A
shiggaion A of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning
Cush, a Benjamite.
1
O
LORD my God, I take refuge in you;
save
and deliver me from all who pursue me,
2
or
they will tear me like a lion
and
rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me.
3
O
LORD my God, if I have done this
and
there is guilt on my hands--
4
if
I have done evil to him who is at peace with me
or
without cause have robbed my foe--
5
then
let my enemy pursue and overtake me;
let
him trample my life to the ground
and
make me sleep in the dust.
Selah
6
Arise,
O LORD, in your anger;
rise
up against the rage of my enemies.
Awake,
my God; decree justice.
7
Let
the assembled peoples gather around you.
Rule
over them from on high;
8
let
the LORD judge the peoples.
Judge
me, O LORD, according to my righteousness,
according
to my integrity, O Most High.
9
O
righteous God,
who
searches minds and hearts,
bring
to an end the violence of the wicked
and
make the righteous secure. [1]
10
My
shield B is God Most High,
who
saves the upright in heart.
11
God
is a righteous judge,
a
God who expresses his wrath every day.
12
If
he does not relent,
he
C will sharpen his sword;
he
will bend and string his bow.
13
He
has prepared his deadly weapons;
he
makes ready his flaming arrows.
14
He
who is pregnant with evil
and
conceives trouble gives birth to disillusionment.
15
He
who digs a hole and scoops it out
falls
into the pit he has made.
16
The
trouble he causes recoils on himself;
his
violence comes down on his own head.
17
I
will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness
and
will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High. [2]
PSALMS: 37
Of
David.
1
Do
A not fret because of evil men
or
be envious of those who do wrong;
2
for
like the grass they will soon wither,
like
green plants they will soon die away.
3
Trust
in the LORD and do good;
dwell
in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
4
Delight
yourself in the LORD
and
he will give you the desires of your heart.
5
Commit
your way to the LORD;
trust
in him and he will do this:
6
He
will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,
the
justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
7
Be
still before the LORD and wait patiently for him;
do
not fret when men succeed in their ways,
when
they carry out their wicked schemes.
8
Refrain
from anger and turn from wrath;
do
not fret--it leads only to evil.
9
For
evil men will be cut off,
but
those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land.
10
A
little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though
you look for them, they will not be found.
11
But
the meek will inherit the land
and
enjoy great peace. [3]
12
The
wicked plot against the righteous
and
gnash their teeth at them;
13
but
the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for
he knows their day is coming.
14
The
wicked draw the sword
and
bend the bow
to
bring down the poor and needy,
to
slay those whose ways are upright.
15
But
their swords will pierce their own hearts,
and
their bows will be broken.
16
Better
the little that the righteous have
than
the wealth of many wicked;
17
for
the power of the wicked will be broken,
but
the LORD upholds the righteous.
18
The
days of the blameless are known to the LORD,
and
their inheritance will endure forever.
19
In
times of disaster they will not wither;
in
days of famine they will enjoy plenty.
20
But
the wicked will perish:
The
LORD's enemies will be like the beauty of the fields,
they
will vanish--vanish like smoke.
21
The
wicked borrow and do not repay,
but
the righteous give generously;
22
those
the LORD blesses will inherit the land,
but
those he curses will be cut off. [4]
23
If
the LORD delights in a man's way,
he
makes his steps firm;
24
though
he stumble, he will not fall,
for
the LORD upholds him with his hand.
25
I
was young and now I am old,
yet
I have never seen the righteous forsaken
or
their children begging bread.
26
They
are always generous and lend freely;
their
children will be blessed.
27
Turn
from evil and do good;
then
you will dwell in the land forever.
28
For
the LORD loves the just
and
will not forsake his faithful ones.
They
will be protected forever,
but
the offspring of the wicked will be cut off;
29
the
righteous will inherit the land
and
dwell in it forever.
30
The
mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,
and
his tongue speaks what is just.
31
The
law of his God is in his heart;
his
feet do not slip.
32
The
wicked lie in wait for the righteous,
seeking
their very lives;
33
but
the LORD will not leave them in their power
or
let them be condemned when brought to trial. [5]
34
Wait
for the LORD
and
keep his way.
He
will exalt you to inherit the land;
when
the wicked are cut off, you will see it.
35
I
have seen a wicked and ruthless man
flourishing
like a green tree in its native soil,
36
but
he soon passed away and was no more;
though
I looked for him, he could not be found.
37
Consider
the blameless, observe the upright;
there
is a future B for the man of peace.
38
But
all sinners will be destroyed;
the
future C of the wicked will be cut off.
39
The
salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD;
he
is their stronghold in time of trouble.
40
The
LORD helps them and delivers them;
he
delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because
they take refuge in him. [6]
PSALMS: 67
For
the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm. A
song.
1
May
God be gracious to us and bless us
and
make his face shine upon us,
Selah
2
that
your ways may be known on earth,
your
salvation among all nations.
3
May
the peoples praise you, O God;
may
all the peoples praise you.
4
May
the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for
you rule the peoples justly
and
guide the nations of the earth.
Selah
5
May
the peoples praise you, O God;
may
all the peoples praise you.
6
Then
the land will yield its harvest,
and
God, our God, will bless us.
7
God
will bless us,
and
all the ends of the earth will fear him. [7]
PSALMS: 97
1
The
LORD reigns, let the earth be glad;
let
the distant shores rejoice.
2
Clouds
and thick darkness surround him;
righteousness
and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3
Fire
goes before him
and
consumes his foes on every side.
4
His
lightning lights up the world;
the
earth sees and trembles.
5
The
mountains melt like wax before the LORD,
before
the Lord of all the earth.
6
The
heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and
all the peoples see his glory.
7
All
who worship images are put to shame,
those
who boast in idols--
worship
him, all you gods!
8
Zion
hears and rejoices
and
the villages of Judah are glad
because
of your judgments, O LORD.
9
For
you, O LORD, are the Most High over all the earth;
you
are exalted far above all gods.
10
Let
those who love the LORD hate evil,
for
he guards the lives of his faithful ones
and
delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11
Light
is shed upon the righteous
and
joy on the upright in heart.
12
Rejoice
in the LORD, you who are righteous,
and
praise his holy name. [8]
PSALMS: 127
A
song of ascents. Of Solomon.
1
Unless
the LORD builds the house,
its
builders labor in vain.
Unless
the LORD watches over the city,
the
watchmen stand guard in vain.
2
In
vain you rise early
and
stay up late,
toiling
for food to eat--
for
he grants sleep to A those he loves.
3
Sons
are a heritage from the LORD,
children
a reward from him.
4
Like
arrows in the hands of a warrior
are
sons born in one's youth.
5
Blessed
is the man
whose
quiver is full of them.
They
will not be put to shame
when
they contend with their enemies in the gate. [9]
PROVERBS: 7
7
1
My son, keep my words
and
store up my commands within you.
2
Keep
my commands and you will live;
guard
my teachings as the apple of your eye.
3
Bind
them on your fingers;
write
them on the tablet of your heart.
4
Say
to wisdom, "You are my
sister,"
and
call understanding your kinsman;
5
they
will keep you from the adulteress,
from
the wayward wife with her seductive words.
6
At
the window of my house
I
looked out through the lattice.
7
I
saw among the simple,
I
noticed among the young men,
a
youth who lacked judgment.
8
He
was going down the street near her corner,
walking
along in the direction of her house
9
at
twilight, as the day was fading,
as
the dark of night set in.
10
Then
out came a woman to meet him,
dressed
like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
11
(She
is loud and defiant,
her
feet never stay at home;
12
now
in the street, now in the squares,
at
every corner she lurks.)
13
She
took hold of him and kissed him
and
with a brazen face she said:
14
"I
have fellowship offerings A at home;
today
I fulfilled my vows.
15
So
I came out to meet you; [10]
I
looked for you and have found you!
16
I
have covered my bed
with
colored linens from Egypt.
17
I
have perfumed my bed
with
myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.
18
Come,
let's drink deep of love till morning;
let's
enjoy ourselves with love!
19
My
husband is not at home;
he
has gone on a long journey.
20
He
took his purse filled with money
and
will not be home till full moon."
21
With
persuasive words she led him astray;
she
seduced him with her smooth talk.
22
All
at once he followed her
like
an ox going to the slaughter,
like
a deer B stepping into a noose C
23
till an arrow pierces his liver,
like
a bird darting into a snare,
little
knowing it will cost him his life.
24
Now
then, my sons, listen to me;
pay
attention to what I say.
25
Do
not let your heart turn to her ways
or
stray into her paths.
26
Many
are the victims she has brought down;
her
slain are a mighty throng.
27
Her
house is a highway to the grave, D
leading
down to the chambers of death. [11]
OLD
TESTAMENT: ZECHARIAH 10:1 - 11:17
10
1
Ask the LORD for rain in the springtime;
it
is the LORD who makes the storm clouds.
He
gives showers of rain to men,
and
plants of the field to everyone.
2
The
idols speak deceit,
diviners
see visions that lie;
they
tell dreams that are false,
they
give comfort in vain.
Therefore
the people wander like sheep
oppressed
for lack of a shepherd.
3
"My anger burns against the shepherds,
and
I will punish the leaders;
for
the LORD Almighty will care
for
his flock, the house of Judah,
and
make them like a proud horse in battle.
4 From
Judah will come the cornerstone,
from
him the tent peg,
from
him the battle bow,
from
him every ruler.
5 Together
they A
will be like mighty men
trampling
the muddy streets in battle.
Because
the LORD is with them,
they
will fight and overthrow the horsemen.
6
"I will strengthen the house of Judah
and
save the house of Joseph.
[12]
I
will restore them
because
I have compassion on them.
They
will be as though
I
had not rejected them,
for
I am the LORD their God
and
I will answer them.
7 The
Ephraimites will become like mighty men,
and
their hearts will be glad as with wine.
Their
children will see it and be joyful;
their
hearts will rejoice in the LORD.
8 I
will signal for them
and
gather them in.
Surely
I will redeem them;
they
will be as numerous as before.
9 Though
I scatter them among the peoples,
yet
in distant lands they will remember me.
They
and their children will survive,
and
they will return.
10 I
will bring them back from Egypt
and
gather them from Assyria.
I
will bring them to Gilead and Lebanon,
and
there will not be room enough for them.
11 They
will pass through the sea of trouble;
the
surging sea will be subdued
and
all the depths of the Nile will dry up.
I
will restore them
because
I have compassion on them.
They
will be as though
I
had not rejected them,
for
I am the LORD their God
and
I will answer them.
7 The
Ephraimites will become like mighty men,
and
their hearts will be glad as with wine.
Their
children will see it and be joyful;
their
hearts will rejoice in the LORD.
8 I
will signal for them
and
gather them in.
Surely
I will redeem them;
they
will be as numerous as before.
9
Though
I scatter them among the peoples,
yet
in distant lands they will remember me.
They
and their children will survive,
and
they will return.
10I
will bring them back from Egypt
and
gather them from Assyria.
I
will bring them to Gilead and Lebanon,
and
there will not be room enough for them.
11
They
will pass through the sea of trouble;
the
surging sea will be subdued
and
all the depths of the Nile will dry up.
Assyria's
pride will be brought down [14]
and
Egypt's scepter will pass away.
12
I
will strengthen them in the LORD
and
in his name they will walk,"
declares
the LORD.
11
1
Open your doors, O Lebanon,
so
that fire may devour your cedars!
2
Wail,
O pine tree, for the cedar has fallen;
the
stately trees are ruined!
Wail,
oaks of Bashan;
the
dense forest has been cut down!
3
Listen
to the wail of the shepherds;
their
rich pastures are destroyed!
Listen
to the roar of the lions;
the
lush thicket of the Jordan is ruined!
4
This
is what the LORD my God says: "Pasture the flock
marked for slaughter. 5 Their buyers slaughter them and go unpunished. Those who
sell them say, `Praise the LORD, I am rich!' Their own shepherds do not spare
them. 6 or I will no longer have
pity on the people of the land," declares the LORD. "I will hand everyone over to his neighbor and his king. They
will oppress the land, and I will not rescue them from their hands."
7
So
I pastured the flock marked for slaughter, particularly the oppressed of the
flock. Then I took two staffs and called one Favor and the other Union, and I
pastured the flock. 8 In one month I got rid of the three shepherds.
The
flock detested me, and I grew weary of them 9 and said, "I will not
be your shepherd. Let the dying die, and the perishing perish. Let those who are
left eat one another's flesh." [15]
10
Then
I took my staff called Favor and broke it, revoking the covenant I had made with
all the nations. 11 It was revoked on that day, and so the afflicted
of the flock who were watching me knew it was the word of the LORD.
12
I
told them, "If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it." So they
paid me thirty pieces of silver.
13
And
the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the
potter"--the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty
pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter.
14
Then
I broke my second staff called Union, breaking the brotherhood between Judah and
Israel.
15
Then
the LORD said to me, "Take again the equipment of a
foolish shepherd. 16 For I am going to raise up a shepherd over the land who will
not care for the lost, or seek the young, or heal the injured, or feed the
healthy, but will eat the meat of the choice sheep, tearing off their hoofs.
17
"Woe to the worthless shepherd,
who
deserts the flock!
May
the sword strike his arm and his right eye!
May
his arm be completely withered,
his
right eye totally blinded!"

NEW
TESTAMENT: REVELATONS 18:1 -
24
18
1
After
this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and
the earth was illuminated by his splendor. 2 With a mighty voice he
shouted:
"Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!
She
has become a home for demons
and
a haunt for every evil A
spirit,
a
haunt for every unclean and detestable bird.
3 For
all the nations have drunk
the
maddening wine of her adulteries.
The
kings of the earth committed adultery with her,
and
the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries."
4
Then
I heard another voice from heaven say:
"Come out of her, my people,
so
that you will not share in her sins,
so
that you will not receive any of her plagues;
5 for
her sins are piled up to heaven,
and
God has remembered her crimes.
6 Give
back to her as she has given;
pay
her back double for what she has done.
Mix
her a double portion from her own cup.
7 Give
her as much torture and grief
as
the glory and luxury she gave herself.
In
her heart she boasts,
`I
sit as queen; I am not a widow,
and
I will never mourn.'
[17]
8 Therefore
in one day her plagues will overtake her:
death,
mourning and famine.
She
will be consumed by fire,
for
mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
9
"When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her
and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn
over her. 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry:
"`Woe! Woe, O great city,
O
Babylon, city of power!
In
one hour your doom has come!'
11
"The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her
because no one buys their cargoes any more—12 cargoes of gold,
silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth;
every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly
wood, bronze, iron and marble; 13
cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of
incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat;
cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and
bodies and souls of men.
14
"They will say, `The fruit you longed for is gone from you.
All your riches and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.'
15 The
merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far
off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn 16 and cry out:
"`Woe! Woe, O great city,
dressed
in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and
glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!
"Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors,
and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off.
18 When
they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, `Was there ever a city
like this great city?' 19
They will throw dust on their heads, and
with weeping and mourning cry out:
"`Woe!
Woe, O great city,
where
all who had ships on the sea
became
rich through her wealth!
In
one hour she has been brought to ruin!
20 Rejoice
over her, O heaven!
Rejoice,
saints and apostles and prophets!
God
has judged her for the way she treated you.'"
21
Then
a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it
into the sea, and said:
"With such violence
the
great city of Babylon will be thrown down,
never
to be found again.
22 The
music of harpists and musicians, flute players and trumpeters,
will
never be heard in you again.
No
workman of any trade
will
ever be found in you again.
The
sound of a millstone
will
never be heard in you again.
23 The
light of a lamp
will
never shine in you again.
[19]
The
voice of bridegroom and bride
will
never be heard in you again.
Your
merchants were the world's great men.
By
your magic spell all the nations were led astray.
24 In
her was found the blood of prophets and of the saints,

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
