A
psalm of David.
1
The
LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2
He
makes me lie down in green pastures,
he
leads me beside quiet waters,
3
he
restores my soul.
He
guides me in paths of righteousness
for
his name's sake.
4
Even
though I walk
through
the valley of the shadow of death, A
I
will fear no evil,
for
you are with me;
your
rod and your staff,
they
comfort me.
5
You
prepare a table before me
in
the presence of my enemies.
You
anoint my head with oil;
my
cup overflows.
6
Surely
goodness and love will follow me
all
the days of my life,
and
I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.

PSALMS: 53
For
the director of music. According to mahalath. A A maskil
B of David.
1
The
fool says in his heart,
"There
is no God."
They
are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
there
is no one who does good.
2
God
looks down from heaven
on
the sons of men
to
see if there are any who understand,
any
who seek God.
3
Everyone
has turned away,
they
have together become corrupt;
there
is no one who does good,
not
even one.
4
Will
the evildoers never learn--
those
who devour my people as men eat bread
and
who do not call on God?
5
There
they were, overwhelmed with dread,
where
there was nothing to dread.
God
scattered the bones of those who attacked you;
you
put them to shame, for God despised them.
6
Oh,
that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When
God restores the fortunes of his people,
let
Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad! [2]
PSALMS: 83
A
song. A psalm of Asaph.
1
O
God, do not keep silent;
be
not quiet, O God, be not still.
2
See
how your enemies are astir,
how
your foes rear their heads.
3
With
cunning they conspire against your people;
they
plot against those you cherish.
4
"Come,"
they say, "let us destroy them as a nation,
that
the name of Israel be remembered no more."
5
With
one mind they plot together;
they
form an alliance against you--
6
the
tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
of
Moab and the Hagrites,
7
Gebal,
A Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia,
with the people of Tyre.
8
Even
Assyria has joined them
to
lend strength to the descendants of Lot.
Selah
9
Do
to them as you did to Midian,
as
you did to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon,
10
who
perished at Endor
and
became like refuse on the ground.
11
Make
their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,
all
their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
12
who
said, "Let us take possession
of
the pasturelands of God." [3]
13
Make
them like tumbleweed, O my God,
like
chaff before the wind.
14
As
fire consumes the forest
or
a flame sets the mountains ablaze,
15
so
pursue them with your tempest
and
terrify them with your storm.
16
Cover
their faces with shame
so
that men will seek your name, O LORD.
17
May
they ever be ashamed and dismayed;
may
they perish in disgrace.
18
Let
them know that you, whose name is the LORD--
that
you alone are the Most High over all the earth. [4]
PSALMS: 113
1
Praise
the LORD. A
Praise,
O servants of the LORD,
praise
the name of the LORD.
2
Let
the name of the LORD be praised,
both
now and forevermore.
3
From
the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,
the
name of the LORD is to be praised.
4
The
LORD is exalted over all the nations,
his
glory above the heavens.
5
Who
is like the LORD our God,
the
One who sits enthroned on high,
6
who
stoops down to look
on
the heavens and the earth?
7
He
raises the poor from the dust
and
lifts the needy from the ash heap;
8
he
seats them with princes,
with
the princes of their people.
9
He
settles the barren woman in her home
as
a happy mother of children.
Praise
the LORD. [5]
PSALMS: 143
A
psalm of David.
1
O
LORD, hear my prayer,
listen
to my cry for mercy;
in
your faithfulness and righteousness
come
to my relief.
2
Do
not bring your servant into judgment,
for
no one living is righteous before you.
3
The
enemy pursues me,
he
crushes me to the ground;
he
makes me dwell in darkness
like
those long dead.
4
So
my spirit grows faint within me;
my
heart within me is dismayed.
5
I
remember the days of long ago;
I
meditate on all your works
and
consider what your hands have done.
6
I
spread out my hands to you;
my
soul thirsts for you like a parched land.
Selah
7
Answer
me quickly, O LORD;
my
spirit fails.
Do
not hide your face from me
or
I will be like those who go down to the pit.
8
Let
the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for
I have put my trust in you.
Show
me the way I should go,
for
to you I lift up my soul.
9
Rescue
me from my enemies, O LORD, [6]
for
I hide myself in you.
10
Teach
me to do your will,
for
you are my God;
may
your good Spirit
lead
me on level ground.
11
For
your name's sake, O LORD, preserve my life;
in
your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.
12
In
your unfailing love, silence my enemies;
destroy
all my foes,
for
I am your servant. [7]
PROVERBS: 23

1
When you sit to dine with a ruler,
note
well what A is before you,
2
and
put a knife to your throat
if
you are given to gluttony.
3
Do
not crave his delicacies,
for
that food is deceptive.
4
Do
not wear yourself out to get rich;
have
the wisdom to show restraint.
5
Cast
but a glance at riches, and they are gone,
for
they will surely sprout wings
and
fly off to the sky like an eagle.
6
Do
not eat the food of a stingy man,
do
not crave his delicacies;
7
for
he is the kind of man
who
is always thinking about the cost. B
"Eat
and drink," he says to you,
but
his heart is not with you.
8
You
will vomit up the little you have eaten
and
will have wasted your compliments.
9
Do
not speak to a fool,
for
he will scorn the wisdom of your words.
10
Do
not move an ancient boundary stone
or
encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
11
for
their Defender is strong;
he
will take up their case against you.
12
Apply
your heart to instruction
and
your ears to words of knowledge. [8]
13
Do
not withhold discipline from a child;
if
you punish him with the rod, he will not die.
14
Punish
him with the rod
and
save his soul from death. C
15
My
son, if your heart is wise,
then
my heart will be glad;
16
my
inmost being will rejoice
when
your lips speak what is right.
17
Do
not let your heart envy sinners,
but
always be zealous for the fear of the LORD.
18
There
is surely a future hope for you,
and
your hope will not be cut off.
19
Listen,
my son, and be wise,
and
keep your heart on the right path.
20
Do
not join those who drink too much wine
or
gorge themselves on meat,
21
for
drunkards and gluttons become poor,
and
drowsiness clothes them in rags.
22
Listen
to your father, who gave you life,
and
do not despise your mother when she is old.
23
Buy
the truth and do not sell it;
get
wisdom, discipline and understanding.
24
The
father of a righteous man has great joy;
he
who has a wise son delights in him.
25
May
your father and mother be glad;
may
she who gave you birth rejoice! [9]
26
My
son, give me your heart
and
let your eyes keep to my ways,
27
for
a prostitute is a deep pit
and
a wayward wife is a narrow well.
28
Like
a bandit she lies in wait,
and
multiplies the unfaithful among men.
29
Who
has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who
has strife? Who has complaints?
Who
has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
30
Those
who linger over wine,
who
go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31
Do
not gaze at wine when it is red,
when
it sparkles in the cup,
when
it goes down smoothly!
32
In
the end it bites like a snake
and
poisons like a viper.
33
Your
eyes will see strange sights
and
your mind imagine confusing things.
34
You
will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying
on top of the rigging. [10]
OLD
TESTAMENT: JOSHUA 9:3 - 10:43
3
However,
when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,
4
they
resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded
B with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. 5
The men put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes.
All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. 6 Then they
went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, "We
have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us."
7
The
men of Israel said to the Hivites, "But perhaps you live near us. How then can
we make a treaty with you?"
8
"We
are your servants," they said to Joshua.
But
Joshua asked, "Who are you and where do you come from?"
9
They
answered: "Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the
fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in
Egypt, 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east
of the Jordan--Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in
Ashtaroth. 11 And our elders and all those living in our country said
to us, `Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, "We
are your servants; make a treaty with us."' 12 This bread of ours was
warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see
how dry and moldy it is. 13 And these wineskins that we filled were
new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by
the very long journey." [11]
14
The
men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD. 15
Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the
leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.
16
Three
days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that
they were neighbors, living near them. 17 So the Israelites set out
and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath
Jearim. 18 But the Israelites did not attack them, because the
leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of
Israel.
The
whole assembly grumbled against the leaders, 19 but all the leaders
answered, "We have given them our oath by the LORD, the God of Israel, and we
cannot touch them now. 20 This is what we will do to them: We will
let them live, so that wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore
to them." 21 They continued, "Let them live, but let them be
woodcutters and water carriers for the entire community." So the leaders'
promise to them was kept.
22
Then
Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, "Why did you deceive us by saying, `We
live a long way from you,' while actually you live near us? 23 You
are now under a curse: You will never cease to serve as woodcutters and water
carriers for the house of my God."
24
They
answered Joshua, "Your servants were clearly told how the LORD your God had
commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its
inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that
is why we did this.
25
We
are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you." [12]
26 So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill
them. 27 That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water
carriers for the community and for the altar of the LORD at the place the LORD
would choose. And that is what they are to this day.
10
1
Now
Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally
destroyed A it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho
and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with
Israel and were living near them.
2
He
and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important
city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were
good fighters. 3 So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham
king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish and Debir king of
Eglon. 4 "Come up and help me attack Gibeon," he said, "because it
has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites."
5
Then
the five kings of the Amorites--the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish
and Eglon--joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up
positions against Gibeon and attacked it.
6
The
Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: "Do not abandon your
servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite
kings from the hill country have joined forces against us." [13]
7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army, including
all the best fighting men. 8 The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be
afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able
to withstand you."
9
After
an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10 The
LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who defeated them in a great
victory at Gibeon. Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon and
cut them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah. 11 As they fled
before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the LORD hurled large
hailstones down on them from the sky, and more of them died from the hailstones
than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.
12
On
the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in
the presence of Israel:
"O
sun, stand still over Gibeon,
O
moon, over the Valley of Aijalon."
13
So
the sun stood still,
and
the moon stopped,
till
the nation avenged itself on B its enemies,
as
it is written in the Book of Jashar.
The
sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.
14
There
has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a
man. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!
15
Then
Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.
16
Now
the five kings had fled and hidden in the cave at [14]
Makkedah.
17
When
Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at
Makkedah, 18 he said, "Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave,
and post some men there to guard it. 19 But don't stop! Pursue your
enemies, attack them from the rear and don't let them reach their cities, for
the LORD your God has given them into your hand."
20
So
Joshua and the Israelites destroyed them completely--almost to a man--but the
few who were left reached their fortified cities. 21 The whole army
then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a
word against the Israelites.
22
Joshua
said, "Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me."
23
So
they brought the five kings out of the cave--the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron,
Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 When they had brought these kings to
Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who
had come with him, "Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings." So
they came forward and placed their feet on their necks.
25
Joshua
said to them, "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and
courageous. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to
fight."
26
Then
Joshua struck and killed the kings and hung them on five trees, and they were
left hanging on the trees until evening.
27
At
sunset Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the trees and threw
them into the cave where they had been hiding. [15]At
the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day.
28
That
day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally
destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors. And he did to the king of
Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29
Then
Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it.
30 The LORD also gave that city and its king into Israel's hand. The
city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And
he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31
Then
Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish; he took up
positions against it and attacked it. 32 The LORD handed Lachish over
to Israel, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he
put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33 Meanwhile, Horam
king of Gezer had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his
army--until no survivors were left.
34
Then
Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon; they took up
positions against it and attacked it. 35 They captured it that same
day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they
had done to Lachish.
36
Then
Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron and attacked it.
37
They
took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and
everyone in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed
it and everyone in it. [16]
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked
Debir. 39 They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them
to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors.
They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to
Hebron.
40
So
Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev, the
western foothills and the mountain slopes, together with all their kings. He
left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the LORD, the
God of Israel, had commanded. 41 Joshua subdued them from Kadesh
Barnea to Gaza and from the whole region of Goshen to Gibeon. 42 All
these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the LORD,
the God of Israel, fought for Israel.
43
Then
Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal. [17]
NEW
TESTAMENT: LUKE 16:19 -
17:10
19
"There
was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury
every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered
with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table.
Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22
"The
time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The
rich man also died and was buried. 23 In hell, C where he
was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.
24 So he called to him, `Father Abraham, have pity on me and send
Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am
in agony in this fire.'
25
"But
Abraham replied, `Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good
things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you
are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great
chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor
can anyone cross over from there to us.'
27
"He
answered, `Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, 28
for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also
come to this place of torment.'
29
"Abraham
replied, `They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'
30
"
`No, father Abraham,' he said, `but if someone from the dead goes to them, they
will repent.'
31
"He
said to him, `If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be
convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'" [18]
17
1
Jesus
said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to
sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come.
2 It would be better for him to be
thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause
one of these little ones to sin. 3
So watch yourselves.
"If
your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. 4
If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you
and says, `I repent,' forgive him."
5
The
apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"
6
He
replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard
seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, `Be uprooted and planted in the sea,'
and it will obey you.
7
"Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he
say to the servant when he comes in from the field, `Come along now and sit down
to eat'?
8
Would he not rather say, `Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me
while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink'? 9
Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?
10
So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, `We
are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'"

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
