For
the director of music. A psalm of David.
1
May
the LORD answer you when you are in distress;
may
the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
2
May
he send you help from the sanctuary
and
grant you support from Zion.
3
May
he remember all your sacrifices
and
accept your burnt offerings.
Selah
4
May
he give you the desire of your heart
and
make all your plans succeed.
5
We
will shout for joy when you are victorious
and
will lift up our banners in the name of our God.
May
the LORD grant all your requests.
6
Now
I know that the LORD saves his anointed;
he
answers him from his holy heaven
with
the saving power of his right hand.
7
Some
trust in chariots and some in horses,
but
we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
8
They
are brought to their knees and fall,
but
we rise up and stand firm.
9
O
LORD, save the king!
Answer
A us when we call! [1]

A
psalm of Asaph.
1
The
Mighty One, God, the LORD,
speaks
and summons the earth
from
the rising of the sun to the place where it sets.
2
From
Zion, perfect in beauty,
God
shines forth.
3
Our
God comes and will not be silent;
a
fire devours before him,
and
around him a tempest rages.
4
He
summons the heavens above,
and
the earth, that he may judge his people:
5
"Gather to me my consecrated
ones,
who
made a covenant with me by sacrifice."
6
And
the heavens proclaim his righteousness,
for
God himself is judge.
Selah
7
"Hear, O my people, and I will
speak,
O
Israel, and I will testify against you:
I
am God, your God.
8 I
do not rebuke you for your sacrifices
or
your burnt offerings, which are ever before me.
9 I
have no need of a bull from your stall
or
of goats from your pens,
10 for
every animal of the forest is mine,
and
the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I
know every bird in the mountains,
and
the creatures of the field are mine.
12 If
I were hungry I would not tell you, [2]
for
the world is mine, and all that is in it.
13 Do
I eat the flesh of bulls
or
drink the blood of goats?
14 Sacrifice
thank offerings to God,
fulfill
your vows to the Most High,
15 and
call upon me in the day of trouble;
I
will deliver you, and you will honor me."
16
But
to the wicked, God says:
"What right have you to recite my
laws
or
take my covenant on your lips?
17 You
hate my instruction
and
cast my words behind you.
18 When
you see a thief, you join with him;
you
throw in your lot with adulterers.
19 You
use your mouth for evil
and
harness your tongue to deceit.
20 You
speak continually against your brother
and
slander your own mother's son.
21 These
things you have done and I kept silent;
you
thought I was altogether A
like you.
But
I will rebuke you
and
accuse you to your face.
22
"Consider this, you who forget
God,
or
I will tear you to pieces, with none to rescue:

who sacrifices thank offerings honors me,

he prepares the way

For
the director of music. To the tune of "The Lilies of the Covenant." Of Asaph. A
psalm.
1
Hear
us, O Shepherd of Israel,
you
who lead Joseph like a flock;
you
who sit enthroned between the cherubim, shine forth
2
before
Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.
Awaken
your might;
come
and save us.
3
Restore
us, O God;
make
your face shine upon us,
that
we may be saved.
4
O
LORD God Almighty,
how
long will your anger smolder
against
the prayers of your people?
5
You
have fed them with the bread of tears;
you
have made them drink tears by the bowlful.
6
You
have made us a source of contention to our neighbors,
and
our enemies mock us.
7
Restore
us, O God Almighty;
make
your face shine upon us,
that
we may be saved.
8
You
brought a vine out of Egypt;
you
drove out the nations and planted it.
9
You
cleared the ground for it,
and
it took root and filled the land.
10
The
mountains were covered with its shade,
the
mighty cedars with its branches. [4]
11
It
sent out its boughs to the Sea, A
its
shoots as far as the River. B
12
Why
have you broken down its walls
so
that all who pass by pick its grapes?
13
Boars
from the forest ravage it
and
the creatures of the field feed on it.
14
Return
to us, O God Almighty!
Look
down from heaven and see!
Watch
over this vine,
15
the
root your right hand has planted,
the
son C you have raised up for yourself.
16
Your
vine is cut down, it is burned with fire;
at
your rebuke your people perish.
17
Let
your hand rest on the man at your right hand,
the
son of man you have raised up for yourself.
18
Then
we will not turn away from you;
revive
us, and we will call on your name.
19
Restore
us, O LORD God Almighty;
make
your face shine upon us,
that
we may be saved. [5]
PSALMS: 110
Of
David. A psalm.
1
The
LORD says to my Lord:
"Sit at my right hand
until
I make your enemies
a
footstool for your feet."
2
The
LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion;
you
will rule in the midst of your enemies.
3
Your
troops will be willing
on
your day of battle.
Arrayed
in holy majesty,
from
the womb of the dawn
you
will receive the dew of your youth. A
4
The
LORD has sworn
and
will not change his mind:
"You are a priest forever,
in
the order of Melchizedek."
5
The
Lord is at your right hand;
he
will crush kings on the day of his wrath.
6
He
will judge the nations, heaping up the dead
and
crushing the rulers of the whole earth.
7
He
will drink from a brook beside the way B;
therefore
he will lift up his head. [6]

Rescue
me, O LORD, from evil men;
protect
me from men of violence,
2
who
devise evil plans in their hearts
and
stir up war every day.
3
They
make their tongues as sharp as a serpent's;

Keep

who

they
have spread out the cords of their net

6
O
LORD, I say to you, "You are my God."
Hear,
O LORD, my cry for mercy.
7
O
Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer,
who
shields my head in the day of battle--
8
do
not grant the wicked their desires, O LORD;
do
not let their plans succeed,
or
they will become proud.
Selah
9
Let
the heads of those who surround me
be
covered with the trouble their lips have caused.
10Let
burning coals fall upon them;
may
they be thrown into the fire,
into
miry pits, never to rise. [7]
11
Let
slanderers not be established in the land;
may
disaster hunt down men of violence.
12
I
know that the LORD secures justice for the poor

Surely
the righteous will praise your name

the upright will live before you. [8]

OLD
TESTAMENT: GENESIS 20:1 - 22:24
20
1
Now
Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between
Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar, 2 and there Abraham
said of his wife Sarah, "She is my sister." Then Abimelech king of Gerar sent
for Sarah and took her.
3
But
God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him, "You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken;
she is a married woman."
4
Now
Abimelech had not gone near her, so he said, "Lord, will you destroy an innocent
nation? 5 Did he not say to me, `She is my sister,' and didn't she
also say, `He is my brother'? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean
hands."
6
Then
God said to him in the dream, "Yes, I know you did
this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me.
That is why I did not let you touch her. 7
Now return the man's wife, for he is a
prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return
her, you may be sure that you and all yours will die."
8
Early
the next morning Abimelech summoned all his officials, and when he told them all
that had happened, they were very much afraid. 9 Then Abimelech
called Abraham in and said, "What have you done to us? How have I wronged you
that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done
things to me that should not be done." 10 And Abimelech asked
Abraham, "What was your reason for doing this?"
11
Abraham
replied, "I said to myself, `There is surely no fear of God in this place, and
they will kill me because of my wife.' 12 Besides, she really is my
sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my
wife. 13 And when God had me wander from my father's household, I
said to her, `This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of
me, "He is my brother."'"
14
Then
Abimelech brought sheep and cattle and male and female slaves and gave them to
Abraham, and he returned Sarah his wife to him. 15 And Abimelech
said, "My land is before you; live wherever you like."
16
To
Sarah he said, "I am giving your brother a thousand shekelsA of
silver. This is to cover the offense against you before all who are with you;
you are completely vindicated."
17
Then
Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife and his slave girls so
they could have children again, 18 for the LORD had closed up every
womb in Abimelech's household because of Abraham's wife Sarah. [12]
21
1
Now
the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what
he had promised. 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in
his old age, at the very time God had promised him. 3 Abraham gave
the name Isaac A to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son
Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. 5
Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
6
Sarah
said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh
with me." 7 And she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah
would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."
8
The
child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great
feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne
to Abraham was mocking, 10 and she said to Abraham, "Get rid of that
slave woman and her son, for that slave woman's son will never share in the
inheritance with my son Isaac."
11
The
matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. 12
But God said to him, "Do not be so distressed about the boy and your
maidservant. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac
that your offspring B will be reckoned. 13 I will make the
son of the maidservant into a nation also, because he is your offspring."
14
Early
the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to
Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went
on her way and wandered in the desert of Beersheba.
15
When
the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the
bushes.
16
Then
she went off and sat down nearby, about a bowshot away, for she thought, "I
cannot watch the boy die." And as she sat there nearby, she C began
to sob.
17
God
heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said
to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid;
God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and
take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation."
19
Then
God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin
with water and gave the boy a drink.
20
God
was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an
archer.
21 While he was living in the
Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.
22
At
that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, "God
is with you in everything you do. 23 Now swear to me here before God
that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to
me and the country where you are living as an alien the same kindness I have
shown to you."
24
Abraham
said, "I swear it."
25
Then
Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech's servants
had seized. 26 But Abimelech said, "I don't know who has done this.
You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today." [13]
27
So
Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men
made a treaty. 28 Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock,
29 and Abimelech asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven
ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?"
30
He
replied, "Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this
well."
31
So
that place was called Beersheba, D because the two men swore an oath
there.
32
After
the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his
forces returned to the land of the Philistines. 33 Abraham planted a
tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the
Eternal God. 34 And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for
a long time.
22
1
Some
time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!"
"Here
I am," he replied.
2
Then
God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom
you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt
offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."
3
Early
the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of
his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt
offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the
third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He
said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over
there. We will worship and then we will come back to you."
6
Abraham
took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he
himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,
7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?"
"Yes,
my son?" Abraham replied.
"The
fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt
offering?"
8
Abraham
answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son."
And the two of them went on together.
9
When
they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and
arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and [14]
laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10Then he reached out his
hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11But the angel of the LORD
called out to him from heaven, "Abraham!
Abraham!"
"Here
I am," he replied.
12
"Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God,
because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."
13
Abraham
looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram A caught by its horns.
He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of
his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And
to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided."
15
The
angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and
said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that
because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,
17 I will
surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky
and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the
cities of their enemies, 18
and through your offspring
B all nations on earth will be
blessed, because you have obeyed me."
19
Then
Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And
Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
20
Some
time later Abraham was told, "Milcah is also a mother; she has borne sons to
your brother Nahor: 21 Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the
father of Aram),
22
Kesed,
Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel." 23 Bethuel became the father of
Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Abraham's brother Nahor. 24
His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash
and Maacah. [15]
NEW
TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 7:15 -
29
15
"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's
clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you
will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from
thistles? 17 Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree
bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot
bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and
thrown into the fire. 20
Thus, by their fruit you will recognize
them.
21
"Not everyone who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' will enter the
kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in
heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, `Lord, Lord, did we not
prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many
miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them plainly, `I never knew you. Away from
me, you evildoers!'
24
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts
them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
25 The
rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that
house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.
26 But
everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is
like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down,
the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell
with a great crash."
28
When
Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,
29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their
teachers of the law. [16]

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
