A
psalm of David.
1
Ascribe
to the LORD, O mighty ones,
ascribe
to the LORD glory and strength.
2
Ascribe
to the LORD the glory due his name;
worship
the LORD in the splendor of his A holiness.
3
The
voice of the LORD is over the waters;
the
God of glory thunders,
the
LORD thunders over the mighty waters.
4
The
voice of the LORD is powerful;
the
voice of the LORD is majestic.
5
The
voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
the
LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6
He
makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
Sirion
B like a young wild ox.
7
The
voice of the LORD strikes
with
flashes of lightning.
8
The
voice of the LORD shakes the desert;
the
LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
9
The
voice of the LORD twists the oaks C
and
strips the forests bare.
And
in his temple all cry, "Glory!"
10
The
LORD sits D enthroned over the flood;
the
LORD is enthroned as King forever.
11
The
LORD gives strength to his people;
the
LORD blesses his people with peace. [1]
PSALMS: 59
For
the director of music. To the tune of "Do Not Destroy." Of David. A miktam.
A When Saul had sent men to watch David's house in order to kill
him.
1
Deliver
me from my enemies, O God;
protect
me from those who rise up against me.
2
Deliver
me from evildoers
and
save me from bloodthirsty men.
3
See
how they lie in wait for me!
Fierce
men conspire against me
for
no offense or sin of mine, O LORD.
4
I
have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.
Arise
to help me; look on my plight!
5O
LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel,
rouse
yourself to punish all the nations;
show
no mercy to wicked traitors.
Selah
6
They
return at evening,
snarling
like dogs,
and
prowl about the city.
7
See
what they spew from their mouths--
they
spew out swords from their lips,
and
they say, "Who can hear us?"
8
But
you, O LORD, laugh at them;
you
scoff at all those nations.
9
O
my Strength, I watch for you;
you,
O God, are my fortress, 10 my loving God. [2]
God
will go before me
and
will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11
But
do not kill them, O Lord our shield, B
or
my people will forget.
In
your might make them wander about,
and
bring them down.
12
For
the sins of their mouths,
for
the words of their lips,
let
them be caught in their pride.
For
the curses and lies they utter,
13
consume
them in wrath,
consume
them till they are no more.
Then
it will be known to the ends of the earth
that
God rules over Jacob. Selah
14
They
return at evening,
snarling
like dogs,
and
prowl about the city.
15
They
wander about for food
and
howl if not satisfied.
16
But
I will sing of your strength,
in
the morning I will sing of your love;
for
you are my fortress,
my
refuge in times of trouble.
17
O
my Strength, I sing praise to you;
you,
O God, are my fortress, my loving God. [3]
PSALMS: 89
A
maskil A of Ethan the Ezrahite.
1
I
will sing of the LORD's great love forever;
with
my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all
generations.
2
I
will declare that your love stands firm forever,
that
you established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
3
You
said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen
one,
I
have sworn to David my servant,
4 `I
will establish your line forever
and
make your throne firm through all generations.'"
Selah
5
The
heavens praise your wonders, O LORD,
your
faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.
6
For
who in the skies above can compare with the LORD?
Who
is like the LORD among the heavenly beings?
7
In
the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;
he
is more awesome than all who surround him.
8
O
LORD God Almighty, who is like you?
You
are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you.
9
You
rule over the surging sea;
when
its waves mount up, you still them.
10
You
crushed Rahab like one of the slain;
with
your strong arm you scattered your enemies.
11
The
heavens are yours, and yours also the earth;
you
founded the world and all that is in it.
12
You
created the north and the south;
Tabor
and Hermon sing for joy at your name.
13
Your
arm is endued with power;
your
hand is strong, your right hand exalted. [4]
14
Righteousness
and justice are the foundation of your throne;
love
and faithfulness go before you.
15
Blessed
are those who have learned to acclaim you,
who
walk in the light of your presence, O LORD.
16
They
rejoice in your name all day long;
they
exult in your righteousness.
17
For
you are their glory and strength,
and
by your favor you exalt our horn. B
18
Indeed,
our shield C belongs to the LORD,
our
king to the Holy One of Israel.
19
Once
you spoke in a vision,
to
your faithful people you said:
"I have bestowed strength on a
warrior;
I
have exalted a young man from among the people.
20 I
have found David my servant;
with
my sacred oil I have anointed him.
21 My
hand will sustain him;
surely
my arm will strengthen him.
22 No
enemy will subject him to tribute;
no
wicked man will oppress him.
23 I
will crush his foes before him
and
strike down his adversaries.
24 My
faithful love will be with him,
and
through my name his horn D
will be exalted.
25 I
will set his hand over the sea,
his
right hand over the rivers.
26 He
will call out to me, `You are my Father,
my
God, the Rock my Savior.'
27 I
will also appoint him my firstborn,
the
most exalted of the kings of the earth.
28 I
will maintain my love to him forever,
and
my covenant with him will never fail.
his
throne as long as the heavens endure.
30"If his sons forsake my law
and
do not follow my statutes,
31
if
they violate my decrees
and
fail to keep my commands,
32 I
will punish their sin with the rod,
their
iniquity with flogging;
33 but
I will not take my love from him,
nor
will I ever betray my faithfulness.
34 I
will not violate my covenant
or
alter what my lips have uttered.
35 Once
for all, I have sworn by my holiness--
and
I will not lie to David--
36 that
his line will continue forever
and
his throne endure before me like the sun;
37 it
will be established forever like the moon,
the
faithful witness in the sky."
Selah
38
But
you have rejected, you have spurned,
you
have been very angry with your anointed one.
39
You
have renounced the covenant with your servant
and
have defiled his crown in the dust.
40
You
have broken through all his walls
and
reduced his strongholds to ruins.
41
All
who pass by have plundered him;
he
has become the scorn of his neighbors.
42
You
have exalted the right hand of his foes;
you
have made all his enemies rejoice.
43
You
have turned back the edge of his sword
and
have not supported him in battle. [6]
44
You
have put an end to his splendor
and
cast his throne to the ground.
45
You
have cut short the days of his youth;
you
have covered him with a mantle of shame.
Selah
46
How
long, O LORD? Will you hide yourself forever?
How
long will your wrath burn like fire?
47
Remember
how fleeting is my life.
For
what futility you have created all men!
48
What
man can live and not see death,
or
save himself from the power of the grave E?
Selah
49
O
Lord, where is your former great love,
which
in your faithfulness you swore to David?
50
Remember,
Lord, how your servant hasF been mocked,
how
I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
51
the
taunts with which your enemies have mocked, O LORD,
with
which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.
52
Praise
be to the LORD forever!
Amen
and Amen. [7]

Blessed
A are they whose ways are blameless,

Blessed

They
do nothing wrong;
they
walk in his ways.

You
have laid down precepts
that
are to be fully obeyed.
5
Oh,
that my ways were steadfast
in
obeying your decrees!

Then
I would not be put to shame
when
I consider all your commands.

I

as
I learn your righteous laws.

I find comfort in them.

decrees are the theme of my song
wherever

make music to him with tambourine and harp.
4
For
the LORD takes delight in his people;
he
crowns the humble with salvation.
5
Let
the saints rejoice in this honor
and
sing for joy on their beds.
6
May
the praise of God be in their mouths
and
a double-edged sword in their hands,
7
to
inflict vengeance on the nations
and
punishment on the peoples,
8
to
bind their kings with fetters,
their
nobles with shackles of iron,
9
to
carry out the sentence written against them.
This
is the glory of all his saints.
Praise
the LORD. [21]
PROVERBS: 29
29
1
A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes
will
suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.
2
When
the righteous thrive, the people rejoice;
when
the wicked rule, the people groan.
3
A
man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father,
but
a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
4
By
justice a king gives a country stability,
but
one who is greedy for bribes tears it down.
5
Whoever
flatters his neighbor
is
spreading a net for his feet.
6
An
evil man is snared by his own sin,
but
a righteous one can sing and be glad.
7
The
righteous care about justice for the poor,
but
the wicked have no such concern.
8
Mockers
stir up a city,
but
wise men turn away anger.
9
If
a wise man goes to court with a fool,
the
fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace.
10
Bloodthirsty
men hate a man of integrity
and
seek to kill the upright. [22]
11
A
fool gives full vent to his anger,
but
a wise man keeps himself under control.
12
If
a ruler listens to lies,
all
his officials become wicked.
13
The
poor man and the oppressor have this in common:
The
LORD gives sight to the eyes of both.
14
If
a king judges the poor with fairness,
his
throne will always be secure.
15
The
rod of correction imparts wisdom,
but
a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
16
When
the wicked thrive, so does sin,
but
the righteous will see their downfall.
17
Discipline
your son, and he will give you peace;
he
will bring delight to your soul.
18
Where
there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint;
but
blessed is he who keeps the law.
19
A
servant cannot be corrected by mere words;
though
he understands, he will not respond.
20
Do
you see a man who speaks in haste?
There
is more hope for a fool than for him.
21
If
a man pampers his servant from youth,
he
will bring grief A in the end. [23]
22
An
angry man stirs up dissension,
and
a hot-tempered one commits many sins.
23
A
man's pride brings him low,
but
a man of lowly spirit gains honor.
24
The
accomplice of a thief is his own enemy;
he
is put under oath and dare not testify.
25
Fear
of man will prove to be a snare,
but
whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
26
Many
seek an audience with a ruler,
but
it is from the LORD that man gets justice.
27
The
righteous detest the dishonest;
the
wicked detest the upright. [24]
OLD
TESTAMENT: GENESIS 37:1 - 38:30
37
1
Jacob
lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.
2
This
is the account of Jacob.
Joseph,
a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of
Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he brought their father a
bad report about them.
3
Now
Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to
him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented A robe for him.
4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of
them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.
5
Joseph
had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.
6 He said to them, "Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were
binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood
upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it."
8
His
brothers said to him, "Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule
us?" And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.
9
Then
he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. "Listen," he said, "I had
another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down
to me."
10
When
he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said,
"What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually
come and bow down to the ground before you?" 11 His brothers were
jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
12
Now
his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shechem, 13
and Israel said to Joseph, "As you know, your brothers are grazing the
flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them."
"Very
well," he replied.
14
So
he said to him, "Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the
flocks, and bring word back to me." Then he sent him off from the Valley of
Hebron.
When
Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the
fields and asked him, "What are you looking for?"
16
He
replied, "I'm looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing
their flocks?" [25]
17
"They
have moved on from here," the man answered. "I heard them say, `Let's go to
Dothan.' "
So
Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But
they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill
him.
19
"Here
comes that dreamer!" they said to each other. 20 "Come now, let's
kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious
animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams."
21
When
Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. "Let's not take his
life," he said. 22 "Don't shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern
here in the desert, but don't lay a hand on him." Reuben said this to rescue him
from them and take him back to his father.
23
So
when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe--the richly
ornamented robe he was wearing—24 and they took him and threw him
into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it.
25
As
they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites
coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and
they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.
26
Judah
said to his brothers, "What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his
blood? 27 Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our
hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood." His
brothers agreed.
28
So
when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the
cistern and sold him for twenty shekelsB of silver to the
Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.
29
When
Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his
clothes. 30 He went back to his brothers and said, "The boy isn't
there! Where can I turn now?"
31
Then
they got Joseph's robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.
32
They
took the ornamented robe back to their father and said, "We found this. Examine
it to see whether it is your son's robe."
33
He
recognized it and said, "It is my son's robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured
him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces."
34
Then
Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days.
35
All
his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted.
"No," he said, "in mourning will I go down to the grave C to my son."
So his father wept for him.
36
Meanwhile,
the Midianites D sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's
officials, the captain of the guard. [26]
38
1
At
that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam
named Hirah. 2 There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named
Shua. He married her and lay with her; 3 she became pregnant and gave
birth to a son, who was named Er. 4 She conceived again and gave
birth to a son and named him Onan. 5 She gave birth to still another
son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.
6
Judah
got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. 7 But Er,
Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the LORD's sight; so the LORD put him to death.
8
Then
Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her
as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother." 9 But
Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his
brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing
offspring for his brother. 10 What he did was wicked in the LORD's
sight; so he put him to death also.
11
Judah
then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Live as a widow in your father's house
until my son Shelah grows up." For he thought, "He may die too, just like his
brothers." So Tamar went to live in her father's house.
12
After
a long time Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered
from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep,
and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.
13
When
Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,"
14 she took off her widow's clothes, covered herself with a veil to
disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the
road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not
been given to him as his wife.
15
When
Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.
16 Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to
her by the roadside and said, "Come now, let me sleep with you."
"And
what will you give me to sleep with you?" she asked.
17
"I'll
send you a young goat from my flock," he said.
"Will
you give me something as a pledge until you send it?" she asked.
18
He
said, "What pledge should I give you?"
"Your
seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand," she answered. So he gave them to
her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him. 19 After she
left, she took off her veil and put on her widow's clothes again.
20
Meanwhile
Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his
pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her. 21 He asked the
men who lived there, "Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at
Enaim?" [27]
"There
hasn't been any shrine prostitute here," they said.
22
So
he went back to Judah and said, "I didn't find her. Besides, the men who lived
there said, `There hasn't been any shrine prostitute here.'"
23
Then
Judah said, "Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After
all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn't find her."
24
About
three months later Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of
prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant."
Judah
said, "Bring her out and have her burned to death!"
25
As
she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. "I am
pregnant by the man who owns these," she said. And she added, "See if you
recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are."
26
Judah
recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn't give
her to my son Shelah." And he did not sleep with her again.
27
When
the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. 28
As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took
a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, "This one came out first."
29 But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she
said, "So this is how you have broken out!" And he was named Perez. A
30 Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came
out and he was given the name Zerah. B [28]
NEW
TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 12:22 -
45
22 Then they brought him a
demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he
could both talk and see. 23 All the people were astonished and said,
"Could this be the Son of David?"
24 But when the Pharisees
heard this, they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, D the prince of
demons, that this fellow drives out demons."
25 Jesus knew their
thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided
against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against
itself will not stand. 26
If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided
against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out
demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will
be your judges. 28 But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the
kingdom of God has come upon you.
29 "Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man's house and
carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can
rob his house.
30 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not
gather with me scatters. 31
And so I tell you, every sin and
blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be
forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be
forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven,
either in this age or in the age to come.
33 "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree
bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.
34 You
brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the
overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. 35The good man brings good
things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out
of the evil stored up in him. 36
But I tell you that men will have to give
account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.
37 For by
your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be
condemned."
38 Then some of the
Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a
miraculous sign from you."
39 He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous
sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
40 For as
Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of
Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
41 The men
of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it;
for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one
E greater than Jonah is here.
42 The
Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn
it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and
now one greater than Solomon is here.
43 "When an evil F
spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not
find it. 44 Then it says, `I will return to the house I left.' When it
arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order.
45 Then it
goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go
in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first.
That is how it will be with this wicked generation." [29]

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
