from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts,
12 you shall cut off her hand. Show [18]
her no pity.
13
Do
not have two differing weights in your bag--one heavy, one light. 14
Do not have two differing measures in your house--one large, one small.
15 You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that
you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. 16 For
the LORD your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals
dishonestly.
17
Remember
what the Amalekites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. 18
When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and cut off
all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God. 19 When the
LORD your God gives you rest from all the enemies around you in the land he is
giving you to possess as an inheritance, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek
from under heaven. Do not forget! [19]

"Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the
miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they
would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
14 But it will be more bearable for
Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No,
you will go down to the depths. B
16
"He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who
rejects me rejects him who sent me."
17
The
seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in
your name."
18
He
replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
19 I have given you authority to
trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy;
nothing will harm you. 20 However,
do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are
written in heaven."
21
At
that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you
have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little
children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.
22
"All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is
except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those
to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."
23
Then
he turned to his disciples and said privately, "Blessed are the eyes that see
what you see. 24
For I tell you that many [20]
prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear
what you hear but did not hear it."
25
On
one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked,
"what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
26
"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"
27
He
answered: " `Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your strength and with all your mind' C; and, `Love your
neighbor as yourself.' D"
28
"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do
this and you will live."
29
But
he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
30
In
reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem
to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his
clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31
A priest happened to be going down the same
road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32
So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and
saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was;
and when he saw him, he took pity on him.
34
He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the
man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him.
35

next day he took out two silver coins E
and gave them to the innkeeper. `Look after him,' he said, `and when I return, I
will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'

"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the
hands of robbers?"

The
expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him."
Jesus

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
