Genesis 1:1 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

JANUARY 23

PSALMS: 23, 53, 83, 113, 143

PROVERBS: 23

OLD TESTAMENT: JOSHUA 9:3 - 10:43

NEW TESTAMENT: LUKE 16:19 - 17:10

PSALMS: 23

1 The LORD is my shepherd:

I shall lack nothing.

2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside still waters.

3 He restores my soul.

He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil, for you are with me.

Your rod and your staff, they comfort me

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You have anointed my head with oil.

My cup runs over.

6 Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life,

And I shall dwell in the LORD's house forever.

PSALMS: 53

1 The fool has said in his heart,

"There is no God."

They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity.

There is no one who does good.

2 God looks down from heaven on the children of men,

To see if there are any who understood, Who seek after God.

3 Every one of them has gone back.

They have become filthy together.

There is no one who does good, no, not one.

4 Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge,

Who eat up my people as they eat bread,

And don't call on God?

5 There they were in great fear, where no fear was,

For God has scattered the bones of him who encamps against you.

You have put them to shame,

Because God has rejected them.

6 Oh that the yeshu`ah of Yisra'el would come out of Tziyon!

When God brings back the captivity of his people,

Then shall Ya`akov rejoice.

Yisra'el shall be glad.

PSALMS: 83

1 God, don't keep silent.

Don't keep silent, and don't be still, God.

2 For, behold, your enemies are stirred up.

Those who hate you have lifted up their heads.

3 They conspire with cunning against your people.

They plot against your cherished ones.

4 "Come," they say, "and let us destroy them as a nation,

That the name of Yisra'el may be remembered no more."

5 For they have conspired together with one mind.

They form an alliance against you.

6 The tents of Edom and the Yishme`elim;

Mo'av, and the Hagrim;

7 Geval, `Ammon, and `Amalek;

Peleshet with the inhabitants of Tzor;

8 Ashshur also is joined with them.

They have helped the children of Lot.

Selah.

9 Do to them as you did to Midyan,

As to Sisera, as to Yavin, at the river Kishon;

10 Who perished at `En-Dor,

Who became as dung for the eretz.

11 Make their nobles like `Orev and Ze'ev;

Yes, all their princes like Zevach and Tzalmunnah;

12 Who said, "Let us take possession

Of God's pasturelands."

13 My God, make them like tumbleweed;

Like chaff before the wind.

14 As the fire that burns the forest,

As the flame that sets the mountains on fire,

15 So pursue them with your tempest,

Terrify them with your storm.

16 Fill their faces with confusion,

That they may seek your name, LORD.

17 Let them be put to shame and dismayed forever.

Yes, let them be confounded and perish;

18 That they may know that you alone, whose name is the LORD,

Are Ha`Elyon over all the eretz.

PSALMS: 113

1 Praise the LORD!

Praise, you servants of the LORD,

Praise the name of the LORD.

2 Blessed be the name of the LORD,

From this time forth and forevermore.

3 From the rising of the sun to the going down of the same,

The LORD's name is to be praised.

4 The LORD is high above all nations,

His glory above the heavens.

5 Who is like the LORD, our God,

Who has his seat on high,

6 Who stoops down to see in heaven and in the eretz?

7 He raises up the poor out of the dust.

Lifts up the needy from the ash heap;

8 That he may set him with princes,

Even with the princes of his people.

9 He settles the barren woman in her home,

As a joyful mother of children.

Praise the LORD!

PSALMS: 143

1 Hear my prayer, LORD.

Listen to my petitions.

In your faithfulness and righteousness, relieve me.

2 Don't enter into judgment with your servant,

For in your sight no man living is righteous.

3 For the enemy pursues my soul.

He has struck my life down to the ground.

He has made me live in dark places,

as those who have been long dead.

4 Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me.

My heart within me is desolate.

5 I remember the days of old.

I meditate on all your doings.

I contemplate the work of your hands.

6 I spread forth my hands to you.

My soul thirsts for you, like a parched land.

Selah.

7 Hurry to answer me, LORD.

My spirit fails.

Don't hide your face from me,

So that I don't become like those who go down into the pit.

8 Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning,

For I trust in you.

Cause me to know the way in which I should walk,

For I lift up my soul to you.

9 Deliver me, LORD, from my enemies.

I flee to you to hide me.

10 Teach me to do your will,

For you are my God.

Your Spirit is good.

Lead me in the land of uprightness.

11 Revive me, LORD, for your name's sake.

In your righteousness, bring my soul out of trouble.

12 In your loving kindness, cut off my enemies,

And destroy all those who afflict my soul,

For I am your servant.

PROVERBS: 23

1 When you sit to eat with a ruler,

Consider diligently what is before you;

2 Put a knife to your throat,

If you are a man given to appetite.

3 Don't be desirous of his dainties,

Seeing they are deceitful food.

4 Don't weary yourself to be rich.

In your wisdom, show restraint

5 Why do you set your eyes on that which is not?

For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.

6 Don't eat the food of him who has a stingy eye,

And don't crave his delicacies:

7 For as he thinks about the cost, so he is.

"Eat and drink!" he says to you,

But his heart is not with you.

8 The morsel which you have eaten you shall vomit up,

And lose your good words.

9 Don't speak in the ears of a fool,

For he will despise the wisdom of your words.

10 Don't move the ancient boundary stone.

Don't encroach on the fields of the fatherless:

11 For their Defender is strong.

He will plead their case against you.

12 Apply your heart to instruction,

And your ears to the words of knowledge.

13 Don't withhold correction from a child.

If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.

14 Punish him with the rod,

And save his soul from She'ol

15 My son, if your heart is wise,

Then my heart will be glad, even mine:

16 Yes, my heart will rejoice,

When your lips speak what is right.

17 Don't let your heart envy sinners;

But rather fear the LORD all the day long.

18 Indeed surely there is a future hope,

And your hope will not be cut off.

19 Listen, my son, and be wise,

And keep your heart on the right path

20 Don't be among ones drinking too much wine,

Or those who gorge themselves on meat:

21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor;

And drowsiness clothes them in rags

22 Listen to your father who gave you life,

And don't despise your mother when she is old.

23 Buy the truth, and don't sell it:

Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.

24 The father of the righteous has great joy.

Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.

25 Let your father and your mother be glad!

Let her who bore you rejoice!

26 My son, give me your heart;

And let your eyes keep in my ways.

27 For a prostitute is a deep pit;

And a wayward wife is a narrow well.

28 Yes, she lies in wait like a robber,

And increases the unfaithful among men.

29 Who has woe?

Who has sorrow?

Who has strife?

Who has complaints?

Who has needless bruises?

Who has bloodshot eyes?

30 Those who stay long at the wine;

Those who go to seek out mixed wine.

31 Don't look at the wine when it is red,

When it sparkles in the cup,

When it goes down smoothly:

32 At the last it bites like a snake,

And poisons like a viper.

33 Your eyes will see strange things,

And your mind will imagine confusing things.

34 Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea,

Or as he who lies on top of the rigging:

35 "They hit me, and I was not hurt;

They beat me, and I don't feel it!

When will I wake up?

I can do it again.

I can find another."

OLD TESTAMENT: JOSHUA 9:3 - 10:43

9:3 But when the inhabitants of Giv`on heard what Yehoshua had done to Yericho and to `Ai, 4 they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and wine-skins, old and torn and bound up, 5 and old and patched shoes on their feet, and old garments on them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and was become moldy. 6 They went to Yehoshua to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Yisra'el, We are come from a far country: now therefore make you a covenant with us. 7  The men of Yisra'el said to the Hivvi, What if you dwell among us; and how shall we make a covenant with you? 8 They said to Yehoshua, We are your servants. Yehoshua said to them, Who are you? and from whence come you? 9 They said to him, From a very far country your servants are come because of the name of the LORD your God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Mitzrayim, 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amori, who were beyond the Yarden, to Sichon king of Heshbon, and to `Og king of Bashan, who was at `Ashtarot. 11 Our Zakenim and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and tell them, We are your servants: and now make you a covenant with us. 12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and is become moldy: 13 and these wine-skins, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they are torn: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. 14 The men took of their provision, and didn't ask counsel at the mouth of the LORD. 15 Yehoshua made shalom with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation swore to them. 16 It happened at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them. 17 The children of Yisra'el journeyed, and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Giv`on, and Kefirah, and Be'erot, and Kiryat-Ye`arim. 18 The children of Yisra'el didn't strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Yisra'el. All the congregation murmured against the princes. 19 But all the princes said to all the congregation, We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Yisra'el: now therefore we may not touch them. 20 This we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them. 21 The princes said to them, Let them live: so they became wood cutters and drawers of water to all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them. 22 Yehoshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, Why have you deceived us, saying, We are very far from you; when you dwell among us? 23 Now therefore you are cursed, and there shall never fail to be of you bondservants, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God. 24 They answered Yehoshua, and said, Because it was certainly told your servants, how that the LORD your God commanded his servant Moshe to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; therefore we were sore afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing. 25 Now, behold, we are in your hand: as it seems good and right to you to do to us, do. 26 So did he to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Yisra'el, that they didn't kill them.

27 That day Yehoshua made those wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, to this day, in the place which he should choose.

10:1 Now it happened, when Adoni-Tzedek king of Yerushalayim heard how Yehoshua had taken `Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Yericho and her king, so he had done to `Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Giv`on had made shalom with Yisra'el, and were among them; 2 that they feared greatly, because Giv`on was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than `Ai, and all the men of it were mighty. 3 Therefore Adoni-Tzedek king of Yerushalayim sent to Hoham king of Hevron, and to Pir'am king of Yarmut, and to Yafia king of Lakhish, and to Devir king of `Eglon, saying, 4 Come up to me, and help me, and let us strike Giv`on; for it has made shalom with Yehoshua and with the children of Yisra'el. 5 Therefore the five kings of the Amori, the king of Yerushalayim, the king of Hevron, the king of Yarmut, the king of Lakhish, the king of `Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped against Giv`on, and made war against it. 6 The men of Giv`on sent to Yehoshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Don't slack your hand from your servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amori that dwell in the hill-country are gathered together against us. 7 So Yehoshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. 8 The LORD said to Yehoshua, Don't fear them: for I have delivered them into your hands; there shall not a man of them stand before you. 9 Yehoshua therefore came on them suddenly; [for] he went up from Gilgal all the night. 10 The LORD confused them before Yisra'el, and he killed them with a great slaughter at Giv`on, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beit-Horon, and struck them to `Azeka, and to Makkedah. 11 It happened, as they fled from before Yisra'el, while they were at the descent of Beit-Horon, that the LORD cast down great stones from the sky on them to `Azeka, and they died: they were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Yisra'el killed with the sword. 12 Then spoke Yehoshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amori before the children of Yisra'el; and he said in the sight of Yisra'el, Sun, stand you still on Giv`on; You, Moon, in the valley of Ayalon. 13 The sun stood still, and the moon stayed, Until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Isn't this written in the book of Yashar? The sun stayed in the midst of the sky, and didn't hurry to go down about a whole day. 14 There was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD listened to the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Yisra'el. 15 Yehoshua returned, and all Yisra'el with him, to the camp to Gilgal. 16 These five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. 17 It was told Yehoshua, saying, The five kings are found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 18 Yehoshua said, Roll great stones to the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to keep them: 19 but don't stay; pursue after your enemies, and strike the hindmost of them; don't allow them to enter into their cities: for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hand. 20 It happened, when Yehoshua and the children of Yisra'el had made an end of killing them with a very great slaughter, until they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, 21 that all the people returned to the camp to Yehoshua at Makkedah in shalom: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Yisra'el. 22 Then said Yehoshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth those five kings to me out of the cave. 23 They did so, and brought forth those five kings to him out of the cave, the king of Yerushalayim, the king of Hevron, the king of Yarmut, the king of Lakhish, the king of `Eglon. 24 It happened, when they brought forth those kings to Yehoshua, that Yehoshua called for all the men of Yisra'el, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who went with him, Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings. They came near, and put their feet on the necks of them. 25 Yehoshua said to them, Don't be afraid, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom you fight. 26 Afterward Yehoshua struck them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging on the trees until the evening. 27  It happened at the time of the going down of the sun, that Yehoshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave in which they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, to this very day. 28 Yehoshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and the king of it: he utterly destroyed them and all the souls who were therein; he left none remaining; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Yericho. 29 Yehoshua passed from Makkedah, and all Yisra'el with him, to Livna, and fought against Livna: 30 and the LORD delivered it also, and the king of it, into the hand of Yisra'el; and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls who were therein; he left none remaining in it; and he did to the king of it as he had done to the king of Yericho. 31 Yehoshua passed from Livna, and all Yisra'el with him, to Lakhish, and encamped against it, and fought against it: 32 and the LORD delivered Lakhish into the hand of Yisra'el; and he took it on the second day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls who were therein, according to all that he had done to Livna. 33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lakhish; and Yehoshua struck him and his people, until he had left him none remaining. 34 Yehoshua passed from Lakhish, and all Yisra'el with him, to `Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it; 35 and they took it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls who were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lakhish. 36 Yehoshua went up from `Eglon, and all Yisra'el with him, to Hevron; and they fought against it: 37 and they took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and the king of it, and all the cities of it, and all the souls who were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to `Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls who were therein. 38 Yehoshua returned, and all Yisra'el with him, to Devir, and fought against it: 39 and he took it, and the king of it, and all the cities of it; and they struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls who were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hevron, so he did to Devir, and to the king of it; as he had done also to Livna, and to the king of it. 40 So Yehoshua struck all the land, the hill-country, and the South, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, commanded. 41 Yehoshua struck them from Kadesh-Barnea even to `Aza, and all the country of Goshen, even to Giv`on. 42 All these kings and their land did Yehoshua take at one time, because the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, fought for Yisra'el. 43 Yehoshua returned, and all Yisra'el with him, to the camp to Gilgal.

NEW TESTAMENT: LUKE 16:19 - 17:10

16:19 "Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day. 20 A certain beggar, named El'azar, was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. Yes, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 It happened that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels to Avraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried. 23 In She'ol, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Avraham far off, and El'azar at his bosom. 24 He cried and said, 'Father Avraham, have mercy on me, and send El'azar, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue! For I am in anguish in this flame.' 25 "But Avraham said, 'Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and El'azar, in like manner, bad things. But now here he is comforted and you are in anguish. 26 Besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, and that none may cross over from there to us.' 27 "He said, 'I ask you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house; 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' 29"But Avraham said to him, 'They have Moshe and the prophets. Let them listen to them.' 30 "He said, 'No, father Avraham, but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' 31 "He said to him, 'If they don't listen to Moshe and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if one rises from the dead.'"

17:1 He said to the talmidim, "It is impossible that occasions of stumbling should not come, but woe to him through whom they come! 2 It would be better for him if a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, rather than that he should cause one of these little ones to stumble. 3 Be careful. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him. If he repents, forgive him. 4 If he sins against you seven times in the day, and seven times turns again, saying, 'I repent,' you shall forgive him." 5 The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." 6 The Lord said, "If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you would tell this sycamore tree, 'Be uprooted, and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. 7 But who is there of you, having a servant plowing or keeping sheep, that will say, when he comes in from the field, 'Come immediately and sit down at the table,' 8 and will not rather tell him, 'Prepare my supper, clothe yourself properly, and serve me, while I eat and drink. Afterward you shall eat and drink?'

9 Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded? I think not. 10 Even so you also, when you have done all the things that are commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy servants. We have done our duty.'"

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
