DECEMBER 22

PSALMS: 22, 52, 82, 112, 142

PROVERBS: 22

OLD TESTAMENT: NUMBERS 19:1 - 20:29

NEW TESTAMENT: LUKE 1:1 - 25

PSALMS: 22

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Why are you so far from helping me,

and from the words of my groaning?

2 My God, I cry in the daytime, but you don't answer;

In the night season, and am not silent.

3 But you are holy,

You who inhabit the praises of Yisra'el.

4 Our fathers trusted in you.

They trusted, and you delivered them.

5 They cried to you, and were delivered.

They trusted in you, and were not put to shame.

6 But I am a worm, and no man;

A reproach of men, and despised by the people.

7 All those who see me mock me.

They insult me with their lips.

They shake their heads, saying,

8 "He trusts in the LORD; Let him deliver him;

Let him rescue him, since he delights in him."

9 But you brought me out of the womb.

You made me trust at my mother's breasts.

10 I was thrown on you from my mother's womb.

You are my God since my mother bore me.

11 Don't be far from me, for trouble is near.

For there is none to help.

12 Many bulls have surrounded me.

Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me.

13 They open their mouths wide against me,

Lions tearing prey and roaring.

14 I am poured out like water.

All my bones are out of joint.

My heart is like wax;

It is melted within me.

15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd.

My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.

You have brought me into the dust of death.

16 For dogs have surrounded me.

A company of evil-doers have enclosed me.

They pierced my hands and my feet.

17 I can count all of my bones.

They look and stare at me.

18 They divide my garments among them.

They cast lots for my clothing.

19 But don't be far off, LORD.

You are my help: hurry to help me.

20 Deliver my soul from the sword,

My precious life from the power of the dog.

21 Save me from the lion's mouth;

Yes, from the horns of the wild oxen you have answered me.

22 I will declare your name to my brothers.

In the midst of the assembly, will I praise you.

23 You who fear the LORD, praise him!

All you descendants of Ya`akov, glorify him!

Stand in awe of him, all you descendants of Yisra'el!

24 For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted,

Neither has he hid his face from him;

But when he cried to him, he heard.

25 Of you comes my praise in the great assembly.

I will pay my vows before those who fear him.

26 The humble shall eat and be satisfied.

They shall praise the LORD who seek after him.

Let your hearts live forever.

27 All the ends of the eretz shall remember and turn to the LORD.

All the relatives of the nations shall worship before you.

28 For the kingdom is the LORD's.

He is the ruler over the nations.

29 All the rich ones of the eretz shall eat and worship.

All those who go down to the dust shall bow before him,

Even he who can't keep his soul alive.

30 Posterity shall serve him.

Future generations shall be told about the Lord.

31 They shall come and shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, For he has done it.

PSALMS: 52

1 Why do you boast of mischief, mighty man?

God's loving kindness endures continually.

2 Your tongue plots destruction,

Like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

3 You love evil more than good,

Lying rather than speaking the truth.

Selah.

4 You love all devouring words,

You deceitful tongue.

5 God will likewise destroy you forever.

He will take you up, and pluck you out of your tent,

And root you out of the land of the living.

Selah.

6 The righteous also will see it, and fear,

And laugh at him, saying,

7 "Behold, this is the man who didn't make God his strength,

But trusted in the abundance of his riches,

And strengthened himself in his wickedness."

8 But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in God's house.

I trust in God's loving kindness forever and ever.

9 I will give you thanks forever, because you have done it.

I will hope in your name, for it is good,

In the presence of your holy ones.

PSALMS: 82

1 God presides in the great assembly.

He judges among the gods.

2 "How long will you judge unjustly,

And show partiality to the wicked?"

Selah.

3 "Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless.

Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.

4 Rescue the weak and needy.

Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked."

5 They don't know, neither do they understand.

They walk back and forth in darkness.

All the foundations of the eretz are shaken.

6 I said, "You are gods,

All of you are sons of Ha`Elyon.

7 Nevertheless you shall die like men,

And fall like one of the rulers."

8 Arise, God, judge the eretz,

For you inherit all of the nations.

PSALMS: 112

1 Praise the LORD!

Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,

Who delights greatly in his mitzvot.

2 His seed will be mighty on eretz.

The generation of the upright will be blessed.

3 Wealth and riches are in his house.

His righteousness endures forever.

4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright,

Gracious, merciful, and righteous.

5 It is well with the man who deals graciously and lends.

He will maintain his cause in judgment.

6 For he will never be shaken.

The righteous will be remembered forever.

7 He will not be afraid of evil news.

His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

8 His heart is established.

He will not be afraid in the end when he sees his adversaries.

9 He has dispersed, he has given to the poor.

His righteousness endures forever.

His horn will be exalted with honor.

10 The wicked will see it, and be grieved.

He shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away.

The desire of the wicked will perish.

PSALMS: 142

1 I cry with my voice to the LORD.

With my voice, I ask the LORD for mercy.

2 I pour out my complaint before him.

I tell him my troubles.

3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me,

You knew my path.

In the way in which I walk,

They have hidden a snare for me.

4 Look on my right, and see;

For there is no one who is concerned for me.

Refuge has fled from me.

No one cares for my soul.

5 I cried to you, the LORD.

I said, "You are my refuge,

My portion in the land of the living."

6 Listen to my cry,

For I am in desperate need.

Deliver me from my persecutors,

For they are stronger than me.

7 Bring my soul out of prison,

That I may give thanks to your name.

The righteous will surround me,

For you will be good to me.

PROVERBS: 22

1 A good name is more desirable than great riches;

Loving favor rather than silver and gold.

2 The rich and the poor have this in common:

The LORD is the maker of them all.

3 A prudent man sees danger, and hides himself;

But the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

4 The result of humility and the fear of the LORD

Is wealth, honor, and life.

5 Thorns and snares are in the path of the wicked:

Whoever guards his soul stays from them.

6 Train up a child in the way he should go,

And when he is old he will not depart from it.

7 The rich rules over the poor.

The borrower is servant to the lender.

8 He who sows wickedness reaps trouble,

And the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

9 He who has a generous eye will be blessed;

For he shares his food with the poor.

10 Drive out the mocker, and strife will go out;

Yes, quarrels and insults will stop.

11 He who loves purity of heart and speaks gracefully Is the king's friend.

12 The eyes of the LORD watch over knowledge;

But he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.

13 The sluggard says,

"There is a lion outside!

I will be killed in the streets!"

14 The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit:

He who is under the LORD's wrath will fall into it.

15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child:

The rod of discipline drives it far from him.

16 Whoever oppresses the poor for his own increase and whoever gives to the rich,

Both come to poverty.

17 Turn your ear, and listen to the words of the wise.

Apply your heart to my teaching.

18 For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you,

If all of them are ready on your lips.

19 That your trust may be in the LORD,

I teach you today, even you.

20 Haven't I written to you thirty excellent things

Of counsel and knowledge,

21 To teach you truth, reliable words,

To give sound answers to the ones who sent you?

22 Don't exploit the poor, because he is poor;

And don't crush the needy in court;

23 For the LORD will plead their case,

And plunder the life of those who plunder them.

24 Don't befriend a hot-tempered man,

And don't associate with one who harbors anger:

25 Lest you learn his ways,

And ensnare your soul.

26 Don't you be one of those who strike hands,

Of those who are collateral for debts.

27 If you don't have means to pay,

Why should he take away your bed from under you?

28 Don't move the ancient boundary stone,

Which your fathers have set up.

29 Do you see a man skilled in his work?

He will serve kings;

He won't serve obscure men.

OLD TESTAMENT: NUMBERS 19:1 - 20:29

19:1 The LORD spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying, 2 This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded, saying, Speak to the children of Yisra'el, that they bring you a red heifer without spot, in which is no blemish, [and] on which never came yoke. 3 You shall give her to El`azar the Kohen, and he shall bring her forth outside of the camp, and one shall kill her before his face: 4 and El`azar the Kohen shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle her blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times. 5 One shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn: 6 and the Kohen shall take cedar-wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer. 7 Then the Kohen shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp, and the Kohen shall be unclean until the even. 8 He who burns her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even. 9 A man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up outside of the camp in a clean place; and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Yisra'el for a water for impurity: it is a sin-offering. 10 He who gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: and it shall be to the children of Yisra'el, and to the stranger who sojourns among them, for a statute forever. 11 He who touches the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days:12 the same shall purify himself therewith on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he doesn't purify himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean. 13 Whoever touches a dead person, the body of a man who has died, and doesn't purifies himself, defiles the tent of the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from Yisra'el: because the water for impurity was not sprinkled on him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet on him. 14 This is the law when a man dies in a tent: everyone who comes into the tent, and everyone who is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days. 15 Every open vessel, which has no covering bound on it, is unclean. 16 Whoever in the open field touches one who is slain with a sword, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days. 17 For the unclean they shall take of the ashes of the burning of the sin-offering; and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel: 18 and a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it on the tent, and on all the vessels, and on the persons who were there, and on him who touched the bone, or the slain, or the dead, or the grave: 19 and the clean person shall sprinkle on the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify him; and he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even. 20 But the man who shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from the midst of the assembly, because he has defiled the sanctuary of the LORD: the water for impurity has not been sprinkled on him; he is unclean. 21 It shall be a perpetual statute to them: and he who sprinkles the water for impurity shall wash his clothes, and he who touches the water for impurity shall be unclean until even. 22 Whatever the unclean person touches shall be unclean; and the soul that touches it shall be unclean until even.

20:1 The children of Yisra'el, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Tzin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miryam died there, and was buried there. 2 There was no water for the congregation: and they assembled themselves together against Moshe and against Aharon. 3 The people strove with Moshe, and spoke, saying, Would that we had died when our brothers died before the LORD! 4 Why have you brought the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our animals? 5 Why have you made us to come up out of Mitzrayim, to bring us in to this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink. 6 Moshe and Aharon went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tent of meeting, and fell on their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared to them. 7  The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, 8 Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you, and Aharon your brother, and speak you to the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and you shall bring forth to them water out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their cattle drink. 9 Moshe took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him. 10 Moshe and Aharon gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, Hear now, you rebels; shall we bring you forth water out of this rock? 11 Moshe lifted up his hand, and struck the rock with his rod twice: and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle. 12 The LORD said to Moshe and Aharon, Because you didn't believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Yisra'el, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them. 13 These are the waters of Merivah; because the children of Yisra'el strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them. 14 Moshe sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, Thus says your brother Yisra'el, You know all the travail that has befallen us: 15 how our fathers went down into Mitzrayim, and we lived in Mitzrayim a long time; and the Mitzrim dealt ill with us, and our fathers: 16 and when we cried to the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Mitzrayim: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of your border. 17  Please let us pass through your land: we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go along the king's highway; we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your border. 18 Edom said to him, You shall not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against you. 19 The children of Yisra'el said to him, We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of your water, I and my cattle, then will I give the price of it: let me only, without [doing] anything [else], pass through on my feet. 20 He said, You shall not pass through. Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Yisra'el passage through his border: why Yisra'el turned away from him. 22 They journeyed from Kadesh: and the children of Yisra'el, even the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor. 23 The LORD spoke to Moshe and Aharon in Mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying, 24 Aharon shall be gathered to his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given to the children of Yisra'el, because you rebelled against my word at the waters of Merivah. 25 Take Aharon and El`azar his son, and bring them up to Mount Hor; 26 and strip Aharon of his garments, and put them on El`azar his son: and Aharon shall be gathered [to his people], and shall die there.

27  Moshe did as the LORD commanded: and they went up into Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation. 28 Moshe stripped Aharon of his garments, and put them on El`azar his son; and Aharon died there on the top of the mountain: and Moshe and El`azar came down from the mountain. 29 When all the congregation saw that Aharon was dead, they wept for Aharon thirty days, even all the house of Yisra'el.

NEW TESTAMENT: LUKE 1:1 - 25

1:1 Because many have undertaken to draw up a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us,

2 even as they delivered them to us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word,

3 it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus;

4 that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.

5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Yehudah, a certain Kohen named Zekharyah, of the priestly division of Aviyah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aharon, and her name was Elisheva.

6 They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the mitzvot and ordinances of the Lord.

7  But they had no child, because Elisheva was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.

8 Now it happened, while he executed the Kohen's office before God in the order of his division,

9 according to the custom of the Kohen's office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

10 The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.

11 An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12 Zekharyah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell on him.

13 But the angel said to him, "Don't be afraid, Zekharyah, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elisheva, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Yochanan.

14 You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth.

15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Ruach HaKodesh, even from his mother's womb.

16 He will turn many of the children of Yisra'el to the Lord, their God.

17 He will go before his face in the spirit and power of Eliyah, 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."

18 Zekharyah said to the angel, "How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years."

19 The angel answered him, "I am Gavri'el, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.

20 Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you didn't believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time."

21 The people were waiting for Zekharyah, and they marveled while he delayed in the temple.

22 When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute.

23 It happened, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house.

24 After these days Elisheva, his wife, conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying,

25 "Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach among men."

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
