A
psalm of David.
1
The
LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2
He
makes me lie down in green pastures,
he
leads me beside quiet waters,
3
he
restores my soul.
He
guides me in paths of righteousness
for
his name's sake.
4
Even
though I walk
through
the valley of the shadow of death, A
I
will fear no evil,
for
you are with me;
your
rod and your staff,
they
comfort me.
5
You
prepare a table before me
in
the presence of my enemies.
You
anoint my head with oil;
my
cup overflows.
6
Surely
goodness and love will follow me
all
the days of my life,
and
I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.

PSALMS: 53
For
the director of music. According to mahalath. A A maskil
B of David.
1
The
fool says in his heart,
"There
is no God."
They
are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
there
is no one who does good.
2
God
looks down from heaven
on
the sons of men
to
see if there are any who understand,
any
who seek God.
3
Everyone
has turned away,
they
have together become corrupt;
there
is no one who does good,
not
even one.
4
Will
the evildoers never learn--
those
who devour my people as men eat bread
and
who do not call on God?
5
There
they were, overwhelmed with dread,
where
there was nothing to dread.
God
scattered the bones of those who attacked you;
you
put them to shame, for God despised them.
6
Oh,
that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When
God restores the fortunes of his people,
let
Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad! [2]
PSALMS: 83
A
song. A psalm of Asaph.
1
O
God, do not keep silent;
be
not quiet, O God, be not still.
2
See
how your enemies are astir,
how
your foes rear their heads.
3
With
cunning they conspire against your people;
they
plot against those you cherish.
4
"Come,"
they say, "let us destroy them as a nation,
that
the name of Israel be remembered no more."
5
With
one mind they plot together;
they
form an alliance against you--
6
the
tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
of
Moab and the Hagrites,
7
Gebal,
A Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia,
with the people of Tyre.
8
Even
Assyria has joined them
to
lend strength to the descendants of Lot.
Selah
9
Do
to them as you did to Midian,
as
you did to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon,
10
who
perished at Endor
and
became like refuse on the ground.
11
Make
their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,
all
their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
12
who
said, "Let us take possession
of
the pasturelands of God." [3]
13
Make
them like tumbleweed, O my God,
like
chaff before the wind.
14
As
fire consumes the forest
or
a flame sets the mountains ablaze,
15
so
pursue them with your tempest
and
terrify them with your storm.
16
Cover
their faces with shame
so
that men will seek your name, O LORD.
17
May
they ever be ashamed and dismayed;
may
they perish in disgrace.
18
Let
them know that you, whose name is the LORD--
that
you alone are the Most High over all the earth. [4]
PSALMS: 113
1
Praise
the LORD. A
Praise,
O servants of the LORD,
praise
the name of the LORD.
2
Let
the name of the LORD be praised,
both
now and forevermore.
3
From
the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,
the
name of the LORD is to be praised.
4
The
LORD is exalted over all the nations,
his
glory above the heavens.
5
Who
is like the LORD our God,
the
One who sits enthroned on high,
6
who
stoops down to look
on
the heavens and the earth?
7
He
raises the poor from the dust
and
lifts the needy from the ash heap;
8
he
seats them with princes,
with
the princes of their people.
9
He
settles the barren woman in her home
as
a happy mother of children.
Praise
the LORD. [5]
PSALMS: 143
A
psalm of David.
1
O
LORD, hear my prayer,
listen
to my cry for mercy;
in
your faithfulness and righteousness
come
to my relief.
2
Do
not bring your servant into judgment,
for
no one living is righteous before you.
3
The
enemy pursues me,
he
crushes me to the ground;
he
makes me dwell in darkness
like
those long dead.
4
So
my spirit grows faint within me;
my
heart within me is dismayed.
5
I
remember the days of long ago;
I
meditate on all your works
and
consider what your hands have done.
6
I
spread out my hands to you;
my
soul thirsts for you like a parched land.
Selah
7
Answer
me quickly, O LORD;
my
spirit fails.
Do
not hide your face from me
or
I will be like those who go down to the pit.
8
Let
the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for
I have put my trust in you.
Show
me the way I should go,
for
to you I lift up my soul.
9
Rescue
me from my enemies, O LORD, [6]
for
I hide myself in you.
10
Teach
me to do your will,
for
you are my God;
may
your good Spirit
lead
me on level ground.
11
For
your name's sake, O LORD, preserve my life;
in
your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.
12
In
your unfailing love, silence my enemies;
destroy
all my foes,
for
I am your servant. [7]
PROVERBS: 23
23
1
When you sit to dine with a ruler,
note
well what A is before you,
2
and
put a knife to your throat
if
you are given to gluttony.
3
Do
not crave his delicacies,
for
that food is deceptive.
4
Do
not wear yourself out to get rich;
have
the wisdom to show restraint.
5
Cast
but a glance at riches, and they are gone,
for
they will surely sprout wings
and
fly off to the sky like an eagle.
6
Do
not eat the food of a stingy man,
do
not crave his delicacies;
7
for
he is the kind of man
who
is always thinking about the cost. B
"Eat
and drink," he says to you,
but
his heart is not with you.
8
You
will vomit up the little you have eaten
and
will have wasted your compliments.
9
Do
not speak to a fool,
for
he will scorn the wisdom of your words.
10
Do
not move an ancient boundary stone
or
encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
11
for
their Defender is strong;
he
will take up their case against you.
12
Apply
your heart to instruction
and
your ears to words of knowledge. [8]
13
Do
not withhold discipline from a child;
if
you punish him with the rod, he will not die.
14
Punish
him with the rod
and
save his soul from death. C
15
My
son, if your heart is wise,
then
my heart will be glad;
16
my
inmost being will rejoice
when
your lips speak what is right.
17
Do
not let your heart envy sinners,
but
always be zealous for the fear of the LORD.
18
There
is surely a future hope for you,
and
your hope will not be cut off.
19
Listen,
my son, and be wise,
and
keep your heart on the right path.
20
Do
not join those who drink too much wine
or
gorge themselves on meat,
21
for
drunkards and gluttons become poor,
and
drowsiness clothes them in rags.
22
Listen
to your father, who gave you life,
and
do not despise your mother when she is old.
23
Buy
the truth and do not sell it;
get
wisdom, discipline and understanding.
24
The
father of a righteous man has great joy;
he
who has a wise son delights in him.
25
May
your father and mother be glad;
may
she who gave you birth rejoice! [9]
26
My
son, give me your heart
and
let your eyes keep to my ways,
27
for
a prostitute is a deep pit
and
a wayward wife is a narrow well.
28
Like
a bandit she lies in wait,
and
multiplies the unfaithful among men.
29
Who
has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who
has strife? Who has complaints?
Who
has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
30
Those
who linger over wine,
who
go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31
Do
not gaze at wine when it is red,
when
it sparkles in the cup,
when
it goes down smoothly!
32
In
the end it bites like a snake
and
poisons like a viper.
33
Your
eyes will see strange sights
and
your mind imagine confusing things.
34
You
will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying
on top of the rigging. [10]
OLD
TESTAMENT: GENESIS 26:17 - 27:46
17
So
Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled
there. 18 Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of
his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and
he gave them the same names his father had given them.
19
Isaac's
servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20
But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen and said, "The
water is ours!" So he named the well Esek, B because they disputed
with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that
one also; so he named it Sitnah. C 22 He moved on from
there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,
D saying, "Now the LORD has given us room and we will flourish in the
land."
23
From
there he went up to Beersheba. 24 That night the LORD appeared to him
and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham. Do
not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number
of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham."
25
Isaac
built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD. There he pitched his
tent, and there his servants dug a well.
26
Meanwhile,
Abimelech had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and
Phicol the commander of his forces. 27 Isaac asked them, "Why have
you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?"
28
They
answered, "We saw clearly that the LORD was with you; so we said, `There ought
to be a sworn agreement between us'--between us and you. Let us make a treaty
with you 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we did not molest
you but always treated you well and sent you away in peace. And now you are
blessed by the LORD."
30
Isaac
then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank. 31Early the next
morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way,
and they left him in peace.
32
That
day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said,
"We've found water!" 33 He called it Shibah, E and to this
day the name of the town has been Beersheba. F
34
When
Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and
also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35 They were a source of
grief to Isaac and Rebekah.
27
1
When
Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called
for Esau his older son and said to him, "My son."
"Here
I am," he answered. [11]
2
Isaac
said, "I am now an old man and don't know the day of my death. 3 Now
then, get your weapons--your quiver and bow--and go out to the open country to
hunt some wild game for me. 4 Prepare me the kind of tasty food I
like and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing before I
die."
5
Now
Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the
open country to hunt game and bring it back, 6 Rebekah said to her
son Jacob, "Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, 7
`Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may
give you my blessing in the presence of the LORD before I die.' 8
Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you: 9 Go out
to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty
food for your father, just the way he likes it. 10 Then take it to
your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing before he dies."
11
Jacob
said to Rebekah his mother, "But my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I'm a man
with smooth skin. 12 What if my father touches me? I would appear to
be tricking him and would bring down a curse on myself rather than a blessing."
13
His
mother said to him, "My son, let the curse fall on me. Just do what I say; go
and get them for me."
14
So
he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty
food, just the way his father liked it. 15 Then Rebekah took the best
clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her
younger son Jacob.
16
She
also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.
17
Then
she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.
18
He
went to his father and said, "My father."
"Yes,
my son," he answered. "Who is it?"
19
Jacob
said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me.
Please sit up and eat some of my game so that you may give me your blessing."
20
Isaac
asked his son, "How did you find it so quickly, my son?"
"The
LORD your God gave me success," he replied.
21
Then
Isaac said to Jacob, "Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you
really are my son Esau or not."
22
Jacob
went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, "The voice is the
voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau." 23 He did not
recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he
blessed him. 24 "Are you really my son Esau?" he asked.
"I
am," he replied.
25
Then
he said, "My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my
blessing." [12]
Jacob
brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26
Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come here, my son, and kiss me."
27
So
he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he
blessed him and said,
"Ah,
the smell of my son
is
like the smell of a field
that
the LORD has blessed. 28 May God give you of heaven's dew
and
of earth's richness--
an
abundance of grain and new wine. 29 May nations serve you
and
peoples bow down to you.
Be
lord over your brothers,
and
may the sons of your mother bow down to you.
May
those who curse you be cursed
and
those who bless you be blessed."
30
After
Isaac finished blessing him and Jacob had scarcely left his father's presence,
his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31 He too prepared some tasty
food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, "My father, sit up and
eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing."
32
His
father Isaac asked him, "Who are you?"
"I
am your son," he answered, "your firstborn, Esau."
33
Isaac
trembled violently and said, "Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it
to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed him--and indeed he will be
blessed!"
34
When
Esau heard his father's words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said
to his father, "Bless me--me too, my father!"
35
But
he said, "Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing."
36
Esau
said, "Isn't he rightly named JacobA? He has deceived me these two
times: He took my birthright, and now he's taken my blessing!" Then he asked,
"Haven't you reserved any blessing for me?" [13]
37
Isaac
answered Esau, "I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives
his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine. So what can I
possibly do for you, my son?"
38
Esau
said to his father, "Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my
father!" Then Esau wept aloud.
39
His
father Isaac answered him,
"Your
dwelling will be
away
from the earth's richness,
away
from the dew of heaven above. 40 You will live by the sword
and
you will serve your brother.
But
when you grow restless,
you
will throw his yoke
from
off your neck."
41
Esau
held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He
said to himself, "The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill
my brother Jacob."
42
When
Rebekah was told what her older son Esau had said, she sent for her younger son
Jacob and said to him, "Your brother Esau is consoling himself with the thought
of killing you. 43 Now then, my son, do what I say: Flee at once to
my brother Laban in Haran. 44 Stay with him for a while until your
brother's fury subsides. 45 When your brother is no longer angry with
you and forgets what you did to him, I'll send word for you to come back from
there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?"
46
Then
Rebekah said to Isaac, "I'm disgusted with living because of these Hittite
women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land, from Hittite
women like these, my life will not be worth living." [14]
NEW
TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 9:1 -
17
9
1
Jesus
stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2 Some
men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he
said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are
forgiven."
3 At
this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, "This fellow is
blaspheming!"
4
Knowing
their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why do you entertain evil
thoughts in your hearts? 5
Which is easier: to say, `Your sins are
forgiven,' or to say, `Get up and walk'? 6But so that you may know
that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...." Then he
said to the paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go
home." 7 And the man got up and went home. 8 When
the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had
given such authority to men.
9
As
Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax
collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him,
and Matthew got up and followed him.
10
While
Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners"
came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw
this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors
and `sinners'?"
12
On
hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who
need a doctor, but the sick.
13 But
go and learn what this means: `I desire mercy, not sacrifice.'
A For I have not come to call the
righteous, but sinners."
14
Then
John's disciples came and asked him, "How is it that we and the Pharisees fast,
but your disciples do not fast?"
15
Jesus
answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn
while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from
them; then they will fast.
16
"No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for
the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.
17 Neither
do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the
wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into
new wineskins, and both are preserved." [15]

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
