prayer of David.
1
Hear,
O LORD, my righteous plea;
listen
to my cry.
Give
ear to my prayer--
it
does not rise from deceitful lips.

May
my vindication come from you;
may
your eyes see what is right.
3
Though
you probe my heart and examine me at night,
though
you test me, you will find nothing;
I
have resolved that my mouth will not sin.
4
As
for the deeds of men--
by
the word of your lips
I
have kept myself
from
the ways of the violent.
5
My
steps have held to your paths;
my
feet have not slipped.
6
I
call on you, O God, for you will answer me;
give
ear to me and hear my prayer.
7
Show
the wonder of your great love,
you
who save by your right hand
those
who take refuge in you from their foes.
8
Keep
me as the apple of your eye;
hide
me in the shadow of your wings
9
from
the wicked who assail me,
from
my mortal enemies who surround me. [1]

They
close up their callous hearts,
and
their mouths speak with arrogance.
11
They
have tracked me down, they now surround me,
with
eyes alert, to throw me to the ground.

They
are like a lion hungry for prey,
like
a great lion crouching in cover.

Rise
up, O LORD, confront them, bring them down;
rescue
me from the wicked by your sword.

O
LORD, by your hand save me from such men,
from
men of this world whose reward is in this life.
You
still the hunger of those you cherish;
their
sons have plenty,
and
they store up wealth for their children.

And
I--in righteousness I will see your face;

I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing

Clap
your hands, all you nations;
shout
to God with cries of joy.

How
awesome is the LORD Most High,

great King over all the earth!

subdued nations under us,
peoples

chose our inheritance for us,

pride of Jacob, whom he loved.

God
has ascended amid shouts of joy,
the
LORD amid the sounding of trumpets.

Sing
praises to God, sing praises;

For
God is the King of all the earth;

reigns over the nations;

is seated on his holy throne.

nobles of the nations assemble

cried out to God for help;
I

I was in distress, I sought the Lord;

remembered you, O God, and I groaned;

mused, and my spirit grew faint.

You
kept my eyes from closing;
I
was too troubled to speak.

I
thought about the former days,
the
years of long ago;

I
remembered my songs in the night.
My
heart mused and my spirit inquired:

"Will
the Lord reject forever?

he never show his favor again?

his unfailing love vanished forever?
Has
his promise failed for all time?

Has
God forgotten to be merciful?

he in anger withheld his compassion?"

will remember the deeds of the LORD;

will meditate on all your works

What
god is so great as our God?

You
are the God who performs miracles;
you
display your power among the peoples.

With
your mighty arm you redeemed your people,
the
descendants of Jacob and Joseph.

very depths were convulsed.

The
clouds poured down water,

skies resounded with thunder;

Give
thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his
love endures forever.
2
Let
the redeemed of the LORD say this--
those
he redeemed from the hand of the foe,

those
he gathered from the lands,
from
east and west, from north and south. A

Some
wandered in desert wastelands,
finding
no way to a city where they could settle.
5
They
were hungry and thirsty,
and
their lives ebbed away.
6
Then
they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and
he delivered them from their distress.
7
He
led them by a straight way
to
a city where they could settle.
8
Let
them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love
and
his wonderful deeds for men,

for
he satisfies the thirsty
and
fills the hungry with good things.

Some
sat in darkness and the deepest gloom,
prisoners
suffering in iron chains,

for
they had rebelled against the words of God
and
despised the counsel of the Most High.

So
he subjected them to bitter labor;
they
stumbled, and there was no one to help.
13
Then
they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and
he saved them from their distress.

He
brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom
and
broke away their chains.
15
Let
them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love
and
his wonderful deeds for men,
16
for
he breaks down gates of bronze
and
cuts through bars of iron. [6]

Some
became fools through their rebellious ways
and
suffered affliction because of their iniquities.
18
They
loathed all food
and
drew near the gates of death.
19
Then
they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and
he saved them from their distress.
20
He
sent forth his word and healed them;
he
rescued them from the grave.
21
Let
them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love
and
his wonderful deeds for men.
22
Let
them sacrifice thank offerings
and
tell of his works with songs of joy.
23
Others
went out on the sea in ships;
they
were merchants on the mighty waters.
24
They
saw the works of the LORD,
his
wonderful deeds in the deep.
25
For
he spoke and stirred up a tempest
that
lifted high the waves.
26
They
mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
in
their peril their courage melted away.
27
They
reeled and staggered like drunken men;
they
were at their wits' end.
28
Then
they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and
he brought them out of their distress.
29
He
stilled the storm to a whisper;
the
waves of the sea were hushed.
30
They
were glad when it grew calm,
and
he guided them to their desired haven.

Let
them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love
and
his wonderful deeds for men.

Let
them exalt him in the assembly of the people [7]
and
praise him in the council of the elders.

He
turned rivers into a desert,
flowing
springs into thirsty ground,

and
fruitful land into a salt waste,
because
of the wickedness of those who lived there.

He
turned the desert into pools of water
and
the parched ground into flowing springs;

there
he brought the hungry to live,
and
they founded a city where they could settle.
37
They
sowed fields and planted vineyards
that
yielded a fruitful harvest;
38
he
blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased,
and
he did not let their herds diminish.

Then
their numbers decreased, and they were humbled
by
oppression, calamity and sorrow;
40
he
who pours contempt on nobles
made
them wander in a trackless waste.
41
But
he lifted the needy out of their affliction
and
increased their families like flocks.
42
The
upright see and rejoice,
but
all the wicked shut their mouths.
43
Whoever
is wise, let him heed these things
and
consider the great love of the LORD. [8]
PSALMS: 137
1
By
the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept
when
we remembered Zion.
2
There
on the poplars
we
hung our harps,
3
for
there our captors asked us for songs,
our
tormentors demanded songs of joy;
they
said, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"
4
How
can we sing the songs of the LORD
while
in a foreign land?
5
If
I forget you, O Jerusalem,
may
my right hand forget its skill.
6
May
my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth
if
I do not remember you,
if
I do not consider Jerusalem
my
highest joy.
7
Remember,
O LORD, what the Edomites did
on
the day Jerusalem fell.
"Tear
it down," they cried,
"tear
it down to its foundations!"
8
O
Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction,
happy
is he who repays you
for
what you have done to us--
9
he
who seizes your infants
and
dashes them against the rocks. [9]

Better a dry crust with peace and quiet
than
a house full of feasting, A with strife.
2
A
wise servant will rule over a disgraceful son,
and
will share the inheritance as one of the brothers.
3
The
crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,
but
the LORD tests the heart.
4
A
wicked man listens to evil lips;
a
liar pays attention to a malicious tongue.
5
He
who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker;
whoever
gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.
6
Children's
children are a crown to the aged,
and
parents are the pride of their children.
7
Arrogant
B lips are unsuited to a fool--
how
much worse lying lips to a ruler!
8
A
bribe is a charm to the one who gives it;
wherever
he turns, he succeeds.
9
He
who covers over an offense promotes love,
but
whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
10
A
rebuke impresses a man of discernment
more
than a hundred lashes a fool.
11
An
evil man is bent only on rebellion;
a
merciless official will be sent against him. [10]

Better
to meet a bear robbed of her cubs
than
a fool in his folly.
13
If
a man pays back evil for good,
evil
will never leave his house.
14
Starting
a quarrel is like breaching a dam;
so
drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

Acquitting
the guilty and condemning the innocent--
the
LORD detests them both.
16
Of
what use is money in the hand of a fool,
since
he has no desire to get wisdom?
17
A
friend loves at all times,
and
a brother is born for adversity.
18
A
man lacking in judgment strikes hands in pledge
and
puts up security for his neighbor.
19
He
who loves a quarrel loves sin;
he
who builds a high gate invites destruction.
20
A
man of perverse heart does not prosper;
he
whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble.
21
To
have a fool for a son brings grief;
there
is no joy for the father of a fool. [11]

A
cheerful heart is good medicine,
but
a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
23
A
wicked man accepts a bribe in secret
to
pervert the course of justice.
24
A
discerning man keeps wisdom in view,
but
a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the earth.
25
A
foolish son brings grief to his father
and
bitterness to the one who bore him.
26
It
is not good to punish an innocent man,
or
to flog officials for their integrity.
27
A
man of knowledge uses words with restraint,
and
a man of understanding is even-tempered.

Even
a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent,
and
discerning if he holds his tongue. [12]
OLD
TESTAMENT: DEUTERONOMY 32:28 - 52

They
are a nation without sense,
there
is no discernment in them.
29
If
only they were wise and would understand this
and
discern what their end will be!
30
How
could one man chase a thousand,
or
two put ten thousand to flight,
unless
their Rock had sold them,
unless
the LORD had given them up?
31
For
their rock is not like our Rock,
as
even our enemies concede.
32
Their
vine comes from the vine of Sodom
and
from the fields of Gomorrah.
Their
grapes are filled with poison,
and
their clusters with bitterness.
33
Their
wine is the venom of serpents,
the
deadly poison of cobras.
34
"Have I not kept this in reserve
and
sealed it in my vaults?
35
It
is mine to avenge; I will repay.
In
due time their foot will slip;
their
day of disaster is near
and
their doom rushes upon them."
36
The
LORD will judge his people [13]
and
have compassion on his servants
when
he sees their strength is gone
and
no one is left, slave or free.
37
He
will say: "Now where are their gods,
the
rock they took refuge in,
38
the
gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices
and
drank the wine of their drink offerings?
Let
them rise up to help you!
Let
them give you shelter!
39
"See now that I myself am He!
There
is no god besides me.
I
put to death and I bring to life,
I
have wounded and I will heal,
and
no one can deliver out of my hand.
40
I
lift my hand to heaven and declare:
As
surely as I live forever,
41
when
I sharpen my flashing sword
and
my hand grasps it in judgment,
I
will take vengeance on my adversaries
and
repay those who hate me.
42
I
will make my arrows drunk with blood,
while
my sword devours flesh:
the
blood of the slain and the captives,
the
heads of the enemy leaders."

Rejoice,
O nations, with his people, F G
for
he will avenge the blood of his servants;
he
will take vengeance on his enemies
and
make atonement for his land and people.

Moses
came with Joshua H son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in
the hearing of the people. 45 When Moses finished reciting all these
words to all Israel,

he
said to them, "Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this
day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of
this law.
47
They
are not just idle words for you--they are your life. By them you will live long
in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess."
48
On
that same day the LORD told Moses, 49"Go up
into the Abarim Range to Mount Nebo in Moab, across from Jericho, and view
Canaan, the land I am giving the Israelites as their own possession.
50 There on the mountain that you
have climbed you will die and be gathered to your people, just as your brother
Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people.
51 This is because both of you broke
faith with me in the presence of the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh
in the Desert of Zin and because you did not uphold my holiness among the
Israelites. 52 Therefore, you will
see the land only from a distance; you will not enter the land I am giving to
the people of Israel." [15]

TESTAMENT: LUKE 12:35 - 59

"Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,
36 like men waiting for their master
to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can
immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them
watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve,
will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.
38 It will be good for those
servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third
watch of the night. 39 But
understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was
coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
40
You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do
not expect him."
41
Peter
asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?"
42
The
Lord answered, "Who then is the faithful and wise
manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food
allowance at the proper time? 43 It
will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.
44 I tell you the truth, he will put
him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, `My master is
taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the menservants and
maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does
not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and
assign him a place with the unbelievers.
47
"That servant who knows his master's will and does not get [16]
ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows.
48
But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be
beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be
demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be
asked.
49
"I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
50
But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed!
51
Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.
52
From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three
against two and two against three. 53
They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against
daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and
daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
54
He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you
say, `It's going to rain,' and it does. 55
And when the south wind blows, you say, `It's going to be hot,' and it is.
56
Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky.
How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time?
57
"Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right? 58
As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be
reconciled to him on the way, or he may drag you off to the judge, and the judge
turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
59
I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
