you test me, you will find nothing;
I
have resolved that my mouth will not sin.

for the deeds of men--
by
the word of your lips

thanks to the LORD, for he is good;

the redeemed of the LORD say this--

wandered in desert wastelands,
finding
no way to a city where they could settle.

They
were hungry and thirsty,
and
their lives ebbed away.

Then
they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,

he delivered them from their distress.

He
led them by a straight way
to
a city where they could settle.

Let
them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love

sat in darkness and the deepest gloom,
prisoners
suffering in iron chains,

stumbled, and there was no one to help.

they cried to the LORD in their trouble,

he saved them from their distress.

brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom

broke away their chains.

them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love

his wonderful deeds for men,

for
he breaks down gates of bronze
and
cuts through bars of iron. [6]

Some
became fools through their rebellious ways
and
suffered affliction because of their iniquities.

They
loathed all food
and
drew near the gates of death.

they cried to the LORD in their trouble,

he saved them from their distress.

He
sent forth his word and healed them;
he
rescued them from the grave.

Let
them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love

them sacrifice thank offerings
and
tell of his works with songs of joy.

Others
went out on the sea in ships;
they
were merchants on the mighty waters.

oppression, calamity and sorrow;

who pours contempt on nobles

them wander in a trackless waste.

he lifted the needy out of their affliction
and
increased their families like flocks.

The
upright see and rejoice,
but
all the wicked shut their mouths.

Whoever
is wise, let him heed these things
and
consider the great love of the LORD. [8]

137

By
the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept
when
we remembered Zion.
2
There
on the poplars
we
hung our harps,
3
for
there our captors asked us for songs,
our
tormentors demanded songs of joy;
they
said, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"
4
How
can we sing the songs of the LORD
while
in a foreign land?
5
If
I forget you, O Jerusalem,
may
my right hand forget its skill.
6
May
my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth
if
I do not remember you,
if
I do not consider Jerusalem
my
highest joy.
7
Remember,
O LORD, what the Edomites did
on
the day Jerusalem fell.
"Tear
it down," they cried,
"tear
it down to its foundations!"

O
Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction,
happy
is he who repays you
for
what you have done to us--

he
who seizes your infants
and

Better a dry crust with peace and quiet
than
a house full of feasting, A with strife.
2
A
wise servant will rule over a disgraceful son,
and
will share the inheritance as one of the brothers.
3
The
crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,
but
the LORD tests the heart.
4
A
wicked man listens to evil lips;
a
liar pays attention to a malicious tongue.
5
He
who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker;
whoever
gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.
6
Children's
children are a crown to the aged,
and
parents are the pride of their children.
7
Arrogant
B lips are unsuited to a fool--
how
much worse lying lips to a ruler!
8
A
bribe is a charm to the one who gives it;
wherever
he turns, he succeeds.
9
He
who covers over an offense promotes love,
but
whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
10
A
rebuke impresses a man of discernment
more
than a hundred lashes a fool.
11
An
evil man is bent only on rebellion;
a
merciless official will be sent against him. [10]

Better
to meet a bear robbed of her cubs
than
a fool in his folly.
13
If
a man pays back evil for good,
evil
will never leave his house.
14
Starting
a quarrel is like breaching a dam;
so
drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

Acquitting
the guilty and condemning the innocent--
the
LORD detests them both.
16
Of
what use is money in the hand of a fool,
since
he has no desire to get wisdom?
17
A
friend loves at all times,
and
a brother is born for adversity.
18
A
man lacking in judgment strikes hands in pledge
and
puts up security for his neighbor.
19
He
who loves a quarrel loves sin;
he
who builds a high gate invites destruction.
20
A
man of perverse heart does not prosper;
he
whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble.
21
To
have a fool for a son brings grief;
there
is no joy for the father of a fool. [11]
22
A
cheerful heart is good medicine,
but
a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
23
A
wicked man accepts a bribe in secret
to
pervert the course of justice.
24
A
discerning man keeps wisdom in view,
but
a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the earth.
25
A
foolish son brings grief to his father
and
bitterness to the one who bore him.
26
It
is not good to punish an innocent man,
or
to flog officials for their integrity.
27
A
man of knowledge uses words with restraint,
and
a man of understanding is even-tempered.
28
Even
a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent,
and
discerning if he holds his tongue. [12]

TESTAMENT: GENESIS 13:3 - 15:21

Now
Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and
tents.
6
But
the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their
possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. 7
And quarreling arose between Abram's herdsmen and the herdsmen of Lot. The
Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.
8
So
Abram said to Lot, "Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between
your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers. 9 Is not the whole land
before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if
you go to the right, I'll go to the left."
10
Lot
looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the
garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. (This was before the
LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the
whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted
company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among
the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the
men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.
14
The
LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and
south, east and west. 15
All the land that you see I will give to
you and your offspring A
forever. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so
that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.
17 Go,
walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to
you."
18
So
Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron,
where he built an altar to the LORD.

At
this time Amraphel king of Shinar, A Arioch king of Ellasar,
Kedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goiim 2 went to war
against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah,
Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). 3All
these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (the Salt Sea
B). 4For twelve years they had been subject to
Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
5
In
the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out and
defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in
Shaveh Kiriathaim 6 and the Horites in the hill country of Seir, as
far as El Paran near the desert. 7 Then they turned back and went to
En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the
Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who were living in Hazazon Tamar.
8
Then
the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim
and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines
in the Valley of Siddim 9 against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal
king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar--four kings
against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and
when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some of the men fell into them and
the rest fled to the hills. 11 The four kings seized all the goods of
Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they [13]
went away. 12 They also carried off Abram's nephew Lot and his
possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

One
who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew. Now Abram was living
near the great trees of Mamre the Amorite, a brother C of Eshcol and
Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram. 14 When Abram heard that
his relative had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in
his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 During the night
Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as
Hobah, north of Damascus. 16 He recovered all the goods and brought
back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other
people.
17
After
Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the
king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's
Valley).
18
Then
Melchizedek king of Salem D brought out bread and wine. He was priest
of God Most High, 19 and he blessed Abram, saying,
"Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
Creator
E of heaven and earth. 20
And blessed be F God Most High,
who
delivered your enemies into your hand."
Then
Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
21
The
king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me the people and keep the goods for
yourself."
22
But
Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most
High, Creator of heaven and earth, and have taken an oath 23 that I
will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the thong of a
sandal, so that you will never be able to say, `I made Abram rich.' 24
I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that
belongs to the men who went with me--to Aner, Eshcol and Mamre. Let them have
their share."

After
this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision:
"Do not be afraid, Abram.
I
am your shield,
A [14] your very great reward. B"
2
But
Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and
the one who will inherit C my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" 3
And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my
household will be my heir."
4
Then
the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not
be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir."
5
He
took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and
count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall
your offspring be."
6
Abram
believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
7
He
also said to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out
of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it."
8
But
Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I will gain possession of
it?"
9
So
the LORD said to him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and a
ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon."
10
Abram
brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each
other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. 11 Then birds of
prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
12
As
the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful
darkness came over him. 13 Then the LORD said to him, "Know for
certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and
they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. 14 But I
will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out
with great possessions.
15
You,
however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.
16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for
the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure."
17
When
the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch
appeared and passed between the pieces.
18
On
that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river

"You have heard that it was said, `Do not commit
adultery.' E 28 But I tell you that anyone who
looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it
away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole
body to be thrown into hell.
30
And
if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better
for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
31
"It has been said, `Anyone who divorces his wife must give
her a certificate of divorce.' F 32 But I tell you that
anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to
become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits
adultery.
33
"Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long
ago, `Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the
Lord.' 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for
it is God's throne or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by
Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by
your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.
37 Simply
let your `Yes' be `Yes,' and your `No,' `No'; anything beyond this comes from
the evil one.
38
"You have heard that it was said, `Eye for eye, and tooth for
tooth.' G 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone
strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if someone wants
to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
41 If
someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.
42 Give
to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow
from you.
43
"You have heard that it was said, `Love your neighbor
H and hate your
enemy.'
44 But
I tell you: Love your enemies I
and pray for those who persecute you,
45 that
you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil
and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
46 If you
love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax
collectors doing that? 47
And if you greet only your brothers, what
are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect,
therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. [16]
