PSALMS: 8
For
the director of music. According to gittith. A A psalm of
David.
1
O LORD, our Lord,
how
majestic is your name in all the earth!
You
have set your glory
above
the heavens.
2
From the lips of children and infants
you
have ordained praise B
because
of your enemies,
to
silence the foe and the avenger.
3
When I consider your heavens,
the
work of your fingers,
the
moon and the stars,
which
you have set in place,
4
what is man that you are mindful of him,
the
son of man that you care for him?
5
You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings C
and
crowned him with glory and honor.
6
You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
you
put everything under his feet:
7
all flocks and herds,
and
the beasts of the field,
8
the birds of the air,
and
the fish of the sea,
all
that swim the paths of the seas. [1]
9
O LORD, our Lord,
how
majestic is your name in all the earth! [2]
PSALMS: 38
A
psalm of David. A petition.
1
O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger
or
discipline me in your wrath.
2
For your arrows have pierced me,
and
your hand has come down upon me.
3
Because of your wrath there is no health in my body;
my
bones have no soundness because of my sin.
4
My guilt has overwhelmed me
like
a burden too heavy to bear.
5
My wounds fester and are loathsome
because
of my sinful folly.
6
I am bowed down and brought very low;
all
day long I go about mourning.
7
My back is filled with searing pain;
there
is no health in my body.
8
I am feeble and utterly crushed;
I
groan in anguish of heart.
9
All my longings lie open before you, O Lord;
my
sighing is not hidden from you.
10
My heart pounds, my strength fails me;
even
the light has gone from my eyes.
11
My friends and companions avoid me because of my
wounds;
my
neighbors stay far away.
12
Those who seek my life set their traps,
those
who would harm me talk of my ruin;
all
day long they plot deception. [3]
13
I am like a deaf man, who cannot hear,
like
a mute, who cannot open his mouth;
14
I have become like a man who does not hear,
whose
mouth can offer no reply.
15
I wait for you, O LORD;
you
will answer, O Lord my God.
16
For I said, "Do not let them gloat
or
exalt themselves over me when my foot slips."
17
For I am about to fall,
and
my pain is ever with me.
18
I confess my iniquity;
I
am troubled by my sin.
19
Many are those who are my vigorous enemies;
those
who hate me without reason are numerous.
20
Those who repay my good with evil
slander
me when I pursue what is good.
21
O LORD, do not forsake me;
be
not far from me, O my God.
22
Come quickly to help me,
O
Lord my Savior. [4]
PSALMS: 68
For
the director of music. Of David. A psalm. A song.
1
May God arise, may his enemies be scattered;
may
his foes flee before him.
2
As smoke is blown away by the wind,
may
you blow them away;
as
wax melts before the fire,
may
the wicked perish before God.
3
But may the righteous be glad
and
rejoice before God;
may
they be happy and joyful.
4
Sing to God, sing praise to his name,
extol
him who rides on the clouds A--
his
name is the LORD--
and
rejoice before him.
5
A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,
is
God in his holy dwelling.
6
God sets the lonely in families, B
he
leads forth the prisoners with singing;
but
the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
7
When you went out before your people, O God,
when
you marched through the wasteland,
Selah
8
the earth shook,
the
heavens poured down rain,
before
God, the One of Sinai,
before
God, the God of Israel.
9
You gave abundant showers, O God;
you
refreshed your weary inheritance. [5]
10
Your people settled in it,
and
from your bounty, O God, you provided for the poor.
11
The Lord announced the word,
and
great was the company of those who proclaimed it:
12
"Kings and armies
flee in haste;
in the camps men divide the plunder.
Even
while you sleep among the campfires, C
the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver,
its feathers with shining gold."
14
When the Almighty D scattered the kings in
the land,
it
was like snow fallen on Zalmon.
15
The mountains of Bashan are majestic mountains;
rugged
are the mountains of Bashan.
16
Why gaze in envy, O rugged mountains,
at
the mountain where God chooses to reign,
where
the LORD himself will dwell forever?
17
The chariots of God are tens of thousands
and
thousands of thousands;
the
Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.
18
When you ascended on high,
you
led captives in your train;
you
received gifts from men,
even
from E the rebellious--
that
you, F O LORD God, might dwell there.
19
Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior,
who
daily bears our burdens.
Selah
20
Our God is a God who saves;
from
the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death.
[6]
21
Surely God will crush the heads of his enemies,
the
hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins.
22
The Lord says, "I
will bring them from Bashan;
I will bring them from the depths of the sea,
23 that you may plunge your feet in the blood of your foes,
while the tongues of your dogs have their share."
24
Your procession has come into view, O God,
the
procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.
25
In front are the singers, after them the musicians;
with
them are the maidens playing tambourines.
26
Praise God in the great congregation;
praise
the LORD in the assembly of Israel.
27
There is the little tribe of Benjamin, leading them,
there
the great throng of Judah's princes,
and
there the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali.
28
Summon your power, O God G;
show
us your strength, O God, as you have done before.
29
Because of your temple at Jerusalem
kings
will bring you gifts.
30
Rebuke the beast among the reeds,
the
herd of bulls among the calves of the nations.
Humbled,
may it bring bars of silver.
Scatter
the nations who delight in war.
31
Envoys will come from Egypt;
CushH
will submit herself to God.
32
Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth,
sing
praise to the Lord,
Selah
[7]
33
to him who rides the ancient skies above,
who
thunders with mighty voice.
34
Proclaim the power of God,
whose
majesty is over Israel,
whose
power is in the skies.
35
You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary;
the
God of Israel gives power and strength to his people.
Praise
be to God! [8]
PSALMS: 98
A
psalm.
1
Sing to the LORD a new song,
for
he has done marvelous things;
his
right hand and his holy arm
have
worked salvation for him.
2
The LORD has made his salvation known
and
revealed his righteousness to the nations.
3
He has remembered his love
and
his faithfulness to the house of Israel;
all
the ends of the earth have seen
the
salvation of our God.
4
Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth,
burst
into jubilant song with music;
5make
music to the LORD with the harp,
with
the harp and the sound of singing,
6
with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn--
shout
for joy before the LORD, the King.
7
Let the sea resound, and everything in it,
the
world, and all who live in it.
8
Let the rivers clap their hands,
let
the mountains sing together for joy;
9
let them sing before the LORD,
for
he comes to judge the earth.
He
will judge the world in righteousness
and
the peoples with equity. [9]
PSALMS: 128
A
song of ascents.
1
Blessed are all who fear the LORD,
who
walk in his ways.
2
You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings
and prosperity will be yours.
3
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within
your house;
your
sons will be like olive shoots
around
your table.
4
Thus is the man blessed
who
fears the LORD.
5
May the LORD bless you from Zion
all
the days of your life;
may
you see the prosperity of Jerusalem,
6
and may you live to see your children's children.
Peace
be upon Israel. [10]
PROVERBS: 8
8
1 Does not wisdom call
out?
Does
not understanding raise her voice?
2
On the heights along the way,
where
the paths meet, she takes her stand;
3
beside the gates leading into the city,
at
the entrances, she cries aloud:
4
"To you, O men, I
call out;
I raise my voice to all mankind.
5 You who
are simple, gain prudence;
you who are foolish, gain understanding.
6
Listen, for I have worthy things to say;
I open my lips to speak what is right.
7 My mouth
speaks what is true,
for my lips detest wickedness.
8 All the
words of my mouth are just;
none of them is crooked or perverse.
9 To the
discerning all of them are right;
they are faultless to those who have knowledge.
10 Choose my
instruction instead of silver,
knowledge rather than choice gold,
11 for wisdom
is more precious than rubies,
and nothing you desire can compare with her.
12
"I, wisdom, dwell
together with prudence;
I possess knowledge and discretion.
13 To fear
the LORD is to hate evil;
I hate pride and arrogance,
evil behavior and perverse speech.
14 Counsel
and sound judgment are mine;
I have understanding and power.
15 By me
kings reign
and rulers make laws that are just;
and all nobles who rule on earth. A
17 I love
those who love me,
and those who seek me find me.
18 With me
are riches and honor,
enduring wealth and prosperity.
19
My fruit is better than fine gold;
what I yield surpasses choice silver.
20 I walk in
the way of righteousness,
along the paths of justice,
21 bestowing
wealth on those who love me
and making their treasuries full.
22
"The LORD brought me
forth as the first of his works, BC
before his deeds of old;
23 I was
appointed D from
eternity,
from the beginning, before the world began.
24 When there
were no oceans, I was given birth,
when there were no springs abounding with water;
25 before the
mountains were settled in place,
before the hills, I was given birth,
26 before he
made the earth or its fields
or any of the dust of the world.
27 I was
there when he set the heavens in place,
when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,
28 when he
established the clouds above
and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,
29 when he
gave the sea its boundary
so the waters would not overstep his command,
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.
30 Then I was the craftsman at his side.
I was filled with delight day after day,
rejoicing always in his presence,
31 rejoicing
in his whole world
and delighting in mankind. [12]
32
"Now then, my sons,
listen to me;
blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Listen to
my instruction and be wise;
do not ignore it.
34 Blessed is
the man who listens to me,
watching daily at my doors,
waiting at my doorway.
35 For
whoever finds me finds life
and receives favor from the LORD.
36 But
whoever fails to find me harms himself;
all who hate me love death." [13]
OLD TESTAMENT: JEREMIAH 51:54 - 52:324
54 "The
sound of a cry comes from Babylon,
the sound of great
destruction
from the land of the
Babylonians. H
55 The
LORD will destroy Babylon;
he will silence her
noisy din.
Waves of enemies will
rage like great waters;
the roar of their voices
will resound.
56 A
destroyer will come against Babylon;
her warriors will be
captured,
and their bows will be
broken.
For the LORD is a God of
retribution;
he will repay in full.
57 I
will make her officials and wise men drunk,
her governors, officers
and warriors as well;
they will sleep forever
and not awake,"
declares the King, whose
name is the LORD Almighty.
58 This
is what the LORD Almighty says:
"Babylon's thick wall will be leveled
and her high
gates set on fire;
the peoples
exhaust themselves for nothing,
the nations'
labor is only fuel for the flames."
59 This
is the message Jeremiah gave to the staff officer Seraiah son of Neriah, the
son of Mahseiah, when he went to Babylon with Zedekiah king of Judah n the
fourth year of his reign. 60 Jeremiah had written on a scroll about
all the disasters that would come upon Babylon--all that had been recorded
concerning Babylon. 61 He said to Seraiah, "When you get to
Babylon, see that you read all these words aloud. 62 Then say, `O [14]
LORD, you have said you will destroy this place, so that neither man nor animal
will live in it; it will be desolate forever.' 63 When you finish
reading this scroll, tie a stone to it and throw it into the Euphrates.
64 Then
say, `So will Babylon sink to rise no more because of the disaster I will bring
upon her. And her people will fall.'"
The words of Jeremiah
end here.
52 1
Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king,
and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother's name was Hamutal
daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah. 2 He did evil in the eyes
of the LORD, just as Jehoiakim had done. 3 It was because of the
LORD's anger that all this happened to Jerusalem and Judah, and in the end he
thrust them from his presence.
Now Zedekiah rebelled
against the king of Babylon.
4 So
in the ninth year of Zedekiah's reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army.
They camped outside the city and built siege works all around it. 5 The
city was kept under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.
6 By
the ninth day of the fourth month the famine in the city had become so severe
that there was no food for the people to eat. 7 Then the city wall
was broken through, and the whole army fled. They left the city at night
through the gate between the two walls near the king's garden, though the
Babylonians A were surrounding the city. They fled toward the
Arabah, B 8 but the Babylonian C army pursued
King Zedekiah and overtook him in the plains of Jericho. All his soldiers were
separated from him and scattered, 9 and he was captured.
He was taken to the king
of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he pronounced sentence on
him. 10 There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of
Zedekiah before his eyes; he also killed all the officials of Judah. 11 Then
he put out Zedekiah's eyes, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to
Babylon, where he put him in prison till the day of his death.
12 On
the tenth day of the fifth month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king
of Babylon, Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard, who served the king of
Babylon, came to Jerusalem. 13 He set fire to the temple of the
LORD, the royal palace and all the houses of Jerusalem. Every important
building he burned down. 14 The whole Babylonian army under the
commander of the imperial guard broke down all the walls around Jerusalem. 15
Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard carried into exile some of the
poorest people and those who remained [15]
in the city, along with the rest of the craftsmen D and those who
had gone over to the king of Babylon. 16 But Nebuzaradan left behind
the rest of the poorest people of the land to work the vineyards and fields.
17 The
Babylonians broke up the bronze pillars, the movable stands and the bronze Sea
that were at the temple of the LORD and they carried all the bronze to Babylon.
18 They also took away the pots, shovels, wick trimmers, sprinkling
bowls, dishes and all the bronze articles used in the temple service. 19 The
commander of the imperial guard took away the basins, censers, sprinkling
bowls, pots, lampstands, dishes and bowls used for drink offerings--all that
were made of pure gold or silver.
20 The
bronze from the two pillars, the Sea and the twelve bronze bulls under it, and
the movable stands, which King Solomon had made for the temple of the LORD, was
more than could be weighed. 21 Each of the pillars was eighteen
cubits high and twelve cubits in circumference E; each was four
fingers thick, and hollow. 22 The bronze capital on top of the one
pillar was five cubitsF high and was decorated with a network and
pomegranates of bronze all around. The other pillar, with its pomegranates, was
similar. 23 There were ninety-six pomegranates on the sides; the
total number of pomegranates above the surrounding network was a hundred.
24 The
commander of the guard took as prisoners Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah
the priest next in rank and the three doorkeepers. 25 Of those still
in the city, he took the officer in charge of the fighting men, and seven royal
advisers. He also took the secretary who was chief officer in charge of
conscripting the people of the land and sixty of his men who were found in the
city. 26 Nebuzaradan the commander took them all and brought them to
the king of Babylon at Riblah. 27 There at Riblah, in the land of
Hamath, the king had them executed.
So Judah went into
captivity, away from her land. 28 This is the number of the people
Nebuchadnezzar carried into exile:
in the seventh year,
3,023 Jews;
29 in
Nebuchadnezzar's eighteenth year,
832 people from
Jerusalem;
30 in
his twenty-third year,
745 Jews taken into
exile by Nebuzaradan the commander of the imperial guard.
There were 4,600 people
in all.
31 In
the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the year
Evil-Merodach G became king of Babylon, he released Jehoiachin king
of Judah and freed him from prison on the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth
month. 32 He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of [16]
honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon. 33
So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life
ate regularly at the king's table. 34 Day by day the king of Babylon
gave Jehoiachin a regular allowance as long as he lived, till the day of his
death. [17]
OLD TESTAMENT: TITUS 3:1 - 15
3 1
Remind the people to be subject to rulers and
authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 2 to
slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility
toward all men.
3 At
one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds
of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating
one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior
appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had
done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and
renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously
through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by
his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This
is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those
who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is
good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.
9 But
avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about
the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. 10 Warn a divisive
person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do
with him. 11 You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful;
he is self-condemned.
12 As
soon as I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis,
because I have decided to winter there. 13 Do everything you can to
help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way and see that they have
everything they need. 14 Our people must learn to devote themselves
to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and
not live unproductive lives.
15 Everyone
with me sends you greetings. Greet those who love us in the faith.
Grace be with you all. [18]
