Why,
A O LORD, do you stand far off?
Why
do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
2
In
his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,
who
are caught in the schemes he devises.
3
He
boasts of the cravings of his heart;
he
blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
4
In
his pride the wicked does not seek him;
in
all his thoughts there is no room for God.
5
His
ways are always prosperous;
he
is haughty and your laws are far from him;
he
sneers at all his enemies.
6
He
says to himself, "Nothing will shake me;
I'll
always be happy and never have trouble."
7
His
mouth is full of curses and lies and threats;
trouble
and evil are under his tongue.
8
He
lies in wait near the villages;
from
ambush he murders the innocent,
watching
in secret for his victims.
9
He
lies in wait like a lion in cover;
he
lies in wait to catch the helpless;
he
catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
10
His
victims are crushed, they collapse;
they
fall under his strength.

He
says to himself, "God has forgotten;
he

Arise,
LORD! Lift up your hand, O God.

not forget the helpless.

Why
does the wicked man revile God?

does he say to himself,
"He
won't call me to account"?

the arm of the wicked and evil man;

him to account for his wickedness

waited patiently for the LORD;

turned to me and heard my cry.

set my feet on a rock

put a new song in my mouth,
a
hymn of praise to our God.
Many
will see and fear
and
put their trust in the LORD.

Blessed
is the man
who
makes the LORD his trust,
who
does not look to the proud,
to
those who turn aside to false gods. A

Many,
O LORD my God,
are
the wonders you have done.
The
things you planned for us
no
one can recount to you;
were
I to speak and tell of them,
they
would be too many to declare.

and offering you did not desire,

LORD does not let the righteous go hungry

he thwarts the craving of the wicked.

Lazy
hands make a man poor,
but
diligent hands bring wealth.

He
who gathers crops in summer is a wise son,

he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.

Blessings
crown the head of the righteous,
but
violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. A

TESTAMENT: DEUTERONOMY 18:1 -
20:20
18
1
The
priests, who are Levites--indeed the whole tribe of Levi--are to have no
allotment or inheritance with Israel. They shall live on the offerings made to
the LORD by fire, for that is their inheritance. 2 They shall have no
inheritance among their brothers; the LORD is their inheritance, as he promised
them.
3
This
is the share due the priests from the people who sacrifice a bull or a sheep:
the shoulder, the jowls and the inner parts. 4 You are to give them
the firstfruits of your grain, new wine and oil, and the first wool from the
shearing of your sheep, 5 for the LORD your God has chosen them and
their descendants out of all your tribes to stand and minister in the LORD's
name always.
6
If
a Levite moves from one of your towns anywhere in Israel where he is living, and
comes in all earnestness to the place the LORD will choose, 7 he may
minister in the name of the LORD his God like all his fellow Levites who serve
there in the presence of the LORD. 8 He is to share equally in their
benefits, even though he has received money from the sale of family possessions.
9
When
you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the
detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among
you who sacrifices his son or daughter in A the fire, who practices
divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or
casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12
Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of
these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before
you.
13
You
must [12]
be blameless before the LORD your God.
14
The
nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination.
But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so. 15
The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your
own brothers. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked
of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, "Let us
not hear the voice of the LORD our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we
will die."
17
The
LORD said to me: "What they say is good.
18 I will raise up for them a
prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth,
and he will tell them everything I command him. 19 If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet
speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account. 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I
have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other
gods, must be put to death."
21
You
may say to yourselves, "How can we know when a message has not been spoken by
the LORD?" 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD
does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken.
That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him. [13]

1
When
the LORD your God has destroyed the nations whose land he is giving you, and
when you have driven them out and settled in their towns and houses, 2
then set aside for yourselves three cities centrally located in the land
the LORD your God is giving you to possess. 3 Build roads to them and
divide into three parts the land the LORD your God is giving you as an
inheritance, so that anyone who kills a man may flee there.
4
This
is the rule concerning the man who kills another and flees there to save his
life--one who kills his neighbor unintentionally, without malice aforethought.
5 For instance, a man may go into the forest with his neighbor to cut
wood, and as he swings his ax to fell a tree, the head may fly off and hit his
neighbor and kill him. That man may flee to one of these cities and save his
life. 6 Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue him in a rage,
overtake him if the distance is too great, and kill him even though he is not
deserving of death, since he did it to his neighbor without malice aforethought.
7 This is why I command you to set aside for yourselves three cities.
8
If
the LORD your God enlarges your territory, as he promised on oath to your
forefathers, and gives you the whole land he promised them, 9 because
you carefully follow all these laws I command you today--to love the LORD your
God and to walk always in his ways--then you are to set aside three more cities.
10
Do
this so that innocent blood will not be shed in your land, which the LORD your
God is giving you as your inheritance, and so that you will not be guilty of
bloodshed.
11
But
if a man hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him, assaults and kills him,
and then flees to one of these cities, 12 the [14]
elders of his town shall send for him, bring him back from the city, and hand
him over to the avenger of blood to die. 13 Show him no pity. You
must purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood, so that it may go
well with you.
14
Do
not move your neighbor's boundary stone set up by your predecessors in the
inheritance you receive in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess.
15
One
witness is not enough to convict a man accused of any crime or offense he may
have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three
witnesses.
16
If
a malicious witness takes the stand to accuse a man of a crime, 17
the two men involved in the dispute must stand in the presence of the LORD
before the priests and the judges who are in office at the time. 18
The judges must make a thorough investigation, and if the witness proves
to be a liar, giving false testimony against his brother, 19 then do
to him as he intended to do to his brother. You must purge the evil from among
you. 20 The rest of the people will hear of this and be afraid, and
never again will such an evil thing be done among you. 21 Show no
pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for
foot.

When
you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army
greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the LORD your God, who
brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you. 2 When you are about
to go into battle, the priest shall [15]
come forward and address the army. 3 He shall say: "Hear, O Israel,
today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or
afraid; do not be terrified or give way to panic before them. 4 For
the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your
enemies to give you victory."
5
The
officers shall say to the army: "Has anyone built a new house and not dedicated
it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else may dedicate it.
6 Has anyone planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy it? Let him go
home, or he may die in battle and someone else enjoy it. 7 Has anyone
become pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him go home, or he may die in
battle and someone else marry her."
8
Then
the officers shall add, "Is any man afraid or fainthearted? Let him go home so
that his brothers will not become disheartened too." 9 When the
officers have finished speaking to the army, they shall appoint commanders over
it.
10
When
you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. 11
If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject
to forced labor and shall work for you. 12 If they refuse to make
peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. 13 When
the LORD your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in
it. 14 As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything
else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. And you may use
the plunder the LORD your God gives you from your enemies. 15 This is
how you are to treat all [16]the
cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.
16
However,
in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance,
do not leave alive anything that breathes. 17 Completely destroy
A them--the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and
Jebusites--as the LORD your God has commanded you. 18 Otherwise, they
will teach you to follow all the detestable things they do in worshiping their
gods, and you will sin against the LORD your God.
19
When
you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it to capture it, do
not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, because you can eat their fruit.
Do not cut them down. Are the trees of the field people, that you should besiege
them? B
20
However,
you may cut down trees that you know are not fruit trees and use them to build
siege works until the city at war with you falls. [17]

TESTAMENT: LUKE 9:28 - 50

About
eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and
went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance
of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.
30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, 31 appeared in glorious
splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about
to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions
were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the
two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter
said to him, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three
shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." (He did not know what
he was saying.)
34
While
he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as
they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying,
"This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to
him." 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was
alone. The disciples kept this to themselves, and told no one at that time what
they had seen.
37
The
next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38
A man in the crowd called out, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for
he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams;
it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever
leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive
it out, but they could not."
41
"O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus
replied, "how long shall I stay with you and put up
with you? Bring your son here." [18]
42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground
in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil B spirit, healed the boy
and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the
greatness of God.
While
everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44
"Listen carefully to what I am about to tell
you: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men."
45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from
them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46
An
argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.
47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him
stand beside him.
48
Then
he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child
in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.
For he who is least among you all--he is the greatest."
49
"Master,"
said John, "we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop
him, because he is not one of us."
50
"Do not stop him," Jesus said, "for whoever is not against you is for you." [19]
