LORD looks down from heaven

see if there are any who understand,

who seek God.

All
have turned aside,
they
have together become corrupt;
there
is no one who does good,
not
even one.
4
Will
evildoers never learn--
those
who devour my people as men eat bread
and
who do not call on the LORD?
5
There
they are, overwhelmed with dread,
for
God is present in the company of the righteous.
6
You
evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
but
the LORD is their refuge.
7
Oh,
that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When
the LORD restores the fortunes of his people,
let
Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad! [1]

We
have heard with our ears, O God;
our
fathers have told us
what
you did in their days,
in
days long ago.

With
your hand you drove out the nations
and
planted our fathers;
you
crushed the peoples

made our fathers flourish.

It
was not by their sword that they won the land,
nor
did their arm bring them victory;
it
was your right hand, your arm,
and
the light of your face, for you loved them.
4
You
are my King and my God,
who
decrees B victories for Jacob.

Through
you we push back our enemies;
through
your name we trample our foes.

I
do not trust in my bow,
my
sword does not bring me victory;

but
you give us victory over our enemies,

put our adversaries to shame.

In
God we make our boast all day long,

made us retreat before the enemy,

the taunts of those who reproach and revile me,

of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.

All
this happened to us,
though
we had not forgotten you
or
been false to your covenant.

hearts had not turned back;
our
feet had not strayed from your path.

But
you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals
and
covered us over with deep darkness.

If
we had forgotten the name of our God
or
spread out our hands to a foreign god,

would
not God have discovered it,
since
he knows the secrets of the heart?
22
Yet
for your sake we face death all day long;
we
are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
23
Awake,
O Lord! Why do you sleep?
Rouse
yourself! Do not reject us forever. [3]

Why
do you hide your face
and
forget our misery and oppression?
25
We
are brought down to the dust;
our
bodies cling to the ground.

Rise
up and help us;
redeem

A

1
Why
have you rejected us forever, O God?
Why
does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?
2
Remember
the people you purchased of old,
the
tribe of your inheritance, whom you redeemed--
Mount
Zion, where you dwelt.
3
Turn
your steps toward these everlasting ruins,
all
this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.
4
Your
foes roared in the place where you met with us;
they
set up their standards as signs.
5
They
behaved like men wielding axes
to
cut through a thicket of trees.
6
They
smashed all the carved paneling
with
their axes and hatchets.
7
They
burned your sanctuary to the ground;
they
defiled the dwelling place of your Name.
8
They
said in their hearts, "We will crush them completely!"
They
burned every place where God was worshiped in the land.
9
We
are given no miraculous signs;
no
prophets are left,
and
none of us knows how long this will be.
10
How
long will the enemy mock you, O God?
Will
the foe revile your name forever?
11
Why
do you hold back your hand, your right hand?
Take
it from the folds of your garment and destroy them!
12
But
you, O God, are my king from of old;
you
bring salvation upon the earth. [5]

It
was you who split open the sea by your power;
you
broke the heads of the monster in the waters.
14
It
was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan
and
gave him as food to the creatures of the desert.
15
It
was you who opened up springs and streams;
you
dried up the ever flowing rivers.

The
day is yours, and yours also the night;
you
established the sun and moon.

It
was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;

made both summer and winter.

Remember
how the enemy has mocked you, O LORD,

foolish people have reviled your name.

Do
not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts;

not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever.

Have
regard for your covenant,
because
haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land.

Do
not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace;
may
the poor and needy praise your name.

Rise
up, O God, and defend your cause;
remember
how fools mock you all day long.

not ignore the clamor of your adversaries,
the
uproar of your enemies, which rises continually. [6]

Praise
the LORD, O my soul.
O
LORD my God, you are very great;
you
are clothed with splendor and majesty.

He
wraps himself in light as with a garment;
he
stretches out the heavens like a tent

and
lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters.
He
makes the clouds his chariot
and
rides on the wings of the wind.

He
makes winds his messengers, A
flames
of fire his servants.
5
He
set the earth on its foundations;
it
can never be moved.

You
covered it with the deep as with a garment;
the
waters stood above the mountains.

But
at your rebuke the waters fled,
at
the sound of your thunder they took to flight;

went down into the valleys,

the place you assigned for them.

set a boundary they cannot cross;
never
again will they cover the earth.

makes springs pour water into the ravines;

He

plants for man to cultivate--
bringing

many are your works, O LORD!
In
wisdom you made them all;

and
the leviathan, which you formed to frolic there. [8]

all look to you
to
give them their food at the proper time.

The wise woman builds her house,
but

fool's talk brings a rod to his back,

Where
there are no oxen, the manger is empty,

from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest.

but
a false witness pours out lies.

mocker seeks wisdom and finds none,

knowledge comes easily to the discerning.

is the written account of Adam's line.
When
God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created
them male and female and blessed them. And when they were created, he called
them "man. A"

When
Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image;
and he named him Seth. 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years
and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived 930 years,
and then he died.
6
When
Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father B of Enosh. 7
And after he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had
other sons and daughters.
8
Altogether,
Seth lived 912 years, and then he died.
9
When
Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan. 10 And after
he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and
daughters.

Altogether,
Enosh lived 905 years, and then he died.

Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel. 13 And
after he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other

Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared. 16 And
after he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other

Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. 19 And
after he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons
and daughters.

Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 And
after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and
had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years.
24 Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him
away.

When
Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. 26
And after he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and
had other sons and daughters. 27 Altogether, Methuselah lived 969
years, and then he died.

When
Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah
C and said, "He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our
hands caused by the ground the LORD has cursed." 30 After Noah was
born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31
Altogether, Lamech lived 777 years, and then he died.

After
Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth. [15]

When
men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them,
2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and
they married any of them they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with A man forever, for he is mortal B; his days will be a hundred and twenty years."

The
Nephilim were on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of
God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes
of old, men of renown.

The
LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every
inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. 6
The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was
filled with pain. 7 So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the
earth--men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of
the air--for I am grieved that I have made them." 8 But Noah
found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

This
is the account of Noah.
Noah
was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with
God. 10 Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.
11
Now
the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence. 12 God
saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted
their ways.
13
So
God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all
people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going
to destroy both them and the earth.
14
So
make yourself an ark of cypress
C wood; make rooms in it and coat it
with pitch inside and out. 15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450
feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. D 16
Make a roof for it and finish
E the ark to within 18 inches
F of the top. Put a door in the side of
the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. 17 I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy
all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it.
Everything on earth will perish. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will
enter the ark--you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with
you. 19 You are to bring into the
ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with
you. 20 Two of every kind of
bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the
ground will come to you to be kept alive. 21 You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten
and store it away as food for you and for them."

Noah

when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was
baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from
the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9
And do not think you can say to yourselves, `We have Abraham as our
father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for
Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every
tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

"I
baptize you with B water for repentance. But after me will come one
who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12 His winnowing fork
is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into
the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

Then
Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But
John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be
baptized by you, and do you come to me?" It is written: `Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that
comes from the mouth of God.'
15
Jesus
replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do
this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented.
16
As
soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven
was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on
him.

And
a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I
love; with him I am well pleased."

Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2
