"I
am the most ignorant of men;
I
do not have a man's understanding.
3
I
have not learned wisdom,
nor
have I knowledge of the Holy One.
4
Who
has gone up to heaven and come down?
Who
has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands?
Who
has wrapped up the waters in his cloak?
Who
has established all the ends of the earth?
What
is his name, and the name of his son?
Tell
me if you know!
5
"Every word of God is
flawless;
he
is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
6 Do
not add to his words,
or
he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

"Two
things I ask of you, O LORD;
do
not refuse me before I die:
8
Keep
falsehood and lies far from me;
give
me neither poverty nor riches,

Now
Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of
Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites
who had taken him there.
2
The
LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian
master. 3
When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him
success in everything he did, 4 Joseph
found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of
his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5 From the
time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD
blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the
LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6 So he left
in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern
himself with anything except the food he ate.
Now
Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7 and after
a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!"
8
But
he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern
himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my
care. 9
No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing
from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked
thing and sin against God?" 10 And
though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or
even be with her.
11
One
day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household
servants was inside. 12 She
caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak
in her hand and ran out of the house.
13
When
she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house,
14
she
called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "this Hebrew has been
brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I
screamed.
15
When
he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the
house."
16
She
kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she
told him this story: "That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport
of me. 18
But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran
out of the house."
19
When
his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, "This is how your slave
treated me," he burned with anger. 20 Joseph's
master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were
confined.
But
while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the LORD
was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the
prison warden. 22 So the
warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made
responsible for all that was done there. 23 The
warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was
with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did. [11]

Some
time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their
master, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh
was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and put
them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison
where Joseph was confined. 4 The
captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them.
After
they had been in custody for some time, 5 each of
the two men--the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being
held in prison--had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its
own.
6
When
Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. 7 So he
asked Pharaoh's officials who were in custody with him in his master's house,
"Why are your faces so sad today?"
8
"We
both had dreams," they answered, "but there is no one to interpret them."
Then
Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your
dreams."
9
So
the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, "In my dream I saw a
vine in front of me, 10 and on
the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its
clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh's
cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup and
put the cup in his hand."
12
"This
is what it means," Joseph said to him. "The three branches are three days.
13
Within
three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and
you will put Pharaoh's cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his
cupbearer. 14
But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness;
mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. 15 For I was
forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done
nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon."
16
When
the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to
Joseph, "I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread. A 17 In the
top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating
them out of the basket on my head."
18
"This
is what it means," Joseph said. "The three baskets are three days. 19 Within
three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and hang you on a tree. B And the birds will eat away your flesh."
20
Now
the third day was Pharaoh's birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials.
He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the
presence of his officials: 21 He
restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup
into Pharaoh's hand, 22 but he
hanged C the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to
them in his interpretation.
23
The
chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him. [12]

1
When
two full years had passed, Pharaoh had a dream: He was standing by the Nile,
2 when
out of the river there came up seven cows, sleek and fat, and they grazed among
the reeds. 3
After them, seven other cows, ugly and gaunt, came up out of the Nile and
stood beside those on the riverbank. 4 And the
cows that were ugly and gaunt ate up the seven sleek, fat cows. Then Pharaoh
woke up.
5
He
fell asleep again and had a second dream: Seven heads of grain, healthy and
good, were growing on a single stalk. 6 After
them, seven other heads of grain sprouted--thin and scorched by the east wind.
7 The
thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy, full heads. Then Pharaoh
woke up; it had been a dream.
8
In
the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent for all the magicians and wise men
of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.
9
Then
the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, "Today I am reminded of my shortcomings.
10
Pharaoh was once angry with his servants, and he imprisoned me and the
chief baker in the house of the captain of the guard. 11 Each of
us had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own. 12 Now a
young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told
him our dreams, and he interpreted them for us, giving each man the
interpretation of his dream. 13 And
things turned out exactly as he interpreted them to us: I was restored to my
position, and the other man was hanged. A"
14
So
Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon. When he
had shaved and changed his clothes, he came before Pharaoh.
15
Pharaoh
said to Joseph, "I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it
said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it."
16
"I
cannot do it," Joseph replied to Pharaoh, "but God will give Pharaoh the answer
he desires." [13]

to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my
brothers. 50 For whoever does
the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and
mother."

same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large
crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the
people stood on the shore. 3 Then he
told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer
went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was
scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it
up. 5 Some fell on rocky
places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil
was shallow. 6 But when the sun
came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no
root. 7 Other seed fell
among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed
fell on good soil, where it produced a crop--a hundred, sixty or thirty times
what was sown. 9 He who has ears, let
him hear."

The
disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?"
11
He
replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom
of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be
given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he
has will be taken from him. 13 This is why I speak
to them in parables:
"Though
seeing, they do not see;
though
hearing, they do not hear or understand.
14 In them is
fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:
"`You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you
will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
they
hardly hear with their ears,
and
they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise
they might see with their eyes,
hear
with their ears,
understand
with their hearts
and
turn, and I would heal them.' A
16 But
blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they
hear.
17 For I tell you the
truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not
see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

"Listen then to what the parable of the sower means:
19 When anyone hears
the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and
snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the
path. 20 The one who
received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at
once receives it with joy. 21 But since he has no
root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of
the word, he quickly falls away. 22 The one who
received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but
the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it
unfruitful. 23 But the one who
received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and
understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times
what was sown." [15]
